"Many Witches and Wizards, talented though they are in the area of loud bangs and smells and sudden disappearing, are yet unable to penetrate the veiled mysteries of the future," Trelawney went on, her enormous, gleaming eyes moving from face to nervous face.
"It is a Gift granted to few. You, boy!" She suddenly yelled, looking right at Neville, who almost toppled off his pouffe, "Is your grandmother well?"
"I-I think so," Neville said tremulously.
"I wouldn't be so sure if I were you, dear," Trelawney said, the firelight glinting on her long emerald earrings. Neville gulped audibly, horror sweeping across his round face.
Trelawney continued placidly, "We will be covering the basic methods of Divination this year. The first term will be devoted to reading the tea leaves. Next term we shall progress to palmistry. By the way, my dear," she shot suddenly at Parvati Patil, "beware a red- haired man."
Parvati gave a startled look at their table, which was right behind her, and edged her chair away from it.
"In the summer term," Trelawney went on, "we shall progress to the crystal ball - if we have finished with fire-omens, that is. Unfortunately, classes will be disrupted in February by a nasty bout of flu. I myself will lose my voice. And around Easter, one of our numbers will leave us forever."
A very tense silence followed this pronouncement, but Professor Trelawney seemed to be entirely unaware of it.
"I wonder, dear," she said to Lavender Brown, who was nearest and shrank back into her chair, "If you could pass me the largest silver teapot?"
Lavender, looking relieved, stood up, took an enormous teapot from the shelf and put it down on the table in front of Trelawney.
"Thank you, my dear. Incidentally, that thing you are dreading - it will happen on Friday the Sixteenth of October," Trelawney said to her. Lavender trembled as she sat back down.
"Now, I want you all to divide into pairs. Collect a teacup from the shelf, come to me, and I will fill it. Then sit down and drink; drink until only the dregs remain. Swill these around the cup three times with the left-hand then turn the cun upside down on its saucer; wait for the last of the tea to drain away, then give your cup to your partner to read. You will interpret the patterns using pages five and six of Unfogging the Future. I shall move among you, helping and instructing. Oh and dear-" she caught Neville by the arm as he made to stand up, "- after you've broken your first tea cup, would you be so kind as to select one of the blue patterned ones? I'm rather attached to the pink."
Sure enough, Neville had no sooner reached the shelf of teacups than there was a shattering sound of breaking China.
Professor Trelawney swept over to him, holding a dustpan and brush, asking him to gather a blue patterned teacup.
Lucifer and Hermione had their teacups filled and sat down across from Harry and Ron.
Hermione took a swig of tea, and found it to be scalding hot. She choked it down and began to cough a bit.
"Are you alright?" Lucifer asked her, concerned.
"Fine... just peachy," she smiled crookedly and took another, larger swig, prepared for it this time.
When they finally both had their tea gone, they did exactly as Trelawney said, swilling around the dregs and turning them upside down until the remnants of tea were gone.
They gave the now emptied cup, except for the dregs, to each other and began to decipher the patterns.
"Okay... it looks like... you have something in here that looks like... the Sun... which indicates Great Happiness....but then you've also got a skull, meaning... danger is in your path... but there's something else...Haha! Of course! A book, great wisdom lies ahead.” Lucifer said, the last one with a small chuckle.
"I guess I know where the happiness comes from," Hermione said, cheeks started to burn, as she watched Lucifer read through her cup with a smile on her face.
“Anyway, I-I see... an Octopus, th-that represents danger... I see a-a Cross, which could mean Death, a f-funeral, suffering, or sacrifice... a-and something that looks like it c-could be a Demon, that represents Anger o- or discord,” Hermione was surprised she managed to get that out with how stuttered she had just become.
“I have no idea what any of this could mean...” Lucifer said, normally shrugging his shoulders.
Hermione looked at him. Like her, he was used to logical thinking and questions that always had definitive answers, but Divination was already proving to be blind assumptions to them.
Professor Trelawney sauntered over to their table and looked at Harry's cup after both he and Ron were being snide about their cups.
She went on to explain that Harry's cup was not a happy cup, "Neither is yours, honestly," Hermione said to Lucifer.
Trelawney then freaked out and said Harry had the Grim, and that it was an omen of death, "So someone's going to die? Is it Potter or someone else?" Lucifer asked her.
Trelawney, with her enlarged eyes, looked at him, frightened, "Let me see your cup." Hermione handed his cup to her, but the moment she glanced in it, she dropped it, causing it to break.
"What?" Lucifer asked, wondering how absurd this might be.
"My dear... y-you..." Trelawney had serious trouble speaking, like she was going into shock as she looked at Lucifer, "You're the D-Devil..Abaddon. Belial....Prince of Darkness!” She tried to pry her eyes from Lucifer, as though looking at him any longer would cause her own death.
“Oh, what rubbish?!” Hermione asked getting irritated.
But, Professor Trelawney is somehow able to both ignore her insulted remarks, then gain enough courage to look at Lucifer again, “But before you fell, you were known as Samael.
The Lightbringer!”
Atmosphere suddenly turned cold, it's like a void it being created, so that no student dared to interfere the ominous talk between Trelawney and him, even Hermione seemed to have shut her mouth.
Her throat was blocked.
Lucifer crossed his legs under the table, and replied to his Professor's remark, devoid of any emotion, behind his voice, “I don't go by that name anymore.”
