Hogwarts: I can see Magic Paths

Chapter 14: Chapter 14 - The Crystal Ball

"Hagrid!"

In the early morning, Felix found the towering half giant in the chilly late November morning. Wrapped up like a dumpling as Felix couldn't lower his arms to sides, due to the amount of layers he wore. Yet, he didn't mind not being able to tie his shoes, rest his arms on his side or the ability to walk normally. He was warm and that is what Felix cared about most.

"Felix, isn't that a bit much. It's not that cold." Hagrid looked down in surprise.

"I'm warm, so that's what counts." Felix simply replied. "So how are the boards I asked you to look over last week?"

"All dried and finished." Hagrid smiled. "I don't really understand your idea, but I wish you luck."

Picking up ten boards that looked very similar to a skateboard. Felix smiled as he began his waddle up to the castle carrying the boards in his arms. Since these were the boards he will transform into hoverboards, he is determined to make them before Christmas. For he plans to use one to get around the castle, and give them out to his friends.

He wouldn't lie, but he was clueless on what to give his few friends. Unlike the professors who he wants to get revenge on in writing books to break their understanding of their subjects. Felix could only rack his head, since he didn't want to give them books. So he decided to give them a hoverboard.

--

Upon returning to the castle, Felix walked into the Great Hall, where he would have plenty of space. Outside of meal time, quite a few students gather to discuss, gossip, do homework or just hang out. Hence, upon waddling in with ten boards in hands, a few looked over before returning to what they were doing.

After placing his boards at the Gryffindor Table, Felix notices a few fifth years playing with a crystal ball. While he noticed a woman with fiery red hair among them that he recognized. Felix was confused about what they were trying to achieve while using the crystal ball wrong.

If he guesses right, they were trying to predict the future without a clear idea of what they are looking for. Since crystal balls were more for scrying or tracking from the little research he did on that type of magic. Otherwise, unless a big event is taking place and a solid guess of what is going down, it's nearly impossible to get snippets of the most likely future.

Which is what he thought and lines up with what Nicholas Flamel did within the second Fantastic Beasts movie. Where he was able to pick up what would happen later that night with the cemetery.

"Lily, what are you guys doing?" Felix approached and asked.

"Predicting the future, supposedly." Lily snorted.

Felix just nodded lightly to these words, while looking at Lily's few friends. If he recalled, the one using the crystal ball was Jackie Whitmore, a mixed color girl and muggleborn. Alongside, Maddie Greenwood, a half blood with slight silver streak in her hair due to her veela ancestry. Only due to the blood being very thin as it was generations ago, besides a slightly good look and a streak of silver, she didn't inherit any other veela traits.

"What kind of future are you hoping to predict? Unless you have a clear idea or meet a certain condition like a major event, it won't work." Felix asked.

"Really? I didn't hear about that in class." Maddie said unsure.

"Just like Arithmancy where one uses numbers. Divination needs something to work off of afterall." Felix answered. "While one can skip a few steps after tons of practice and experience, that requires years of practicing or immense talent."

"How do you know so much? You are just a first year aren't you?" Jackie asked.

"I dabbled in it." Felix replied.

Since basically calling himself a seer to Dumbledore upon meeting him. Felix did do a bit of research into the subject and would study it more in depth from time to time. Since he was unsure if he might need it in the future for a project whim. While he also just wanted to dabble in various magics like he told John and Angel on the boat ride to the castle.

"Then can you do it?" Lily asked.

"I can attempt." Felix removed his many layers and sat down in some casual clothes.

"What should I attempt to predict?" Felix asked.

"Why not do Christmas? You said it needs an event and it is a large event." Maddie said.

Felix thought about it for a moment then nodded. Then he lightly moved his fingers around the crystal ball and the fog inside began to shift much to the girl's amazement. Then images that appeared frighten them.

For what appeared was Felix's home street basically laid in ruins as Felix leaned behind a blown up car for cover as he threw spells. While those in black robes and silver masks circled the street firing spells back. Upon seeing such a thing, Felix stopped his movement and allowed the imaginations to fade.

"Well, it seems I need more practice." Felix coughed lightly and ran away.

He would ponder on the imagines later since what appeared has a great chance of occurring otherwise the crystal ball wouldn't project such imagines. Since while not always accurate, the crystal ball would show options with high chances of occurring. If it is too far out, then the accuracy is extremely low.

Such as if there is a ninety percent accuracy when peeking at tomorrow, then a month from now may reach maybe ten percent. While this is Felix's current understanding of divination and why many don't like it. Most want to peek months or even years in advance and future paths are like the pathways he can see, mixed together and separated into countless branches.

'It seems I will need to put some focus on defensive and offensive magic for the next month.' Felix thought to himself.

Hence even if he felt the event might not happen, he decided to prepare a bit in advance. Since it would be a good thing either way and learning some combat magic in this troubling time is a good thing. It is better to prepare for the worst then be caught unready.

After Felix ran away, Maddie commented. "He didn't finish explaining the conditions to use the crystal ball."

--

Later that night, after finishing up his hoverboard, Felix began to study combat magic and tactics. It's not so much to learn fancy or strong spells, but to expand his knowledge. While he could be said to be talented, he is still a first year. Hence, trying to study spells to compete with adults who are trained in dark arts or like to throw unforgivables.

Well, it is more worthwhile to train his tactics and expand his knowledge base to combat them while using magic he is familiar with. Trying to cram and master new spells to rely on he hasn't touched upon in a short period, didn't seem smart. However, learning a few spells is also worth looking into since he had about a month to prepare.

'As long as it is not a top level Death Eater or Voldemort himself. I should be able to hold my own if I am careful for a while.' Felix thought to himself.

For the option of not going home, well Felix really wanted to leave Hogwarts for Christmas. It's been a while since he saw William and Mr. Granger. Also it is warmer at home than in this castle.

"Are you interested in dueling?" Angel asks upon seeing the stack of books.

"A bit." Felix replied.

"Then do you want a partner to practice with?" Angel asked with a bit of nervousness.

Felix then noticed that Angel slightly shifted in her seat and looked hopeful he would accept. Clearly she was interested in dueling, well that is what Felix guessed she was excited about. So he nodded since Angel alongside John did do a lot for him.

"Alright, let's ask Professor Flitwick tomorrow for some tips. He did win a tournament before and he should know of a spot to practice at." Felix said. "It's probably easier to ask a professor then sneaking around after all."

Angel just nodded.
