Chapter 221: End
Everyone glanced over at Harianto with great anticipation, hoping that it would be great news.
Thankfully, it was indeed so.
"This device can open a channel to the other side.
"It is designed to try and collapse the portal, but with a switch and the energy reversed, it will open the portal even bigger,
"allowing for more higher tiered demonic beasts over."
Harianto turned some knobs on the device, setting it to try and collapse the portal.
"What are the odds of success?" Lukas asked.
He knew that it was a last-ditch attempt by the Dark Lord, and it might not work as intended.
Harianto frowned and checked some of the displays on the information panel. After that, he glanced over at the portal, taking an estimate of the size of the portal.
He made some mental calculations and said, "It has a sixty percent chance of success from what I see.
"The demonic beasts on the other end might try and disrupt the process."
"We can try our best to stop whatever comes out of the portal."
Lukas said, and the others nodded enthusiastically.
They were eager to stop the ravaging of their homes by the demonic beasts once and for all.
"I can help." Derrick's voice came from behind.
He had a test tube in his hand. Inside the test tube, a blue glowing liquid could be seen.
"This is the genotoxin that I've created. Use it on the demonic beasts in the portal," he said and passed the test tube over to Harianto.
Harianto nodded, and he used his ability on the device again.
A compartment was created in the device, and Harianto placed the test tube inside it.
After doing so, he glanced over at everyone, who were looking on with great anticipation.
This was it.
The deciding moment to getting rid of the demonic beasts coming into their home.
Lukas nodded at Harianto, and so did everyone.
Taking a deep breath, Harianto's hand hovered over the button for a few moments before he pressed onto it.
Whirl.
The machine gave out a loud whirling sound, and it started shaking.
A purple glowing beam shot out from it at the portal.
Tremble.
The earth trembled again when the purple glow came into contact with the dark portal.
Roar.
Demonic beasts on the other side of the portal came rushing at the portal, trying desperately to come out and stop the device.
However, when they got near the purple glowing beam, their bodies started to rot and crumble.
All that was left after that was a pile of putrid flesh and bones on the ground.
The hordes of demonic beasts didn't stop, and they came wave after wave.
It didn't work for them.
As more and more genotoxin was released into the surroundings by the purple beam, it took less time for them to disintegrate into flesh and bones.
Huge demonic beasts then came and joined in.
Lukas figured they must have been the Transcendent Tiered demonic beasts.
They lunged at the purple beam and the portal, hammering at it, trying to make it stop.
But it was too late for them.
They slowly rotted and disintegrated into flesh and bones.
The portal also became smaller as time passed.
Finally, the portal disappeared into the air.
Everyone was ecstatic, and they gave out a loud cheer.
The red tint in the sky was also gone.
Lukas glanced up and saw the blue sky and white fluffy clouds passing by.
It took some time for the realization to set in for him.
Finally, it's over.
He came over to Harianto and patted him on his back.
Riley and the others were also celebrating.
Emma and Rex were even hugging together with joy.
A rare sight to behold.
Lukas and Harianto just grinned at what they were witnessing.
Terry and his teammates were in tears.
He felt sorry for Kevin and his men.
They were so close to witnessing this victory.
Lukas, after soaking in the happy atmosphere, glanced over at Derrick.
Curiously, Derrick didn't seem to be too happy.
"Anything wrong?" Lukas walked over to Derrick and asked.
Derrick shook his head and replied, "This could have been avoided.
"And I'm not about to stop here.
"It's time I get everything settled and atone for our mistakes."
He said with determination in his eyes.
"But first..." Derrick spoke into his earbuds and said, "Secretary Sherry, deploy your men and get us out of here."
"They are on their way," Sherry's voice replied immediately.
...
Center Battle Administration Area.
Derrick sat beside Lukas as their armored car made its way towards the Leader's residence.
When they arrived, Derrick couldn't wait and got into the house by himself.
Apparently, he knew the layout of the house very well.
The Leader was awake now that the dangers from the demonic beasts were over.
"Derrick," the Leader called out to Derrick when he saw him enter the living room.
He stood up and scanned Derrick from head to toe.
Derrick was looking as youthful as he was.
