Chapter 135: Serving the Old Empress Dowager
When Song Yuanhuan came back with the boiled water, he also brought a few steaming large meat buns and two cups of tender tofu pudding that Xu Xiuxiu loved to drink, "Wifey, have a taste of your favorite tofu pudding." Song Yuanhuan saw that Xu Xiuxiu was squinting her eyes and clearly hadn't slept, so he called out to her softly.
Xu Xiuxiu opened her eyes: "I haven't washed my face or brushed my teeth!" She said indignantly, seeming somewhat unwilling.
"I'll bring your toothbrush, toothpaste, and wash basin right in for you to freshen up!" Song Yuanhuan put the food on the table to one side, turned, and walked out of the room. In a short while, he came back with a basin of water with two fish drawn underneath, a large enamel mug, and a toothbrush with toothpaste already squeezed onto it.
Xu Xiuxiu saw how attentive Song Yuanhuan was and, knowing that she was carrying a precious little one in her belly, she leaned forward without a hint of contrived attitude to start brushing her teeth. After brushing her teeth, she saw Song Yuanhuan hand her a spittoon. She spat the rinse water into it and then took the hot towel Song Yuanhuan had wrung out for her to wash and wipe her face.
"Song Yuanhuan, why are you suddenly being so nice to me?" Xu Xiuxiu sat on the bed, pampered by Song Yuanhuan like an Empress Dowager, holding the tender tofu pudding and drinking it leisurely, then she looked up at Song Yuanhuan with a puzzled expression and asked.
Could it be that he had guessed she was pregnant? And that was why he was being so solicitous? But that couldn't be possible!
"I just want you to get a taste of the kind of treatment you'll have once we have another child," Song Yuanhuan thought. Since he couldn't persuade Xu Xiuxiu, why not lure her into a trap? He doted on her every day, making her feel comfortable, hoping she might feel a flicker of desire. If there was even a flicker, he would seize the opportunity to get the important matter of having a child sorted: "If you have another child, I'll take care of you like this every day." Song Yuanhuan looked at Xu Xiuxiu full of anticipation.
"Oh! A man's word can be as unreliable as a pig climbing a tree." Xu Xiuxiu puffed up her cheeks in retort and then fell silent. Hmph, all these pleasantries were for the sake of having a child. How sinister this man's heart is!
Song Yuanhuan was speechless when Xu Xiuxiu choked him with her words. He felt slightly smothered but didn't say much. Seeing that Xu Xiuxiu seemed to really enjoy the tofu pudding, he immediately passed her the portion he had originally prepared for himself: "Here, eat more if you like it." He coaxed her and also stuffed a plump meat bun into Xu Xiuxiu's hand: "It's not too hot now, the temperature is just right." He urged, and he himself quickly took big bites of a meat bun.
After the couple finished their breakfast in silence, Song Yuanhuan observed Xu Xiuxiu's complexion for a moment: "Are you feeling better? If you're still not well, we should go to the hospital." Song Yuanhuan was obviously worried about her, the pitiful sight of her retching and vomiting as if she were going to bring up bile was something he couldn't just ignore.
"I'm feeling much better," Xu Xiuxiu shook her head and declined. She didn't plan on going to the hospital nor did she plan to let Song Yuanhuan get too happy too soon. Anyway, she needed to keep him hanging for a few more days. Seeing him trying so hard to make a baby with her without knowing she was already pregnant was actually quite amusing.
"I've got to rush back to the Military District soon, you're coming back with me!" Song Yuanhuan seemed to be asking but also commanding.
"Sure!" Anyway, the matter with Sichuan Pavilion was nearly settled, and she still had to match wits with that woman Zhou Jiaki!
These crimes were not capital offenses, but if Zhou Jiaki was convicted, her good days would be over.
Once this issue broke out, it even indirectly affected Old Sir Zhou and Zhou Yumin, but thankfully, he was a wise old man. When he transferred Lu Xiangxiang away from the Hu Lang Military District Art Troupe, he seemed to have foreseen this outcome. Although Zhou Jiaki's troubles were now exposed, it wasn't much of an impact on him.
After learning about these issues, Xu Xiuxiu inexplicably felt a sense of relief. At last, she could peacefully focus on raising and caring for her child.
Xu Jingjing, taking Xu Xiuxiu's instructions seriously, felt a strong sense of responsibility, while Song Yuanhuan, using busyness as an excuse, left little Chen Guang in her care. Xu Jingjing was quite capable; she got up early to make breakfast for little Chen Guang, watched TV with Song Chengguang after breakfast, and in the afternoon, after lunch, she went to Aunt Lai's to help trim plants and pass the time.
"Sis, you're finally back!" After spending two days with Song Chengguang and being bombarded with questions like "Where's Mom? Where's Mom?" which left her frustrated, Xu Jingjing did not dare tell Chengguang that "Mommy went to fight the bad guys." Now, seeing Xu Xiuxiu return, Xu Jingjing breathed a sigh of relief.
"How was it? Tiring to take care of the kid?" As soon as Xu Xiuxiu entered the house, she was greeted with Xu Jingjing's enthusiastic embrace. Then, holding the younger girl's hand, she moved to the couch and, with amusement, asked her feelings while checking the wound on Xu Jingjing's head.
"Tiring," Xu Jingjing exhaled wearily.
She really hadn't expected that taking care of a child would be so exhausting. Although her little nephew Song Chengguang was very well-behaved, kids have energy! Just watching cartoons with him made Xu Jingjing feel nauseated. For the first time, she detested the television. It was bad enough to watch, but to also endure the little guy's prattling praise and spoilers of "Journey to the West," which she hadn't seen, she was compelled to promote it to little Chen Guang.
"Sis, our Chen Guang has too much energy, I suddenly sympathize with you," Xu Jingjing said, looking at Song Chengguang standing by her side, hugging his aunt's leg as soon as he relieved his yearning. Not wanting to upset her little nephew, she whispered her confession.
"Our Chen Guang is one of the well-behaved ones. Wait until you're a mom, then you'll know what being tired is like," Xu Xiuxiu laughed as she rewrapped the gauze on Xu Jingjing's head, then picked up Song Chengguang, who was clinging to her leg, and kissed his cheek several times.
She had missed the little guy so much after not seeing him for a couple of days.
"Mommy!" Song Chengguang blushed with embarrassment, but since he too missed Xu Xiuxiu, the little guy tried hard to hide his shyness and began to chirp excitedly to Xu Xiuxiu about everything that had happened in the past few days.
