I Build a Modern Shelter in Fantasy World

Chapter 98: The Black Rose in Winter

The wolves... they really are insane.

Not long after, the Baron's guards managed to kill all five wolves cleanly, not letting them break into the Baron's residence. Luke turned and chased after the carriage driver.

"Stop!" Luke shouted firmly.

"Forgive me… forgive me!" the coachman pleaded.

Luke drew his SIG M17 from the belt holster and flicked off the safety. With a steady aim, he focused his eyes forward, targeting one of the coachman's legs.

BANG!

The gunshot rang out, startling many villagers who quickly stepped back from the fight. The 9mm bullet shot fast and struck the man's right thigh, causing him to fall weakly into the bloodstained snow.

Lena looked outside after hearing Luke's shot. Viviene also stepped out and saw the chaos unfolding in front of the Baron's residence. Lena raised her head, asking for Viviene's help.

"Viviene, please help wrap Gideon's arm with bandages," Lena said, and Viviene nodded in agreement.

Lena rushed out of the Baron's residence to see what Luke was doing. Her eyes landed on him standing over the injured coachman who was sprawled on the ground. Luke kept his pistol aimed at the man's head.

"Lyra was kidnapped?! What were you doing?! Why didn't you save her?!" Luke barked.

"I-I was scared, sir. I don't have the strength like you all do," the man explained.

She reached Luke's side, holding his pistol and trying to calm him. Luke turned, seeing Lena's sorrowful face with her eyes filled with tears.

Everyone was grieving, she was grieving, and Gideon was grieving too. But they had to stay together and discuss the best plan to fight the wolves and save Lyra.

"Killing him won't bring Lyra back. Do you understand that, Luke?" Lena asked.

Luke went silent, then clicked his tongue before locking the pistol's safety again. He looked restless, far more panicked than anyone else.

The white bandage was tied around Gideon's arm. He walked toward Luke and Lena, who stood in the village's main road, becoming the center of everyone's attention.

"This is war," Gideon said firmly.

"What are we going to do?" Luke asked anxiously.

"There's a reason why the wolves kidnapped Lyra. They're meat eaters, but Lyra once helped them."

"They'll use her as a bargaining tool against us."

"Negotiate? NO WAY!" Luke shouted.

"I'll go there and slaughter them all!" Luke snapped.

"Calm down. No matter what, you still need our help," Gideon replied.

"Then what's the plan? Tell us now, Captain."

Gideon sighed and looked aside, signaling Viviene to return inside. Viviene nodded in understanding, giving Gideon and his team free space to discuss their strategy.

Lucas arrived at Gideon's call. With his hand still wounded, Gideon was still able to give clear orders to Lucas and the others.

Lucas and the Baron's soldiers would hold the front line, focusing on defense instead of offense.

The archers and Gideon's team would stay behind the shields, taking down the wolves as they came. Gideon thought of the phalanx formation.

Lucas quickly understood what Gideon meant. Even though Gideon had trouble lifting his M4A1 with one arm, the SIG M17 was more than enough to eliminate the enemy.

Lucas split the Baron's guards in half, leaving the other half in the village for security. Once preparations were finished, Gideon marched with Luke, Lena, and 75 of the Baron's guards.

This was Gideon's first time going to war alongside the people of this world, armed with spears and shields, facing a race of mythical beasts.

The Forest Wolves had gone too far. Gideon might have considered negotiation if the problem had only been yesterday's attack. But the conflict escalated into the kidnapping of Lyra.

For Gideon, ending this conflict was not about negotiation or a truce. It was about genocide.

After two hours of marching from Rockvalley, Gideon and the others arrived near the wolves' village. The kitsune also spotted the armored human army coming from Rockvalley.

Lady Mitsuko stepped out of the village, noticing Gideon's wound on his upper right arm. She guessed something terrible must have happened in Rockvalley for him to be injured like that.

But the human soldiers weren't heading to the kitsune village, they were going to the wolves' village. Their march stopped at the front gates of the wolves' settlement.

