Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Care of Magical Creatures
Outside Hogwarts Castle, on an open space at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, this was the venue for the Care of Magical Creatures class.
Looking at the unfamiliar faces, this was Ian's first time taking classes with students of the same grade.
"Sure enough, the development in Europe and America is super fast."
Compared to the immaturity of the first-years, the third-year wizards were already a little more experienced, and at a glance, Ian noticed that quite a few of the girls had matured.
At the same time, Ian suddenly felt two sneaky figures attacking him from behind. Thanks to the vigilance he had developed over a long period of time in the apocalypse, he instantly took a step forward and dodged when the other party approached.
Ian turned around and found that they were his two roommates. He spread his hands and said with a smile, "Good afternoon! I'm sorry, you two didn't scare me."
Andre looked at Ivy with some dissatisfaction. "This is all your fault. I said it would be fine if we were alone. Two people would be easy to discover."
Upon hearing this, Ivy just shrugged with an innocent expression on his face.
"Gentlemen, class time is almost up."
Just when Andre was about to say something, a voice next to him suddenly interrupted, and a boy with a somewhat helpless tone reminded him.
Ian looked at the other person. The man in the blue-patterned robe was, as expected, also a Ravenclaw. However, he wasn't familiar with the third-years, so he couldn't even remember their names.
"Hey, Scott, come on. Even if Professor Kettleburn is here, he won't forbid us from talking. This is Care of Magical Creatures, not Potions."
Upon hearing this, Andre immediately fought back, shaking the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in his hand to prove the correctness of his words.
Before the other party could say anything else, Ivy immediately signaled with his eyes and looked to the other side. It turned out that Professor Kettleburn, who was in charge of teaching this course, was already standing not far away.
The elderly professor only had one arm and half a leg left, so even with a prosthetic limb, he had to rely on crutches to move around.
"Very good, you are all here!" the old wizard said enthusiastically, his voice powerful and clear.
"Come and have a look; the lesson we are going to learn today is about cruppies."
The Crup is a breed bred by wizards. It is very similar to the Jack Russell Terrier, but the difference is that the Crup's tail is forked, shaped like a scissor, hence the name Crup.
This dog is extremely loyal to wizards but ferocious toward Muggles.
At the beginning of the course, Professor Kettleburn asked the students to form groups of four and get to know a young Crup.
"Don't underestimate these little guys because they are small. They can eat almost any food that is equal to their own body size," Professor Kettleburn explained as he walked unsteadily among the students, bending down from time to time and lovingly patting the little Crups on their heads.
"Now, you can feed these little guys the food I prepared in advance and try to build a relationship with them."
Ian, his two roommates, and Scott were put into a group, and Professor Kettleburn assigned them a light grey puppy.
At this time, they squatted on the ground and surrounded the little puppy.
It seemed a little uneasy at the moment, barking in a baby voice, obviously full of vigilance toward them. It would only shake its forked tail happily when Professor Kettleburn stroked it.
"Oh, little one?" Andre frowned and used a dry branch to pick out some cow viscera from a small bucket nearby.
"Eat, little one?"
The light grey Crup came over to sniff it, then immediately pounced on it and devoured it.
"Look, the little guy's tail is wagging, which means it recognizes me." Andre said with some pride.
"I think we all need to get acquainted with this little guy, so let's take turns feeding him."
Koster on the side suggested this, then he followed suit, reaching a branch into the barrel. However, he stirred it a little too hard, causing the internal organs to emit a pungent smell.
A fishy smell hit Ian's nose, but he remained calm, having seen more exaggerated things in the apocalypse.
But Ivy, on the side, was in trouble. He immediately covered his nose and said with some disgust, "No, I don't need it!"
At this time, Professor Kettleburn asked the students loudly in the crowd, "Can anyone tell me how to get a license from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures if I want to legally keep a Crup?"
It was time for extra credit!
As soon as Professor Kettleburn finished speaking, Ian noticed that the students on the Ravenclaw side were much more energetic. Almost as if by reflex, they all raised their hands, in stark contrast to the little badgers lying flat on their faces next to them.
"It's indeed a Ravenclaw full of top students!" Ian thought with some emotion, but he didn't care much about these scores and was very casual about it.
Of course, the premise is that he will not be deducted points. If points are deducted, he would still find a way to make up for it, based on the principle of not delaying or owing points.
"Then please... Miss Alsop, answer this question."
Professor Kettleburn glanced at the students who raised their hands, and finally asked a Hufflepuff girl to answer the question. In Ian's opinion, this was indeed the professor taking care of the Hufflepuffs, who always ranked last in the House points standings.
Miss Alsop, who was called, stood up with a triumphant smile and began to answer the question according to the script.
"Any wizard who wishes to apply to keep a Crup must complete a simple test before being able to obtain a license from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.
Moreover, under the requirements of the Statute of Secrecy, the owners of Crups must use a painless cutting charm to sever their peculiar tails when the Crups are six to eight weeks old to prevent the Crups from attracting the attention of Muggles.
Furthermore, owners of Crups must ensure that they do not allow them to breed freely in Muggle-controlled communities."
"Very good, well said." Professor Kettleburn gave the other party a thumbs up with his only remaining hand.
"This answer is very standard. I have nothing to add. For this, I will give Hufflepuff 10 points."
This was also Professor Kettleburn's routine in class. He would ask a question in each class, and if a student answered it correctly, he would use up the extra points for this class at once.
Moreover, these questions were not too difficult. Most of them were basic knowledge, and the answers could be found just by flipping through the book.
This also made everyone raise their hands enthusiastically in the Care of Magical Creatures class.
After adding the points, Professor Kettleburn continued with the class.
"The Crups you are meeting now are all five-week-old little guys. In the next two weeks, I need you to get familiar with them as quickly as possible.
Because in two weeks, you will be the ones to remove their strange tails, using a painless cutting charm."
As the students were in an uproar, Professor Kettleburn continued loudly:
"So in the next two weeks, you will not only have to learn how to raise these little guys, but you must also practice magic in your spare time. You must ensure that nothing unexpected happens when you cast the Painless Cutting Charm."
"Poor little fellow, you're almost losing your tail," Andre said with some ill intent, touching the puppy's tail.
Unfortunately, this cute dog had no idea what it was going to face next. After being petted, it stared with its eyes wide open and rubbed its head against Andre's trouser legs.
At the end of the class, Professor Kettleburn assigned an assignment about the history of wizards breeding Crups.
