chapter 65
As evening falls, Yang Yi takes stock of the day's catch.
[Eyeball Fruits: 15, Long-legged Sardines: 9, Red-lipped Eel: 1, Cystic Pufferfish: 3]. The net also snagged three [Hand Starfish] and a one-armed crab.
Not bad at all, he nods. The Eyeball Fruits were his main goal today.
He tosses the less appetizing fish into the lab for Suna and grabs some stone and wood from the hold. Time to play with fire. He builds a small firepit in the ship's central courtyard, stuffing it with the leftover Fire-Velvet Spider fluff. It's not enough to make more sweaters, but dry fluff is dry fluff, and it's perfect kindling.
With a scrape of the [Searing Sea Serpent's Tooth] against his new flint, sparks fly, and the fluff catches immediately. A rare flicker of excitement crosses Yang Yi's face.
"So this is survival," he mutters, feeding thin strips of wood into the nascent flame. "You really do need fire."
Five minutes later, a stable, crackling campfire warms the deck of the Nyxstar. The Arm Bone plating makes the whole operation perfectly safe.
Now, how to hang these eyeballs…
As if reading his mind, several bony arms sprout from the deck, palms open, ready to assist.
"The hell?" Yang Yi is momentarily stunned, but their intent is clear. He hands over the Eyeball Fruits, and the skeletal hands carefully hold them up to be smoked by the fire.
You've gotta be kidding me.
Pretty damn useful, actually. He munches on a perfectly roasted sardine and sends Suna a message.
"Suna, the skeletal arms on the deck are controllable. They'll help if you need anything. Try it!"
"Knew that this morning," she replies.
"What? And you didn't tell me?"
"I thought it was a permission you granted me."
"Er…" Yang Yi is speechless. He grabs two more roasted fish and heads for the lab, finding Suna already in the midst of her work. Bony arms act as her assistants, fetching tools and—he has to do a double-take—several arms are holding test tubes and spinning them at high speeds.
"Is that a… makeshift centrifuge?"
Her ingenuity is both terrifying and impressive. "Here," he says, handing her the fish. "I salted them. Not bad." She takes them, has a small bite, and then demolishes both in seconds.
"You have fire now?" she asks.
"Yeah. Got a flint. Made a campfire in the courtyard."
"Good." She strokes her chin thoughtfully. "With fire, I can start concentrating the potions…"
But it's late. He's really here to tell her to get some sleep. Before he leaves, though, he notices a large glass tank in the lab. Inside, a dozen or so baby Fire-Velvet Spiders are crawling over dead fish.
"You're raising spiders?"
"Mm. Low survival rate. Only a dozen hatched from dozens of eggs."
"What for?" he asks, frowning. They aren't cute, and they aren't tasty.
"Don't you think the lab is missing some test subjects?" Suna replies casually.
"Right." Yang Yi offers a few seconds of silent prayer for the newborn spiders and leaves.
Three days later, the Nyxstar is a day away from the Extreme Winter Sea. A morning chill wakes Yang Yi with a jolt. The first thing he does is grab his left shoulder, then lets out a huge sigh of relief. He'd had a nightmare. In the dream, a second head had sprouted from his shoulder, and it wasn't his own face. It was horrifying.
He's soaked in a cold sweat. His room is a bit drafty, and the sea breeze is cutting right through him. He pulls on a Fire-Velvet Sweater and tries to recall the face from his dream. After a few seconds, it comes to him, and it's even more terrifying. It was a woman's face. Vague, but definitely a woman. A beautiful one, at that. With… eyes the color of fresh blood.
A shudder runs through him.
[A sudden chill runs down your spine. Reason -10.]
Did I just… fuse with Suna? Did we become some two-headed demon?
He slaps himself, forcing the thought away. He's starting to understand these nightmares. They're omens of danger. This dream didn't involve his death, which means the threat isn't lethal. Still, just to be safe, he decides to give the witch's lab a wide berth for a while. After calming down, he gets dressed and steps out onto the deck. ✧ NоvеIight ✧ (Original source) The air is cold.
A chill is in the air. You'll need an extra layer.
