Ch. 174
Lin Nan had originally wanted to take advantage of skipping class in the morning, when there were almost no people moving around campus, to go apartment hunting.
But before setting out, she used her phone to ask Lina, who had already rented a place.
Six hundred yuan a month, one month deposit plus one month rent upfront.
So Lin Nan could only temporarily give up the idea of renting an apartment. She didn't even have a thousand yuan in her account - if she forced herself to rent a place, she'd probably have to survive on nothing but air for the rest of her days.
But staying in the dormitory also made her feel anxious and uneasy. After little Lin Nan's departure, no matter how much she tried to deceive herself, she could no longer confidently claim to be a man.
At noon, the roommates who had gone to class gradually returned to the dormitory.
Although Lin Nan always felt she hadn't changed when looking in the mirror, the way her three roommates looked at her seemed somewhat strange.
Besides little Lin Nan disappearing, there seemed to be other changes about her body, but Lin Nan was completely unaware of them and didn't understand what exactly had changed.
Could it be the "feminine charm" that Chen Yao and Tu Junhui had mentioned before?
This invisible, intangible thing was really hard to figure out what it meant.
Maybe it meant she had become more feminine? Or perhaps prettier somewhere?
Lin Nan couldn't figure it out, but too many things had happened today, so she didn't have the energy to think about all these trivial matters. She just sat wearily in front of the computer, mechanically playing auto-chess in League of Legends.
Absent-minded, she naturally finished eighth or seventh every round, averaging ten minutes per game.
The atmosphere in the dormitory was somewhat stiff. Noon was usually the liveliest time in the dorm–four people playing chess and games together, or studying seriously together. But now, all four dormmates were distracted.
Tu Junhui leaned back in his chair, seemingly looking down at his phone, but his gaze kept glancing toward Lin Nan.
Lin Nan really did look more like a girl now, or rather, had completely become a girl.
He remembered that before yesterday, although Lin Nan's appearance and figure could rival ordinary girls and could even be called pretty, at that time she still carried some boyish aura, which prevented him from completely seeing Lin Nan as a girl.
But now...
His personality was outgoing, but that was only toward same-sex friends. At this moment, Lin Nan sitting there made him feel like there was a pretty girl in the dormitory, making him feel constrained.
He didn't quite like this kind of dormitory atmosphere, so he picked up his phone and headed toward the door: "I'm going to visit next door."
Xiong Da, who was studying, looked up and also took his books and scurried away.
Although Xiong Da usually immersed himself in his own world and didn't like paying attention to others, he also obviously felt uncomfortable with the feeling of having a girl in the dormitory.
Only Chen Yao had already completely treated Lin Nan as a girl.
"I should still move out." Lin Nan closed the screen that Chen Yao had given her, sighing as she turned to look at Chen Yao. "Do you have any money? Lend me some to rent a place."
"I told you the advisor wouldn't allow it."
"He said it's okay." Lin Nan casually made up an excuse. "Maybe it's because I look too much like a girl and it's bad for the male dormitory."
This reason was acceptable to Chen Yao, but after checking his WeChat balance, he helplessly shook his head: "I bought a game for Xiong Da a while ago, and I've been spending too much money lately... I don't have much left."
Lin Nan looked up at him in disbelief: "It's only the beginning of the month."
"I have three hundred left, do you want it? I'll have to live off Huabei for a while..."
She really needed to rely on herself rather than borrowing money.
Lin Nan wasn't someone who liked to borrow money anyway. If it weren't for the fact that her presence was obviously making her roommates uncomfortable, and worrying about what might happen if she was completely female in a male dormitory, she wouldn't have brought up borrowing money.
"How about I ask around to see if there's any way to make quick money?" Chen Yao worriedly started contacting his basketball friends on his phone, though he wasn't optimistic about this kind of thing. "To make quick money nowadays, you either lie down, accompany drinking, or do something illegal. Why don't you just ask your mom for some money?"
Lin Nan firmly shook her head: "No way."
Her mother had already been troubled and worried about her situation. She didn't want to bother her more.
Moreover, even though their relationship as mother and daughter had improved and progressed during her last visit home, Lin Nan still felt somewhat resentful psychologically.
Chen Yao got up and came to Lin Nan's side, leaning sideways against the wardrobe while searching for money-making part-time jobs and trying to cheer her up.
"Your voice sounds much better... It's no different from a normal girl's now. After you have surgery, there's no way anyone could guess you used to be a man."
Lin Nan suspected this guy had taken a course called "How to Kill Conversations."
After a moment of silence, she tried her best to ignore the second half of Chen Yao's statement: "This was actually my voice before, I just deliberately kept it low."
Even her suppressed voice was still female, just slightly more neutral. Now that she had completely become a girl, she was too lazy to lower her voice in front of Chen Yao to deceive herself by pretending to be male.
"Right, you didn't suppress it when you were drunk before, did you?" Chen Yao remembered Lin Nan's voice at the KTV last time. Although it was clear due to alcohol, it had a somewhat silly quality.
After waiting a moment without hearing Lin Nan's response, Chen Yao shifted his gaze from his phone screen to look at Lin Nan, only to see her sitting there in a daze with her hands supporting her cheeks, her legs pressed tightly together with almost no gap. Looking down from a diagonal angle, the curves of Lin Nan's chest were increasingly obvious, and he could even see some snowy whiteness through the loose neckline.
Usually Lin Nan rarely displayed such feminine gestures, and even when she did, it was unconscious. But today's Lin Nan seemed to have... something wrong with her head?
Or had some unknown blow caused Lin Nan to completely give up resistance?
Chen Yao didn't dare look too much, feeling like it would be sinful.
"There's a part-time job that seems okay... working promotional activities at the school supermarket, one hundred fifty for an afternoon plus evening."
Due to students about to go on vacation, supermarkets that had stockpiled goods naturally wanted to quickly sell products that would expire during winter break, and the best way was through discounts and promotions.
"That's a bit low..." If it were normally, Lin Nan would definitely happily apply, but the problem was that this hundred fifty couldn't solve the problem.
Rent plus living expenses–she needed to earn at least five or six hundred in the short term to barely make it to winter break, and that was with eating instant noodles every day.
Originally she had wanted to fleece her uncle, but she had already gotten quite a bit of money from him recently. Having some sense of shame, she felt it wasn't quite appropriate to ask for more money. Besides, you had to wait for the wool to grow before you could shear it.
She lay on the desk feeling lost, caught between poverty on one side and the awkwardness of living in the dormitory on the other.
Indeed, the most serious disease in this world was still poverty.
