Haikyuu: Reborn in Karasuno

Chapter 31: Summer Vacation

"Hayato-senpai! How was my performance just now?"

"Amazing! I've always believed Hinata is a genius. And of course, Kageyama, you too. You both pulled off the New Quick Attack in just one week—that's incredible."

After his post-match review, Coach Ukai gave everyone a break. Hinata, no longer able to contain his excitement, pulled Kageyama over to Hayato. Smiling wryly at their eager faces, Hayato patted both of their shoulders, clearly proud.

Hinata awkwardly scratched the back of his head, while Kageyama nodded, visibly pleased by the praise from his senpai. But sensing they were getting carried away, Hayato gently reminded them the new Quick Attack still needed work and consistency.

Sugawara had already said the same moments before. With Hayato reinforcing it, the two first-years grew more focused and serious.

The duo's progress fired up the rest of the team. As regular training wrapped up, the multi-attack strategy Coach Ukai had proposed just before Hayato left for his overseas trip was finally taking shape under Daichi's lead. Now that Hayato was back, the strategy's scope could expand. A system that relied on full-team synergy only benefited from more variety.

On the side, Nishinoya was practicing with Asahi. Hayato, watching them, quickly recognized the technique—libero jump sets. Though the Ace position had shifted with Hayato's arrival, Nishinoya still trusted Asahi deeply and wanted to support him. Asahi didn't disappoint. The two grew stronger together.

Hayato saw no issue with this. Starting positions should always be earned. If you don't want to fall behind, you have to work harder.

"Hayato, what are you spacing out for? Come train with us! After I set for Asahi, it's your turn!" Nishinoya called out, waving.

"Eh? Me too?"

"What kind of question is that? We're teammates—we all get stronger together."

Puffing his chest proudly, Nishinoya delivered his cool declaration.

"Nishinoya-senpai is so cool!" Hinata immediately chimed in, his voice full of admiration. Slightly flustered, Nishinoya offered to buy him an ice pop later—after all, it was a senior's job to take care of the juniors.

While the pair continued practicing on the side, Hayato watched them with a hint of melancholy. He suddenly thought of his former teammates.

"I can't go back... but I'm not alone now, am I?"

Smiling to himself, Hayato shook off the feeling and joined Nishinoya and Asahi on the court.

Later, after practice ended, Hayato took Hinata and Kageyama to visit Grandpa Ukai. After introductions, Hayato had the first-years demonstrate their signature Freak Quick. The old coach was impressed—until they attempted the New Quick.

Attempt after attempt failed. Ten straight misfires.

Just as Grandpa Ukai was about to suggest they take a break, a sudden impact—like the flapping of wings, dark feathers scattering—slammed into the gym. The New Quick finally landed. Even the elementary school kids watching gasped.

"Amazing…"

"Yeah, Hinata's partner is really strong too!"

Grinning like a fox, Hayato turned to Grandpa Ukai.

"How's that, Coach? Karasuno's newest weapon."

"That was… truly amazing."

Grandpa Ukai stared at the pair in awe. He had already seen Hinata's lightning reflexes and raw athleticism and thought he had the potential to rival the Little Giant if not for his technical limits.

But Kageyama… his setting was surgical—unnaturally precise for someone so young. That level of accuracy was beyond genius.

The two first-years pumped their fists in silent celebration. Seeing the old coach shocked made the moment even sweeter.

"Coach," Hayato said with a smirk, "don't forget to come to Karasuno's Spring High prelims."

"Haha, you rascal. Of course I'll be there."

The next few days passed in a blur of intense training. At last, Friday arrived—the final day before summer vacation.

"Finally, vacation!"

The classroom erupted in cheers the moment the teacher dismissed them. Hinata was practically bouncing with excitement.

"Remember to stay safe over break—and don't forget your summer homework!" the teacher called as they exited.

Students buzzed as they packed up and made plans.

"Hayato! Training camp starts tonight! Aren't you hyped?" Tanaka leaned in dramatically, eyes sparkling.

"Don't come so close. You're radiating heat," Hayato replied flatly. "Also, you haven't even packed yet."

"Geez, so cold. Where's that passion you show on the court?" Tanaka muttered, haphazardly stuffing his desk's contents into his bag.

"It's hot," Hayato said simply, slinging his backpack over his shoulder. "Haven't you noticed? It's been getting worse."

"Huh? Really? Didn't notice."

As they headed for the changing room, the whole team was buzzing with energy. Daichi had to step in and remind everyone that the summer training camp was tomorrow—and to stay focused.

Since they'd be traveling through the night, Coach Ukai kept today's training light. No point exhausting them before a long bus ride.

The camp would be held at Morisen High School in Saitama. Apparently, the weather there was cooler—a blessing, since Hayato was visibly wilting in the rising heat.

"Could this be summer fatigue?" he wondered, zoning out as he packed.

Later, while sorting his gear, Hayato received a message from Kiyoko, checking in on his packing progress. They chatted for half an hour—plenty of time before departure.

"Clothes, toiletries, charger… mosquito repellent," he muttered, checking off items as he went.

Once everything was packed, Hayato headed to dinner. When night finally fell, the team regrouped at school.

Mr. Takeda gave a quick send-off speech. They'd arrive by morning, just like the last trip.

Hinata, who missed the previous overnight departure, was buzzing with excitement.

"Departing in the middle of the night is so cool!"

"Well, you and Kageyama missed it last time," Tanaka said, arms crossed.

Nearby, Tsukishima rolled his eyes.

"It must be nice being a single-celled organism. You guys can sleep anywhere."

"What did you say?!"

Hinata and Kageyama snapped in unison.
