Chapter 32: Claiming the Court
After a long overnight drive—Coach Ukai and Takeda-sensei taking turns at the wheel—the team finally arrived at Morisen High School in Saitama early in the morning. Those who hadn't gotten much rest were visibly drowsy, yawning and blinking sleep from their eyes.
Except, of course, for Hinata, who was brimming with energy.
"Kenma! Where's the Tokyo Skytree?"
The excited first-year had already latched onto his friend from Nekoma, scanning the horizon like a tourist.
"That's… not here," Kenma mumbled.
The Tokyo Skytree, one of Japan's most iconic landmarks, was actually located in Sumida, Tokyo—not Saitama. But none of that mattered to Hinata, who eagerly pointed to an ordinary transmission tower nearby.
"Look! Is that it? The Tokyo Tower?!"
Kenma didn't even look. "That's literally just a power line tower."
Kuroo, overhearing the conversation, snorted and glanced at Daichi, wearing the same smirk that screamed we've been here before.
"Déjà vu, huh? Same energy as last time."
Tanaka and Nishinoya had made the exact same mistake during their previous Tokyo visit, much to everyone's amusement.
"To outsiders, every Tokyo tower looks like the Skytree," Daichi sighed.
Sugawara shook his head. "And we're not even in Tokyo. This is Saitama."
Further back in the group, Kageyama, still groggy, quietly mulled over something. Wait… so that wasn't the Tokyo Tower?
Meanwhile, Hayato was helping Kiyoko and Yachi with their luggage. When Yachi tried to insist they could handle it, Hayato brushed it off.
"You two are going to be running around for us the entire week. This is the least I can do."
That kind of casual kindness was why he got along so easily with teammates across all grades—he treated everyone with respect, regardless of the strict senpai-kouhai hierarchy that often weighed heavily in sports clubs.
A loud voice suddenly called out.
"Hinata! You got taller again?" It was Lev, bounding over like a golden retriever.
Kenma immediately scolded him. "Could you not be loud first thing in the morning?"
"I grew two millimeters!" Hinata boasted proudly.
Lev gaped. "WHAT?! Seriously?! Ughhh…"
After stowing their luggage, showering, and changing, both teams made their way to the gym. Warm-ups began immediately. Once the team was gathered, Coach Ukai called out:
"Today, I'll be rotating players constantly. Everyone, stay ready."
This camp wasn't just about polishing starting lineups. It was about preparing for the future—training underclassmen, testing chemistry, and expanding tactical versatility.
The first practice match was against Fukurodani.
Hinata, Kageyama, and Asahi started in the front row. Daichi, Tanaka, and Tsukishima formed the back row, with Nishinoya rotating in for Tsukishima. Hayato began on the bench.
He didn't mind. Ukai had made it clear: everyone would rotate through. Watching others play gave him a chance to observe and analyze.
The first serve went to Fukurodani. A chance ball came over, received cleanly by Nishinoya.
Then, it happened.
Hinata made his move—and Kageyama followed. With pinpoint awareness, he scanned the blockers' positions, calculated the ball's trajectory midair, and whispered almost to himself:
"Stop the ball. Stop it—right there."
He set.
Hinata soared, eyes locked in, and BOOM—the New Quick connected.
The spike landed clean. The blockers hadn't even moved.
Karasuno erupted.
"Ohhhhhh! Kageyama nailed it on the first try!"
"Shut up, I saw it," Kageyama muttered—but a pleased smirk tugged at his mouth.
From Fukurodani's side, Bokuto blinked. "Huh? That weird quick attack is back?"
Akaashi shook his head. "No… this one's different."
Other players on the sidelines whispered in awe. Even if Hinata made it look easy, the real trick was Kageyama's precision. That kind of set—stopping the ball mid-air at the perfect hitting point—wasn't something just anyone could replicate.
Hinata pumped a fist in the air.
But Bokuto crossed his arms. "Don't get cocky. This is just the beginning."
Over the next few rallies, the New Quick Attack had about a 50% success rate. Ukai didn't seem discouraged—this was just the start of camp.
They tested other new tactics, too: the libero set with Nishinoya, and multi-player attack rotations, though both were still rough in execution.
During the first technical timeout at 16–10, with Karasuno behind, Coach Ukai turned to Hayato.
"You ready to go in?"
"Been ready," Hayato said, standing and stretching.
He subbed in for Tanaka, giving his teammate a firm high-five before jogging onto the court.
"Let's catch up," he said to Hinata, patting his shoulder.
"Yes, Hayato-senpai!"
Hinata nodded. Hayato signaled behind his back, and Sugawara, now playing Setter, understood immediately.
"Hinata—decoy."
Hinata blinked, then smiled wide. It was time to play a different kind of Quick.
Fukurodani served. The ball floated over and was received by Daichi. Hinata exploded forward like he always did, his speed drawing all the defenders' attention.
"Block him!"
"It's that Quick again!"
"But wait—that's not Kageyama—!"
Amid the confusion, Hayato slipped through the blind spot.
Sugawara set—clean, calculated, perfect.
Hayato smashed it down the line, scoring the point before Fukurodani's libero could adjust.
"Let's goooo!"
"Next ball's yours too, Setter!"
Hayato and Sugawara high-fived. Sugawara grinned—not because of the point, but because Hayato hadn't called him Sugawara-senpai. On court, Hayato called him Setter—a show of trust and respect.
"Alright, let's catch up!"
Hayato's energy elevated everyone around him. Karasuno roared to life.
The climb had begun.
