Chapter 37: Dragon Eye of the Beholder (Part 6)
I hesitantly landed on the Reaper once Hiccup and I reached it and whimpered. The energy this ship was giving off was not welcoming in any way. I felt Hiccup scratch my head as he dismounted and I whined.
"I know love. I know. It feels off to me too, but we'll be in and out I promise." Hiccup reassured me and I nodded just barely as my earplates were flush against my head.
Hiccup and I slowly made our way around the ship looking at everything and keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary.
"This boat is definitely not from the Archipelago. These carvings, the design on the sail…I've never seen anything like this." Hiccup commented as we got a closer look at the designs put into the vessel. He brushed his hand against a metal cage near a door. "And this metal…"
I sniffed at the cage and whined backing away from it a bit. Hiccup looked at me then back at the cage skeptically.
"There something in there Kala?" He asked a bit curious, but also nervous.
The both of us slowly looked inside of the cage to see what hid in the shadows. A bird flew out of the cage towards us to try and scare us away. It worked. Hiccup and I let out a yelp and a screech respectively as we ducked away from the cage as the bird passed us by.
"Okay.." Hiccup said as the both of us took heavy breaths to calm our nerves. "Was not expecting a bird of all things to be in there.."
I nodded in agreement and let out a small whine. Guess the both of us were more worked up than we first thought if a bird flying out of an old cage spooked us. Then again, with the surrounding area and just the aura of the Reaper it is reasonable to be jittery.
Once the both of us were calm enough we slowly entered the rest of the ship to see what was hidden within. We kept an eye out for any traps as we went along and I cut a rope that almost grasped Hiccup's foot. He noticed and smiled at me thankfully.
"Thanks love." He said softly then looked at the cut rope. "Okay. Nobody goes through this much trouble unless there's something on this boat that they don't want found."
We continued cautiously through the ship and avoided all the traps we came across. I used my tail and claws to activate or move aside the traps that came into my line of sight.
The farther we got, the more jittery I became. I jumped a bit when I heard something clatter to the floor in a cage. Hiccup and I turned our attention to the cage and I whined as the object came into view. It was the bones of a dead dragon. I couldn't even tell what species.
"Dragon bones…I'm so sorry you had to see this milady…Whoever commanded this ship was certainly no friend of dragons. Let's get out of here, yeah?"
I nodded stiffly and nudged him forward gently, keeping him from a loose plank that I could tell was part of a trap. He smiled softly and allowed me to lead him away from the cages.
After a couple minutes, we reached the Commander's quarters. The door looked just as detailed as everything else on the ship, but it seemed that there was more time and effort put into just the door itself compared to everything else.
"You think you could get this open love?"
I crooned nervously and released a plasma blast towards the door. When it made contact, the door flew off its hinges and landed on the other side of the room. Hiccup scratched my head and entered the quarters looking around. I followed him cautiously.
The amount of items in the room were surprisingly very few. It seemed like the commander had packed everything away and took it all when they abandoned the ship. The only things that were left behind was a skeleton holding something that looked to be important sat in an old chair positioned behind an old desk.
The item in the skeleton's hand was like nothing Hiccup and I have ever seen before. It was a cylindrical device with metal rings around it along with an opening that was shaped like a dragon's mouth. When I got closer to it I noticed that there were seven buttons on the other side of the device. The color of the base was a woody brown and the runes upon it were a dim gold.
"What is this thing?" Hiccup asked as he got closer to the item as well. "Whatever it is, if it's on this ship, it's no good for dragons. Which means we're not leaving it here for Dagur."
I crooned in agreement and Hiccup hesitantly lifts the item from the skeleton's grasp. We both froze waiting for the trap to activate, but nothing occurred. We looked around the room and sighed in relief at the silence.
"Thank the gods." Hiccup sighed out in relief. "This ship must be too old for the traps to be in proper condition. Come on love. Let's catch up with the others."
I purred and nodded gratefully as we left the commander's quarters and made our way back to the deck. We steered clear of the inactivated traps as we retraced our steps, a calm quiet between us as Hiccup examined the item. I could tell by the look in his eyes that he was excited to see how it functioned.
When we got to the deck I froze and put my wing out to stop Hiccup. He looked at me confused then froze when he saw what I was looking at.

When Kala and I got back to the deck of the Reaper I noticed she stopped me with her wing. I looked at her confused then turned my attention to where hers was and I froze. Dagur was right in front of us with a wicked smile adorning his features.
"Hiccup! Did you miss me? 'Cause I sure missed you. Every day for three years, I thought about you." He said as he sidestepped to reveal the other riders locked up in a cage.
"Guys!" I shouted, the look of defeat in their eyes worried me.
Kala growled at Dagur as she took a defensive stance in front of me. He chuckled as if he wasn't terrified of being mauled to death by an angered dragon. A Night Fury no less.
"And you too Ms. Night Fury." Dagur commented in acknowledgment, the smile never wavering on his deranged face.
