Chapter 36: Dragon Eye of the Beholder (Part 5)
About an hour or so of flying later, we reached the ship graveyard. From the amount of fog in the area it was rather hard to see if it was still light out or not. I felt Kala shiver uncomfortably underneath me and scratched her head gently to comfort her. Fog reminded her of the Nest, which in turn brought up memories she would rather not live through again.
"Now this is cool." I heard Snotlout say from somewhere to my right.
I looked around the area cautiously as Kala and the other dragons slowly made their way through the fog.
"Some of these ships, I've never seen anything like them before." Astrid said in awe.
There were many ships broken apart or just abandoned. Some were recognizable as Viking ships of tribes located in the Archipelago, but others had symbols that I couldn't recognize. They could possibly belong to other tribes outside of the Archipelago or not even Vikings at all.
I took a deep breath to calm my nerves and gather my courage.
"Okay, everybody fan out! If anyone sees any signs of Dagur, sound the signal." I instructed, gaining nods from the others as we split up to search the area more efficiently.
As Kala and I were searching, I could feel her movements become more rigid the farther in we got. I smiled sympathetically and scratched behind her right earplate.
"I know you don't like it here love, but the sooner we find Dagur, the sooner we can leave and finally explore the world. You think you can hold out?"
Kala whined a bit and nodded. I could tell she was ready to bolt at any given opportunity, but knowing what was at stake she steeled herself the best she could. Although, I understood her nervousness. The things that Dagur tried to do to her when he found out she could transform scarred her deeply.
I shook my head to clear my thoughts. I did not need to be clouded with anger at the moment. I don't even want to think about what would happen.
After a couple of minutes of searching I noticed a very intact ship that looked quite ominous in what seemed like the center of the graveyard.
"That's gotta be the Reaper .." I said lowly, examining the exterior of the abandoned vessel.
Kala's earplates went flat against her head as a shiver coursed through her. I scratched her head comfortingly as we flew in place, not really wanting to get any closer to the ship.
The others met up with us a few minutes later.
"Not a sign of Dagur." I said, already knowing the others didn't find him either.
"Looks like we've got here first. What's the plan?" Astrid asked, a hint towards her trying to please me.
I fought the urge to glare at her as I replied. "We wait."
"Wait a minute. For how long? This fog really gives Meatlug the willies." Fishlegs said, some fear hidden within his words.
"He has a point." Astrid commented. "We can't wait here forever."
"We can't just leave Johann's treasure here either." I retorted, trying the best I could to not let any anger towards Astrid seep through. "Dagur will steal all of it."
"And use the profit to build a new armada." Astrid put together, yet again trying to please me.
"Not if we steal them first!" Ruffnut stated happily.
"That is the dumbest idea I've ever heard! I hereby disown you." Tuffnut said with his arms crossed and I shook my head at their antics.
I thought over what Ruffnut said then smiled. If we grabbed Johann's wares for him, we wouldn't have to worry about Dagur getting his hands on any of it. Which in turn would leave him with no funds to build up a new armada.
"Actually, you know what? I actually like it!"
The others looked at me shocked and Ruffnut smiled in triumph.
"Welcome back to the family." Tuffnut stated happily as he pat Ruffnut's back.
"Here's the plan. We search the ship, gather Johann's treasure and take it back to Berk. But keep your eyes open for Dagur. He could show up anytime.." I explained, making sure each of them were listening.
All of us froze as we heard a hissing noise. I looked down at the water and spotted a couple of large eels looking up at the dragons.
'Thank the gods we haven't landed on any of the ships yet.' I thought as I watched them try to jump out of the water towards the dragons.
"Those are huge eels.." Fishlegs squeaked out.
We all nodded in agreement, not taking our eyes off the angered creatures below.
"What should we do about them? If we land on the ship, they'll surely follow and try to pull it down with us." Astrid reasoned and I groaned, starting to get annoyed at her comments.
"I don't know. I didn't consider the possibility of eels being in the area." I shot back, losing a bit of my composure.
"Pardon me. Does anyone else think that Johann could have warned us about…I don't know…THE GIANT SCREAMING EELS?!" Snotlout asked, very terrified.
"Snotlout, would you relax? As long as we're in the air they can't get us. Let's just wait until they get bored and leave." I said, starting to question why I even asked for them to come along. I had forgotten just how annoying they could get in situations like this.
"That could take ages!" Snotlout whined.
"Okay fine! Kala, can you blast the eels please?" I asked my dragoness calmly.
Kala nodded a bit and released a plasma blast aimed at the eels. The blast hit one dead on and it scared them all away.
I smiled and scratched her head, scratching right behind her earplates to help calm her nerves.
"There. No more eels. Now we can land on the ship Johann uses as storage and get his wares."
Everyone nodded and we all finally landed on the ship Johann described to us. Although, why would he store his goods on a ship right next to the Reaper ? Whatever the case, it doesn't matter at the moment.
I was the only one to not dismount as I considered exploring the Reaper .
"Okay, you guys gather Johann's treasure. Quietly. Kala and I will go explore the Reaper ." I decided.
The others looked at me in shock. I just rolled my eyes.
"Are you nuts?!" Snotlout asked, his voice wavering.
"Why do you want to explore the ship Johann warned us about?" Astrid asked.
"Oh I don't know..how about the fact that it's covered stem to stern with traps? Why would someone arm the vessel to the teeth with traps? What's on there that they don't want people to find?" I questioned, annoyance very prominent in my tone.
Before they could even retort, I adjusted Kala's tailfin and she took off towards the Reaper .
