Greatest Legacy of the Magus Universe

Chapter 1198: Unchecked Hubris

Feypore welcomed its golden age five hundred years after the great capital was established.

It became the greatest civilization the planet had ever seen. Grand arcane academies were established, teaching every School of Magi and even exploring the three great professions of herbalism, artificing, and runesmithing.

In those days, Artificers created constructs and artifacts that remained unmatched even in the current age. The great empire developed advanced infrastructure such as teleportation gates between provinces, aqueducts powered by elementals, energy harvested by nature, and skyships that could travel around the world.

Cultural unity flourished greatly when the four great races came together. Humans learned nature-related rituals from the elves, dwarves adopted magical metallurgy, and gnomes took the study of illusions to great heights. The Magi came together and invented hybrid spells, combining racial traditions.

One thousand years after the four races had united against the banner of Feypore, the civilization had reached its peak in size, stretching to every corner of Tron.

Its influence spread even into the spirit world, with binding contracts forged between the Magi of Feypore and the hidden entities of the world beyond their own.

Gradually, the Magi grew overconfident. As if forming contracts with unknown entities of the spirit world wasn't bad enough, the upper echelons of Feypore had even begun experimenting with fate through the School of Divination.

Moreover, they even dabbled in the cycle of soul reincarnations, believing they could perfect existence itself and find immortality. Several great artifacts relating to these esoteric fields were crafted at the time and eventually lost or destroyed.

But the laws of the universe are fair. Every boon demands a price.

About five thousand and five hundred years ago, cracks started to emerge in the once-glorious civilization of Feypore.

Arrogance and corruption had crept into the ruling council of Magi. Over time, factions emerged, each hoarding secrets and competing for arcane dominance. Rebellions broke out in the far reaches of the empire, fueled by resentment of Feypore's strict magical oversight.

Catastrophic magical accidents began to occur. The Magi's hubris grew unchecked, leading them to dabble in forbidden magic and to reach out to unknown hidden entities of the spirit world for greater power, things that should have never been disturbed.

The lands were scarred by mana storms, magical beasts twisted into abominations, and a few provinces of the empire were outright destroyed by failed arcane experiments.

Centuries later, the collapse of Feypore had begun.

Civil wars between Magi factions escalated into conflicts that spanned continents. Feypore's experiments with the spirit world destabilized parts of the material world, tearing open rifts and portals to hostile worlds.

From these breaches in reality came the orcs, the goblins, the trolls, and other monstrous humanoids, spreading chaos across the lands. This was the final straw that sealed their fate.

At last, a series of apocalyptic battles shattered the empire's cities in Mabi. The capital of Feypore, too, was destroyed. The civil war lasted for centuries and came to an end about five thousand years ago.

But by then, Feypore had ceased to exist. The great civilization had fractured, splintering into scattered kingdoms, warlords, tribes, and small communities… just as it had been before Feypore's rise.

History, it seemed, had a strange way of repeating itself.

Standing before the mural he had first seen upon arriving, Adam's charred face showed a look of utter surprise, and he couldn't help but let out a drawn-out curse:

"Dragonshit…"

Many questions popped up inside his broken mind. "So that's how the goblins, orcs, and the other bastards came to be. I always wondered if the first Magi brought them to Tron when they initially arrived, but it seemed that was not the case at all…"

The material world, which was the universe itself, had countless planets and diverse species. Just as Myrrandor was the cradle of humankind, there was a planet for the elves, another where the dwarves were born, and so on and so forth. Naturally, there were also worlds ruled by orcs, goblins, trolls, etc.

That is why Magi had to be extremely cautious while dealing with the spirit world. Getting lost in the mystical dimension was dangerous enough, but experimenting carelessly could be even worse.

One simple mistake could lead to a rift being torn open in the fabric of reality, leading to distant planets in the material world. That was how the orcs, goblins, trolls, and other humanoid monsters managed to arrive on Tron.

The spirit world, after all, was like an ethereal blanket draped over the material world. It was the plane Magi used for teleportation. As such, a rift connecting two planets in the material world was not entirely out of the equation if an experiment with the spirit world went awry. And that was exactly what happened on Tron.

"Those stupid bastards," Adam remarked, shaking his head in disdain. "This is the basic rule of summoning magic. How could they be so careless? Even I wasn't this foolish as a child. Could they have really grown so arrogant as to ignore basic safety precautions? Pathetic!"

His lisp curled into a grin as he listened to the whispers of the Laughing God. Drowning the mad ravings with great difficulty, Adam scanned his surroundings once more.

After making sure the area was safe, he sat on the rubble, staring thoughtfully at the large mural before him. Although much of it was faded or broken, it still helped him gain a better understanding of the history of Feypore.

But there was one thing that stood out, something that the murals hinted at, yet never fully revealed.

"There's no mention of the Greater Universe," said the white-robed Adam, who stood beside the real Adam, arms crossed as he studied the mural before them.

Adam nodded absetmindedly. "Exactly…"

He thought for a few moments, then added, "Maybe this place used to be accessible to the general public at one point in time, so they never mentioned the existence of other worlds beyond our own?"

The white-robed Adam shrugged. "Ah, conjectures, conjectures…"

"And there's another thing," Adam said after a brief pause. "The mural begins with the fracturing of the first great civilizations. If this is what I think it is, then…"

The white-robed Adam completed the words for him:

"Then the Magi of these first great civilizations must have been the ones who came from the Greater Universe."

"Indeed." Adam nodded with a solemn look on his charred face. "Now we just need to confirm the exact timeline of their arrival. Then, hopefully, I can learn something about the place they came from, and the place I will one day go… Myrrandor!"