“My boy,” But Trelawney didn't seem to have sensed anything wrong in the students paled faces around her, she tiptoed sideways over his broken cup, as to not injure her foot, “That was a name that connotated your father's love for you.”
“Right....” Lucifer scoffed in disgust, his eyes turned murderous, even ignoring Hermione's palm on his thigh to calm down, “Was casting his son into Hell also an expression of his love?”
“Oh, dear, God didn't cast you out of Heaven because he was angry wit-” Trelawney's little fingers even moved forward to touch the boy's cheek, but he swatted it away, glaring at her the whole time.
“How can you presume to know God's intentions?!” Lucifer was now really starting to get angry with this Professor, his voice started to break.
“Oh, I don't....I can't.” Trelawney shook her both hands, as if even the thought is ridiculous, she only prides herself in seeing the future with her inner eye. Not read God's mind.
“Then maybe stick within the limits of your intellectual capacity.” Lucifer now also ridiculed the teacher, Hermione can have all the punches she would like to throw, but he thought Trelawney deserved it.
Surprisingly, he didn't hear any gasps from the girl beside, Lucifer even wondered for a moment why people are so quiet.
“Or maybe my simplicity offers me a different perspective. God cast you out because He needed you to do the most difficult of jobs,” Trelawney seemed to have gained an upper hand in the conversation, now pointing towards herself, puffing her chests a bit, “It was a gift.”
“Gift?!” Lucifer questioned in utter disbelief, now putting his hands down on their shared table, looking at Trelawney dead in the eyes, “He shunned me.....He vilified me. He made me a torturer!”
“Can you even begin to fathom what it was like? Eons spent providing a place for dead mortals to punish themselves?” Lucifer's eyes narrowing, his brows seemed to have frowned, showing how much angry he really was.
“I mean, why do they blame me for all their little failings? As if I'd spent my days sitting on their shoulder, forcing them to commit acts they'd otherwise find repulsive.”
And the point to which this conversation was affecting him.
“Oh, the Devil made me do it. I have never made any one of them do anything.....Never.” Lucifer deliberately emphasized the last word, to make these stupid mortals understand, he wasn't responsible for any of the sins they have committed.
“My boy, what happened to you is unfair....” Trelawney now also became sad a little bit, only she wasn't discouraged enough to just stop talking altogether.
“Unfair?....This is unjust. For all eternity, my name will be invoked to represent all their depravity!” Lucifer now slammed his right hand down on the table, sending Hermione's own empty cup down the floor breaking it into pieces.
She couldn't even catch the damn cup, while it was falling down. That's how serious the atmosphere really was.
People were already scared to death, not even trying to interrupt like usual.
Even Ron knows politely when to shut his mouth, and take an oath.
“That is the gift that my father gave me.....” Lucifer reached the conclusion to their talk, now finding both of their time being wasted.
“It was an act of love.”
“How do you know?”
“Because you are his favorite son, Sam-”
“Do NOT call me that, please!” Lucifer shouted in the room, his voice echoing, loads of sweat could be seen on Hermione's face, knowing this is all going downhill.
“You are his fallen angel. But here's the thing: When angels fall, they also... rise....All you have to do is embrace all that you are.” Trelawney now gained a deep breath, as if the next thing is even more difficult to speak out, “Accept... the fact-you're also the Harbinger of Destruction!”
Hermione's face turned white. She hadn't heard that since nearly the end of their First Year, when that Centaur, Bane, called Lucifer that.
Bane said he was foretold as the 'Harbinger of Destruction,' so the planets said.
They had hid this from everyone, and now all of the Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs in her year knew about that.
“What exactly does that mean?!” Hermione asked, gritting her teeth, somehow now being able to open her mouth, the huge lump inside her throat removed.
It's not only her.
"It means..." Trelawney paused to inhale, "it means he will cause great genocide, cause green fields to turn grey, entire buildings to collapse-"
“Oh, what bullshit!” Hermione said in a loud voice.
"Really, Hermione?" Parvati asked her, she has also gained her voice, "Last year, did his eyes not glow red when he was almost killed by that snake Harry set on him?”
"Exactly," Lavender agreed with her.
"They were definitely red..." Hannah said shyly.
"First of all, Harry did not set the snake to attack him, or Justin," Hermione said, trying her best to hold her temper down.
“It sure looked like it, especially when it lunged right at Lucifer," Seamus said, agreeing with Parvati and Lavender.
There seemed to be many whispers around the entire classroom, after their mouths were unsealed.
"I don't believe Harry sent that snake to attack me," Justin chimed in.
"So his eyes glowed red when he defended himself, big deal," Dean said in defense of him.
"You don't think it's-" Lavender started.
"ENOUGH!" Windows shattered outwards from Lucifer's outburst.
He was shaking with frustration, looking around at all of them with an expression of anger, then punched around the nearby pillar creating a small hole into it.
His breathing wasn't calming down; before Hermione could even try to calm him down, he grabbed his stuff and exited the classroom.
"Yes... yes I think - this is a good place to stop for today..." Trelawney said meekly, "u-until we meet again..." Hermione quickly gathered up her things and went straight after Lucifer.
By the time she did catch up with him, he was about to walk into Transfiguration, "Lucifer!" She quickly caught up with him, "We have to go to Muggle Studies, then Arithmancy, remember?"
"Yeah... you're right..." Since they had rushed out so quickly, they were able to head to Muggle Studies and rewind time for the first time the whole year.
They stood in the empty class.
