Chapter 86: Strong Wind At Sea, Bad Signal (1/5)
Sengoku was in the middle of a meeting when his phone rang unexpectedly.
At first, he ignored it, but when he saw it was from one of his trusted informants, he picked it up. "What is it? I'm in a meeting. Make it quick."
"Marshal! Bad news! Master Finn's super battleship just went to sea!"
"What?!"
Sengoku shot up from his seat, startling everyone around him. The room was full of high-ranking naval officers, but all eyes were now on him.
"Why didn't you stop him?" he yelled, pacing furiously towards the door.
"Marshal, this meeting..." one of the officers timidly approached.
"Forget the meeting!"
Sengoku shoved the man aside, storming out.
"Marshal, we tried! But the super battleship is too fast! Before we could even react, it had already reached deep waters. Our patrol boats were left behind in the dust. We lost him almost immediately!"
The voice on the other end sounded defeated.
"Damn it!" Sengoku growled, slamming the phone down. Before he could catch his breath, another phone rang.
As a Marine marshal, Sengoku was always carrying four or five phone bugs, similar to how businessmen in the 1970s carried multiple pagers.
"Who is it now?" Sengoku snapped, picking up the next call.
"Grandpa Sengoku, it's Finn."
"Finn!" Sengoku's heart nearly stopped. He took a deep breath, trying to regain his composure.
"Where are you, Finn? I've been thinking, 2,000 female soldiers isn't enough. How about I let you pick another 1,000—no, make that 2,000 more?"
Knowing Finn's fondness for surrounding himself with beautiful women, Sengoku wasn't above using a little bribery to try and win him back.
"Alright, I'll think about it when I return," Finn responded, amusement creeping into his voice. He knew exactly what Sengoku was trying to do.
"Return?" Sengoku feigned ignorance. "What do you mean? Where did you go?"
"Well, Grandpa Sengoku," Finn began casually, "I just witnessed Uncle Kizaru fighting a man who looked like a fairy descended from the heavens. The guy actually managed to knock Kizaru away! I couldn't let that slide, so I'm chasing him now to bring him in. Marine's dignity is on the line."
Sengoku's eyes widened in disbelief. "Someone fought Kizaru? And knocked him back?"
Before Sengoku could ask more, Finn continued, "Oops, I'm losing the signal. The sea's too windy. Gotta go. Bye!"
Without waiting for a reply, Finn hung up and blocked Sengoku's line, leaving the Marshal fuming.
Sengoku immediately tried dialing again, but only got a busy signal. "Damn it! Get me the technical department! Expand the phone mother bug's reach in the waters around Naval Headquarters!"
He was furious.
Kizaru, fighting an unknown swordsman? Sengoku wasn't sure what to believe, so he called Kizaru himself.
Meanwhile, Finn, satisfied with his little trick, smiled as he activated his smart phone bug and connected it to Sengoku's video phone bug.
"Ding! Congratulations, host! You've been awarded a 100-fold Evangelism Card!"
Finn grinned, holding the powerful reward in his hand. His day had just gotten a whole lot better.
Back at the Naval Headquarters, in Vice Admiral Crane's residence, Momousagi had been waiting all morning.
"Sister He, why hasn't Finn come yet? Didn't he say he'd bring us those famous char siu buns?"
She was growing impatient. She hadn't even eaten breakfast, eager to try Finn's cooking, but it was nearly noon and still no sign of him.
"Don't worry, Momousagi," Vice Admiral Crane reassured her with a smile. "Finn's never been one to break a promise."
At that moment, Crane's phone rang. She had a feeling it might be news about Finn.
"Hello, Grandma He, it's Finn."
"Finn! Where are you? Why haven't you come yet?" Crane asked warmly, though there was a hint of concern in her voice.
Finn, using the same story he told Sengoku, explained that he was chasing down an enemy that had beaten Kizaru.
Crane's face grew serious. "Finn, if what you're saying is true, you shouldn't go! Anyone who can knock back Kizaru is at least Admiral-level! It's too dangerous!"
"Don't worry, Grandma. I just set up my own independent unit, so I've got to make a mark somehow. But I do feel bad about leaving without delivering your buns," Finn said with a playful tone.
Crane chuckled. "You silly boy, there's no need to apologize. Though I'll admit, Gion's been waiting eagerly for your char siu buns too."
"Big Sister Momousagi?" Finn sounded disappointed. "I wish I could've seen her before heading out."
"Is that Finn?" Momousagi quickly took the phone bug from Crane. "Finn, it's me."
Finn laughed. "Hey, Big Sister Momousagi. Sorry about the buns, but I'll make it up to you when I return. I'll even throw in some delicious sausages."
Momousagi's cheeks flushed slightly. "I've heard you're quite the smooth talker, and it seems the rumors were true," she teased.
"Ah, Big Sister, I never claimed to be otherwise," Finn replied without hesitation, his charm as disarming as ever.
Momousagi couldn't help but smile. Finn's honesty was refreshing. Most men would stumble or double back, but Finn embraced his flirtatious nature without shame.
"Well, Finn," Momousagi continued, her voice softening, "when you return, I'll hold you to that promise. I'd love to thank you properly for everything you've done."
"Consider it a date," Finn said, grinning. "Take care, Big Sister. I'll see you soon."
Momousagi's heart skipped a beat as Finn hung up. "Stay safe, you little wolf," she whispered, a smile still lingering on her lips.