BANG!

A sudden gunshot came from inside the wolves' village. Bullets fired wildly forward, piercing through the low-quality shields of the village soldiers, injuring several men.

"Luke!" Gideon called firmly.

Luke nodded. He broke from the shield line, crouched, and pressed his eye against the scope, aiming at a wolf who was using Lyra's SIG M17 pistol.

BANG!

He pulled the trigger, letting a 5.56mm round fly from the M4A1's barrel, striking the wolf's vital point. Lena moved up beside him, covering Luke as he advanced to retrieve Lyra's SIG M17.

"Clear!" Luke shouted.

"Lucas," Gideon ordered, and Lucas nodded.

He drew his sword and pointed it forward, commanding his soldiers to charge the wolves' village.

The battle began. Humans against wolves, Gideon against Bian. With the strength of Luke, Lena, and Gideon combined, it was easy to overpower the wolves.

Gunfire erupted, frag grenades were thrown, killing multiple wolves at once. The kitsune watched curiously, not interfering but observing the battle unfold between Gideon and the wolves.

The death toll was greater than during the uprising of the conservative wolves. Lady Mitsuko realized one thing: Gideon was trying to wipe out the forest wolf race.

The constant sound of bullets became normal to the ears. The wolves screamed, begging Bian for mercy and help. But it was too late. Nothing could save them.

Lucas halted the attack when the surviving wolves surrendered. They dropped their weapons and knelt down. Around 25 of them remained, including men, women, and children.

"Search every house. Find Lyra!" Gideon ordered.

"Lord Gideon," Lucas came close. Gideon turned to him sharply.

"What do we do with these 25 wolves?" Lucas asked.

"Bind them with—"

"CAPT!"

Luke shouted as Gideon was giving orders to Lucas. Gideon turned at once and saw Luke walking out of a house, carrying Lyra in his arms. Her stomach was drenched in blood, her face pale and weak.

"L-Lyra…?"

He cut off the conversation with Lucas, hurrying toward Luke, who laid Lyra down on the ground. Lena began checking her condition.

It was critical and alarming. The stab wound in Lyra's abdomen caused massive bleeding, and she needed treatment immediately.

If they were too late, she would die.

"Capt…"

"Sorry for making you worry," Lyra whispered.

"You'll be fine. Don't give up, Lyra!" Luke said firmly, the one who most refused to lose her.

COUGH!

Lyra coughed blood, her condition worsening. Lena's medical gear was back in the village, at least an hour away. But Lyra needed treatment in less than fifteen minutes. The stab wound was fatal.

"Lyra! LYRAAA!" Luke screamed.

"Luke…"

"Don't act reckless… you're always careless."

"I promise. I'll be careful. You have to hold on."

Luke turned, looking at Lena and Gideon with his hands covered in Lyra's blood.

"LET'S SAVE HER!" Luke shouted.

Gideon lowered his head and closed his eyes. Lena turned away, wiping her tears. The silence was heavy, broken only by Lyra's faint voice.

"Luke…"

Luke returned to her side, staring at Lyra intently, holding her small, cold hand. The cold came from both her worsening condition and the freezing air around them.

Slowly, Luke began to cry, his tears falling onto Lyra's face. Lyra smiled faintly even though her mouth was full of blood. Her time was running out.

"You really are a pain."

Her hand lost its strength, her body grew colder, and her head fell limply to the side, her eyes still open. Luke saw it happen, his face turning red with tears pouring down his cheeks.

His hands trembled as he tried desperately to save her, but it was useless. The wound was too fatal, and saving her was impossible.

"LYRAAA!" Luke screamed, his voice echoing through the battlefield.

"My lord?" Lucas asked.

Gideon opened his eyes, hearing Luke's cries of anguish at Lyra's death.

Lena tried to calm Luke, while Gideon turned his back to them, feeling grief over losing the smartest woman in his team.

"Kill them all."
