Chapter 134: The Reckoning

The forest was unnaturally still, the quiet stretching taut like a bowstring. Dakota and his group moved cautiously through the clearing, each of them hyper-aware of their surroundings. Even the usual hum of insects and rustle of leaves had faded, as if the forest itself was holding its breath.

Dakota: "Stay sharp. They're close."

His words had barely left his mouth when shadows shifted and moved. Seven cloaked figures emerged from the darkness, their presence oppressive and suffocating. They fanned out, each one radiating menace. At their center was the leader, a towering figure with a calm, commanding aura. His dark mask revealed only a pair of piercing eyes that seemed to dissect their every move.

Michael took a step forward, his fists clenched.

Michael: "Say what you want. You're not leaving here unscathed."

The leader chuckled, a low, mocking sound.

Dark Mage Leader: "Bold words for someone so outmatched. But very well. Let's see how long that confidence lasts."

Before anyone could respond, the Dark Mages moved. Their attacks were swift and synchronized, forcing Dakota's group to scatter.

Dakota: "Everyone, pick a target and don't let them overwhelm you!"

Each pair instinctively found themselves facing an opponent, the clearing erupting into chaos. The leader strode toward Dakota and Michael, his movements deliberate and unhurried.

Dakota's heart pounded as he squared off with the Dark Mage leader. The man radiated danger, every movement precise and calculated.

The leader struck first, a lightning-fast punch aimed at Michael's head. Michael dodged just in time, countering with a jab toward the leader's ribs. The leader caught his fist with ease, twisting his arm and throwing him off balance. Dakota stepped in, aiming a high kick at the leader's face. The leader blocked it effortlessly, shoving Dakota back.

The two attacked in tandem, their strikes perfectly coordinated. Michael's raw power and Dakota's speed created a relentless assault, but the leader met every blow with almost casual efficiency.

Michael: "You're holding back, aren't you?"

The leader smirked beneath his mask, his next attack aimed at Dakota. Dakota barely managed to dodge, his breath catching.

Dakota (thinking): I can't believe I'm fighting alongside my past self against this guy.

The thought was fleeting, pushed aside by the need to focus. The leader's attacks grew faster, each strike designed to exploit the slightest weakness.

Mila and Mia stood back to back as their opponent circled them like a predator. His movements were fluid, almost serpentine, and his strikes came without warning.

He lunged at Mila first, a low sweep aimed at her legs. She jumped back, countering with a spinning kick that the Dark Mage narrowly avoided. Mia seized the opportunity, delivering a quick jab to his ribs.

Mila: "We've got him now!"

The Dark Mage snarled, his strikes becoming more aggressive. He aimed a high kick at Mia, forcing her to duck, but Mila was already in motion. She landed a solid blow to his side, causing him to stagger briefly.

Mia: "Don't get cocky, Mila. He's still dangerous."

The girls worked in perfect harmony, their movements fluid and synchronized. The Dark Mage struggled to keep up, but his relentless attacks kept them on their toes.

Ava and Emily faced their opponent with grim determination. The Dark Mage was lean and quick, his strikes sharp and deliberate.

Emily blocked a punch aimed at her head and retaliated with a kick to his knee, but the Dark Mage twisted away, his counterstrike grazing her side. Ava attacked from the other side, her fist connecting with his shoulder.

Ava: "He's fast, but we're faster."

Emily: "Don't let him read your moves."

The two moved as a unit, their attacks relentless. The Dark Mage defended skillfully, his counters precise, but the combined pressure from Ava and Emily began to push him back.

Liam and Alex found themselves facing a towering brute of a Dark Mage. His strikes were heavy, each one aimed to incapacitate.

Liam ducked under a wild swing, landing a punch to the Dark Mage's jaw. The blow seemed to have little effect, the Dark Mage retaliating with a backhanded strike that Liam barely avoided.

Alex moved in, kicking at the Dark Mage's knee. The attack forced the brute to shift his stance, giving Liam an opening to land a quick jab to his ribs.

Liam: "This guy's built like a tank."

Alex: "Good thing tanks have weak points."

Their teamwork kept the Dark Mage on his toes, but his sheer strength made every exchange dangerous.

Lucas and Ethan faced a wiry, agile opponent. The Dark Mage moved like a dancer, his strikes fluid and unpredictable.

Lucas feinted left, drawing the Dark Mage's attention, while Ethan attacked from the right. The Dark Mage dodged both strikes, countering with a spinning kick that forced them to retreat.

Lucas: "He's slippery."

Ethan: "Then let's corner him."

The two began coordinating their attacks more carefully, herding the Dark Mage toward a tree. Lucas lunged with a powerful punch, forcing the Dark Mage to duck, and Ethan followed up with a kick that grazed his shoulder.

Henry's opponent was quick and ruthless, his strikes aimed to overwhelm. Henry blocked a flurry of punches, countering with a powerful uppercut that sent the Dark Mage stumbling.

Henry: "Not so tough now, are you?"

The Dark Mage growled, his next attack a spinning kick aimed at Henry's ribs. Henry sidestepped, landing a solid punch to the Dark Mage's side.

Henry: "You're going to regret picking this fight."

The two exchanged blows, neither gaining a clear advantage.

Jack, Luna, and Amelia faced a Dark Mage with an almost regal bearing. His movements were elegant and deliberate, each strike aimed to disable.

Jack blocked a punch aimed at Luna, countering with a jab to the Dark Mage's shoulder. Luna followed up with a sweeping kick that the Dark Mage narrowly avoided. Amelia moved in, her fist connecting with his ribs.

Jack: "This guy's no pushover."

Luna: "Then we'll just have to work harder."

The three worked together seamlessly, their combined attacks forcing the Dark Mage onto the defensive.

The clearing had become a battlefield, each fight a blur of motion and sound. The Dark Mages were skilled, their attacks calculated and ruthless. But Dakota's group fought with determination, their teamwork keeping them in the fight.

Despite the chaos, none of the fights had reached a conclusion. Each side refused to give an inch, the tension building as the battle raged on.