The Leader was full of envy for Derrick's ability.
However, Derrick wasn't interested in pleasantries.
"Lawrence, I'm here to make a proposition."
"What proposition?" The Leader was taken aback by how Derrick spoke.
He had never heard Derrick speak in such a manner.
Something must have happened, he thought.
"I can make you be like me, forever youthful," Derrick said.
The Leader was very intrigued by it.
But what Derrick wanted made him think twice.
"Relinquish your authority.
"Let the people decide for themselves who they want as the Leader.
"I would let everyone know what had happened, what we've done to this world."
The Leader frowned, and he glanced over at Sherry and the others who had come with Derrick.
His gaze stopped at Lukas.
And when he saw the flashes of lightning in Lukas's hands, he knew which side Lukas had taken.
The Leader gave out a long sigh and walked over to a cabinet.
He took out a bottle of whisky, opened it, and poured it into two glasses.
"Don't you think of using your mind control on me," Derrick warned.
He had asked the others to take on the Leader if his behavior was suddenly different.
The Leader shook his head and passed the glass of whisky to Derrick.
"I'm glad that you are no longer running away.
"I'm tired of pretending.
"You're right.
"It's time for me to step down.
"Maybe get Sam and Hong out of their slumber, and we can have a meal together, just like old times."
His hand hovered in the air with the glass of whisky.
Derrick took the glass of whisky and drank it.
...
South Battle Administration Area.
Lukas and the others were looking out from the cockpit as the familiar city came into view.
The airplane didn't have the familiar blue glow protecting it.
It was emitting something else into the air.
The genotoxin was mass produced by Derrick, and the demonic beasts that were still alive were being extinguished by it.
As the plane landed and the back opened, Lukas and the others got out of the airplane.
It was eye-opening for them when they saw the airbase lined up with people, welcoming their return.
"Here they come," Rodney's voice boomed out loud, and he approached Lukas and the others.
He took a puff from his cigar, and his secretary gave Lukas a bouquet of flowers.
The secretary proceeded to give Riley, Rex, Emma, Harianto, and Margaret a bouquet of flowers.
"We've been waiting for ages," Rodney said and led them over to the checkpoint.
Reporters and camera crews came up to them with their microphones and cameras.
"Welcome back, can you let us know how the last battle went?" The reporter placed the microphone in front of Riley, and she waited for him to speak.
Rex pulled the microphone to his side and spoke on how they had to endure near death situations to get to their final destination.
Everyone listened attentively and gave out sounds of admiration at Rex's exaggerated speech.
Emma couldn't help herself but rolled her eyes hard at what Rex was saying.
"And so, we succeeded," Rex concluded his speech, and everyone gave a roaring round of applause.
These were their heroes from the South Battle Administration Area.
"All right. Let our heroes rest," Rodney said and led Lukas and the others to an armored truck waiting for them.
They boarded the armored truck, and the engine started.
Along the way, Lukas could see that everything was back to normal now.
No signs of the damages from the demonic beast horde were visible anymore.
The city was bustling with activities.
Vendors peddled their goods, with families shopping around.
And with the genotoxin, the wall was now open as the surroundings had been cleared of demonic beasts.
Factories were built outside the wall, and with the increase in production, everyone's life got better.
...
When they arrived back home, it was a surreal feeling for them.
They were now rich with all the reward money.
A blessing, as now they wouldn't be needed as much with the demonic beasts gone.
Lukas went up to his room and lay on the soft bed immediately.
He went into a deep slumber before waking up again.
The aroma of food and hunger had woken him up.
As he walked down the stairs, he could see everyone waiting for him as usual.
Emma was placing a plate of steak for him.
On her side, Rex was busy texting someone, presumably one of his exes. Now that he was rich, the situation had changed; they were trying to contact him relentlessly.
Riley was scrolling and reading the news.
Harianto and Margaret were drinking and savoring their coffee.
"We will get to choose the new leader and council next month," Riley said as he put down his phone.
The Leader had stuck to his words and stepped down, making way for the people to decide their representatives.
Lukas nodded and said, "Guess we can retire now."
He stood up and proposed a toast.
"For team Riley."
The others did the same, and they shouted, "For team Riley."