"Sorry cuz. He got the drop on us when we were gathering Johann's things.." Snotlout apologized. I took notice of the blonde mop of hair on his head and raised an eyebrow just barely in confusion.
'Why does Snotlout have dead hair on his head? No. Not the time. Focus on figuring out why Dagur is here Hiccup. Ask him about it later.'
"Uh, quiet!" Dagur quipped as he turned to the others. "Can't you see that my brother and I are having a moment?"
I glared at Dagur and kept my anger from boiling over as I responded.
"I'm not your brother and we are definitely not having a moment."
"Oh, well, I was." Dagur retorted as he looked at me once more. "Look at you, all grown up! And quite the ladies' man, I'd wager. You still with your dragon girl? Hmm? Hmm?"
"My love life is none of your business Dagur. What do you want?" I asked, my anger slowly boiling over the threshold.
"Duh, he wants the jewels." Snotlout stated as-a-matter-of-factly as he flipped the dead hair atop his head.
"He's not getting my family's jewels. No way! And I'll protect them at all cost! Also, what is with that hair?" Tuffnut asked as he looked towards Snotlout confused.
"Ha! It's royal hair, I'll have you know."
Kala and I looked at each other with a grossed out look on our faces, both having the same thought.
'What is wrong with Snotlout? Disgusting.'
"Haven't gotten rid of the Greek Chorus, I see. Anyway, yes, I'll take the jewels. His too." Dagur commanded as he gestured for one of his crew members to take the jewels from the Thorston twins.
A crew member hits Ruffnut to get the jewels from her with a smirk on his face.
"Watch it pal!" She shrieked and he just laughed at her.
She angrily spits a jewel into the man's mouth, not happy about being manhandled and laughed at in the slightest. The man starts to gag as he backs away from the cage. I facepalm with a sigh.
"Should've never asked for them to come with us.." I muttered in irritation.
"Oops, thought that was the guy. Never can tell with those two. And I'll also take whatever it is you and your dragon are hiding." Dagur said as he approached Kala and I with a hand outstretched. I stayed behind her wing keeping the item close to me and out of sight. "Come on, hand it over like a good boy. Brothers share, you know."
I got closer to Kala to act like I wanted comfort and snuck the item into the satchel on her saddle as quietly as possible. Luckily it went unnoticed.
"Kala and I aren't hiding anything, Dagur. She's just shielding me for protection from a deranged person like you." I stated as I clutched onto Kala, continuing to act as if I was seeking comfort. Kala noticed this and growled at Dagur to keep the charade going.
"Oh boy, here we go. Must we always do the same dance, Hiccup, you and I? Not that you're not a fabulous dancer."
I glared at Dagur growling a bit under my breath as Kala growled louder to warn him to stop. She was preparing to attack him, but I rested my hand on her head to get her attention and I shook my head.
"Easy Kala. Not yet."
"That's right, Ms. Night Fury. Today is not the day, but it's coming! And soon. Now, if you'll excuse me. I've got people to see, an army to build, revenge to plot. Ooh, so much to do and so little time! Isn't this exciting, Hiccup? You…You must have been so bored over the last three years." Dagur ranted as he walked about the deck, not having his eyes off me once.
"Yeah, he's got a point about that. Not enough explosions." Tuffnut said as he leaned against the cage looking bored.
"Alas, my time here has come to an end. Farewell, for now, brother. Until we meet again on the field of battle." Dagur said with a smirk as he left the Reaper with his crew in tow.
Kala huffed out smoke as she tucked in her wing. I sighed and went over to the cage the others were locked in and released them easily.
"Kala and I will go after them. You call your dragons and get off this ship." I ordered, not taking a second glance at them as I mounted Kala's back and adjusted her tailfin.
Kala shot into the air as the others ran out of the cage and called for their dragons, mounting them once they landed and shooting into the air after us.

As Dagur was preparing to leave, one of his crew members noticed Hiccup and Kala flying towards them and he looked towards his chief.
"Here they come, sir, just like you said."
Dagur smirked while holding his arms behind his back, not noticing the other dragon riders fly off the ship and hide in the heavy fog. "Still predictable, aren't you, brother?"
Some crew members positioned a catapult towards the Reaper , making it seem like it's aimed at the young man and his Night Fury.
"Fire!" Dagur ordered and the crew fired a boulder from the catapult.
Hiccup's eyes widened when he saw the boulder and he steered Kala away from the attack. He looked down at the ship Dagur resided on with a confused look.
"You missed!" He shouted, confusion in his voice.
"Hiccup, you should know by now, I never miss." Dagur stated, still unaware that the Reaper was now vacant of any life.
Hiccup realized this and looked back at the ship acting as if he was worried about the others. Dagur wasn't aware that there were no screams of fear from the vessel that slowly started to sink.
"What's it going to be, Hiccup? Catch me, save your friends? Ooh, tough one! Glad I'm not in your shoe." Dagur said as he laughed.
