Chapter 80: Exploration!-2

Milo peeked through the bush to look at the monsters, it was his first time seeing a bipedal monsters but he instantly recognized the green hue of their skin and their small stature. Cyra who was ahead perched up on the tree also looked a little concerned.

If it were some other monster, she was confident in outmaneuvering them but this particular monster was tricky to deal with because they were known for their extreme cunningness and their unity. Not to mention she could see they were using different tools and from looking at their village size, their numbers must be in thousands much larger than Canis that they encounter earlier.

Milo looked up and saw Cyra signalling to turn back a little and regroup, it was something that they learned from Noah which was handy when they were not using their radio equipment. Milo just nodded and turned back giving one last look at a worker monster which was tilling the ground with what looked like a handmade tool.

They were extremely organised and if one ignored their 'monster-like' appearance, they closely resembled human capable of making tool and utilizing their surrounding to farm and hunt. The large village was bustling with activity which was shocking to him.

Soon they met up few hundred meters outside the monster's area of influence. Cyra had a stern expression on her face which told Milo that situation was not looking good for them.

" We can't handle them on our own, we have to take a detour." Cyra said resolutely but there was a problem with them changing direction. They were only halfway down the mountain, to their right was extremely rocky terrain which would be hard to traverse while if they took the left they might run into new monster or worse Sablethorn's reinforcements because that was the direction that they used to invade the village few days ago.

Cyra's mission was to scout their main base and gather intel, she couldn't get discovered early if they wanted to do it. Milo also knew how important this mission was, they had already suffered a lot of casualties during the ambush if not for Noah and his team annihilating the second flank they might already been overrun by hostile forces.

The elders and Village chief seem to suspect Noah but he knew how hard his teacher fought alongside them, there was no chance that he was faking it and even taught them valuable combat technique just to betray them in the end, it didn't make any sense.

" But wouldn't be be too late? The whole village is counting on us, we can't delay or else we will be ambushed again." Milo commented.

" I know what you are worried about but do you think we can pass through there? You have seen it yourself but don't let their small physique and 'peaceful' atmosphere of their village fool you. Just looking at the size of it, I bet there are more than a thousand of those things scattered around that area." Cyra paused for a second so that Milo understood the danger before continuing.

" You don't know because it must be your first time seeing them but they are vicious to their enemies not to mention they could use human weapons like bows and arrows, there are also cases of them being able to use support magic similar to what my brother uses. They could tear through your armour in seconds while their speed might not compare to the mutated wolves what's most threatening about them is their social intelligence. Unlike other monsters, they could form group ambush enemies and even fight against human tactics, without a substantial force we have no hope of winning against them even if we want to escape, it would be hard because they know their surrounding better." Cyra knew it was a death mission to ever breach through this monster's village.

She personally fought such a large settlement before, these things reproduce fast and could grow in thousands if left alone. They would either attack in the dead of night or use traps to lure in their enemies. The most casualties that happened during that fight was not due to head on attack but the sneak attack and the ambushes, there was also a case of them burning down their food supplies knowing the other party had to retreat. It was no different than facing a well trained human army!

" I know and I have a plan." Milo said solemnly. He knew what he needed to do even before Cyra's warnings.

" Don't tell me-" Cyra eyes widened when she saw the familiar look on Milo's face. It was a look that she had seen countless times, it was the same look any soldier would have before saying something that would lead to their death. Milo doing that could only mean one thing and she was ready to shot down his idea.

" I know with your speed you could easily break through their defence and run to the other side without them noticing. What you need most is a distraction, something that would keep them occupied, I promise you buy you enough time."

" Absolutely not! It's certain death, do you think they would just let you go? You don't know-"

" Yes, I don't know but I am not fighting them. There is a lot of equipments in my hands that could trigger many explosions, I just need to run as fast as I could after sabotaging some of their facilities. I know two of us are not ready to deal with them so this is the only way if we want to reach our destination in time. It would be over in hours but it will take days to navigate around this area, you have seen the terrain there is no chance we are making down the mountain if we take the rocky path."

Cyra simply looked at the young kid, he was barely sixteen but his resolve was firmer than some of the veterans she had seen in her life. She was torn whether to accept his proposal but the question was how would she able to face others if she just voluntarily send him to his death!
