Chapter 128: The Lockwards, a different Castle
"Go ahead. You're going to ask anyway, even if I don't let you, right?" she said.
"Haha, okay. Mark Neville seems to have been pressured into telling everything, just because you're here," he said.
She smiled. "Do you want to know about the Castles? Why do we have so much influence?"
He nodded. That was exactly what he wanted to know.
"Okay." She leaned back in her chair. "There are many things that outsiders shouldn't know, but there are others that everyone should know." She glanced at him as she spoke.
"The Castles aren't as divided as you think they are. You see us fighting over resources and battling each other to see who will rise above. Who will be the next Habsburg among us?"
"But, deep down, all this is nothing more than sibling rivalry," she said.
"Siblings?" He looked at her, confused. What did she mean?
"Yes. Although we don't share the same blood, we are all close allies. In fact, have you ever heard of the Table of Rulers?"
He shook his head. He had no idea about it.
"The Table of Rulers is actually a Clan. The Ruling Clan, to which all Castles belong."
"That means..." He opened his eyes in shock, and she nodded.
"Yes. We are allies. But only to face the enemies of the Empire. We fight internally among ourselves, but if any threat ever befalls the Empire, we will unite. Just as we did the night your family was destroyed."
"There was a whole discussion, and we accused each other. We killed traitors and destroyed several families for selling them information. But, sadly, the damage was already done. The Habsburgs no longer existed. They weakened us to such an extent that it brought us closer together. That's why outsiders and insiders alike don't dare to contradict us right now."
"I understand. It's a strange brotherhood, but since you mention it, who were the ones who destroyed my family? From the way you say it, you seem to know."
She remained silent at this question and simply shrugged her shoulders.
"I can't answer that. If you ever reach the highest heights of the empire, you may have the opportunity to find out," she said.
"Maybe? If I became the strongest in the empire, would it still be a maybe?" he asked.
And she nodded, staring at him. "Yes."
"Tsk, how troublesome." He sighed, but decided to move on to the main topic. "Are the Lockwards also like you say? Do they belong to the same Table?" He asked.
She stared at him for several seconds before shaking her head. "You're interested in the Lockwards, aren't you? You asked me about them earlier too."
"It's normal to be interested in them. Don't you think?"
"Haha." She laughed. "I guess you're right. The blood of the Gods, huh." She shook her head again.
"No. They don't belong to the Table."
"Why?"
"Because they were the ones who created the Table."
"If they created it, then how can they not belong?"
"I don't know. Go and ask them." She scoffed. "All I know is that they were the ones who brought us together. Without them, all the Castles wouldn't be so close-knit. We'd probably be like any other empire or kingdom nearby. We'd be divided between interests, and the church would already rule us. So... well, they created it but don't belong because they don't care what happens here. Their roots aren't even here, so it makes sense."
Louis finally smiled. This opened up many questions in his mind about the Lockwards.
They were a clan that ruled the world, and wherever they were, they would be at the top of the pyramid. But they don't care about money.
He still wonders how on earth it is possible that they could so easily discard an SSS-Rank Class?
Yes, it was a mundane name. Perhaps if it were "God of Wealth," it wouldn't be so mundane—or something that alluded to that—but no, it had to be "God of Money."
Okay, he understood all that. But was it mundane and ugly enough to dismiss him?
He was a god, for God's sake!
However, if he thought about it carefully, he could see a certain logic in it. Each god owed their power to their Class.
His father, the God of Thunder, had thunder magic, and all his power was based on those powerful spells.
His mother, the Goddess of Birds, is basically a bird tamer. She also has the power to cast spells that birds can cast, so she is known as one of the most lethal goddesses due to her immense number of spells.
The power of all these gods is based on the name of their class.
But what about him?
God of Money.
What power does money have, exactly? In an environment where the Power System has nothing to gain from it, it is useless.
His Class does not help him in any way to understand the Power System of this world. It does not help him in any way to understand the Arcane Flow, the Arkanometric Fabrics... nothing.
It simply makes him the God of Money.
Furthermore, since childhood, Louis has not shown a strong talent for what he was taught. Although some of his memories remain fragmented, Louis is certain that his talent for everything was very low as a child.
That's why it makes perfect sense that he was expelled.
But even so, he still wonders... Do they really not need the money? Is his Class really that useless?
Rebecca saw him looking so thoughtful that she smiled.
"You have a history with the Lockwards, don't you? I can see in your face that what you want to know most is about them."
Louis sighed. "Yes. I have a small... but intense history with them."
Her eyes sparkled. "That's amazing. Having a history with the rulers of this and many worlds is something to be proud of, unless it's a bad one, of course."
After saying that, she felt ready to give him more information, so she didn't let him speak.
"The strength of the Castles is specified by their history. We have been bankers all our lives. Our history lies in that legendary man, the Great Myer of the Mines. Before the creation of the Empire, he had all the mines of the Empire under his name. He was rich and powerful. He was also the first to set up businesses in the Red Sun Tower and extract its resources."
"He founded banks throughout the Empire and brought the golden age of money to this place. That's where the Priestleys began."
"The Evergreens began with the legendary Mage Charles. That man was so powerful that he is the most famous wizard the Empire has ever had. It is said that he was a god and left behind many grimoires. I'm sure you've heard of him."
"In the North, most of their beginnings are on the distant northern continent. In fact, one of the castles is descended from the giants of the north. Surely you saw one of the Northern Castles facing off against Evergreen in that race, right? That's them. Don't be fooled by their small size; many use magic to appear smaller than they are."
"The Royal Castle originates within the Church and the Society of Magicians. They are powerful magicians, too, but they don't have as much repertoire as Evergreen."
"The Habsburgs... along with the Priestleys and the Evergreens, they ruled these lands initially. Habsburg was brute force. Evergreen was magical force. Priestley was wealth."
"We all have something in common, and that is that we have a lot of wealth. They can't match us in wealth, but they all have hundreds of billions of Jens or more in riches."
"Thanks to that, our Empire was able to prosper."
"But at the heart of the matter, a curious family appeared. They despise money, they look down on it. They consider money to be useless, simply something created to control the population."
"In part, they are right. But can they really live without depending on money? What do they do? How do they support themselves, then?"
"Even though we are rich and have many resources, they don't really need us. We exist to drive the economy and keep the population satisfied with their own needs. But they don't really need us, and they have proven this over the years."
"For many years, the Church, the Society of Magicians, and all the world's powers have been asking themselves: Why is this so?"
"I believe the answer is simpler, but more complex than it seems. They are self-sufficient. They are self-sustaining. This is why they have been able to rule the world for hundreds of thousands of years, establishing the most powerful mandate."
"That is why it is believed that the only way to bring down a family like this is to do it from within. Something must break inside for it to fall."
"And the answer to all this. The answer to why they are independent is terrifying."
"Their blood is so powerful that the minimum rank they can receive in their classes is Rank S. Can you imagine that? Minimum: Rank S. Just for being born there." She looked at him, finally thinking about letting him speak.
"What would you think of a family with that ability, Louis?"
"What would I think?" He frowned. "I can only think that they're ridiculously strong, right?"
She smiled. "Remember this and think about it again: Classes are born to control the Arcane Flow, and the Arcane Flow is EVERYWHERE in this world and can affect everything. Everything and everyone. Think about it again," she said.
