Goblin Teeth: A Monster Party LitRPG

158 - Klaw: Endless Stamina

"Dawn is nearly upon us," Koaork said. "Shall we go over the ritual once again?"

"Yeah," Klaw said, "Better safe than sorry."

It was the next day, and the party had gathered at the orc camp. They were to undergo an orcish ritual called the Struggle. Elyndris had taken perch on Anath, who stood nervously. Hunter gripped his torch nearby as well. Zuss stood some distance away. Her cat, Birdy, sat at her side. Daggat, however, was lounging in the shade.

Among those standing in the makeshift arena was an orc. Klaw didn't remember his name, only that he was level five. A runt, barely an orc at all.

"Here is how it goes down." Koaork began, "You fight until you get too tired, then we orcs will force you to keep it up. No killing, use sticks. You fall down, we start kicking until you get up. You fall unconscious, then you fail."

"How long do we get to rest between fights?" Anath asked.

"You don't. Anything more than a minute or two and you fail. This time of year, we're going for about twelve hours. Got it?"

Klaw nodded, "Easy." He focused on Daggat, "Hey, Dag. Get over here."

Daggat waved a hand, "Hmm? No thanks. I'm fine watching. Besides, I want to dig into the artifice book."

"Like hell you are," Klaw grumbled, "Your wimpy ass could use all the constitution it needs. Same with you, Zuss."

"I'm good." She said.

Klaw began to growl. Why was he the only one who took these things seriously?

"Klaw." A voice in his head said, "Zuss and Daggat are withdrawing from the ritual as a precaution. We cannot trust the orcs, and they want to step in if they need to."

Internally, Klaw admitted that it was a smart move. But those two had the lowest constitution. If anyone needed the boost, it was them. Daggat, especially, since Zuss was a bitch to hit.

Nearby, an orc was mixing a large pot of a dark black liquid. She began to pour them into bowls.

"What's with the drink?" Klaw asked.

"Traditional. Take a big drink, then begin. Since there are three of you-" He paused, "Four… three bodies, we'll have an orc step in. Me."

An orc dropped a bundle of sticks on the ground.

"Pick your weapons," Koarok said, picking up a large branch.

Anath grabbed four sticks. Hunter swung his torch. Klaw grabbed the largest branch in the pile. He was going to have to hold back. It wasn't likely that there were any orcs as strong as him.

The orc with the bowls approached the group and handed them out. "Drink… drink," she said with a grin, "When you get tired, I will give you more."

Klaw snagged the bowl from her, "Let's get started." Then he drank down the brew. It was deeply bitter and foul, and it left his mouth tight and dry. "Eugh, what is this?"

"A strong tea to give you energy." She said, giggling.

A sharp pain in the back of his leg caused Klaw to spin around. Anath stood behind him, sticks pointed towards him.

She grinned at him, "What's wrong? Weren't you ready?"

"Oh, you b-" Not even Klaw could bring himself to curse Anath, "Fine, let's go."

Klaw and Anath began to battle. Hunter and the orc fought, both a bit more awkwardly than the two practiced warriors. Well, somewhat practiced.

The goal here wasn't to win; it was to not stop fighting. Pulling your punches was allowed and encouraged. So, the sticks did not shatter as Anath blocked or Klaw countered. Still, he had more reach and was starting to gain ground. Anath couldn't use her legs offensively, for fear she would cause real damage.

Finally, she overstepped, opening herself up for a proper attack. It was time to get revenge for the sneak attack earlier. Just as he began to swing, a crystal pillar rose from the ground. Klaw rolled away, only being disoriented.

"Remember, you face two," Elyndris said in his head.

Klaw grinned, "Oh, right. So it IS a fair fight."

The fight continued. This time, Elyndris cast relatively harmless spells. Focusing on pushing and moving Klaw using force and crystals.

Minutes passed, then half an hour. Klaw noticed an almost buzzing energy that put an edge to his mind. Made him sharp, but jittery. The drink, for sure.

After an hour, he was starting to feel heavy. Eleven more to go. Anath seemed to tire as well, but not to the degree that she had to stop. Klaw took a risk and glanced at Hunter. He wasn't looking so hot. Not tired, but distressed. His opponent did look exhausted and had numerous burns on his body.

"One moment," Klaw said to Anath. Then he dashed away to the orc. Klaw grabbed him around the waist, "Let's swap dance partners, yeah?" Then he hurled the orc directly at Anath.

"What?" Hunter said, confused.

Klaw punched him, lightly, in the gut, "Keep fighting. How are you holding up?"

Hunter swung his torch, "I can… keep going."

Klaw ducked and shouldered Hunter, who stumbled back, "I mean, emotionally. You look like you're about to cry."

Anger flashed over his face, "I am not." Then he clipped Klaw with his swing.

"Just tell me what's going through your head," Klaw said as he recovered.

"It's just… I don't like fighting."

"This isn't a real fight. It's training."

"I know, that's not what I mean. I am cursed. Ogres are all cursed. If I get too upset… I might go feral."

"So that's why you're holding back? Not putting your heart into it?"

"Yeah. I think I should stop, before I get too tired to stay calm."

"That's incredibly…" Klaw ducked a swing, then hefted his own weapon, "STUPID!" Klaw shattered the stick on Hunter's back.

Hunter yelled in pain, then swung wildly in his direction, "Are you trying to make me go feral?"

"No, Hunter. You're just looking at it wrong. You are worried that you'll get too upset or scared, right?"

"I am worried that I will use the Dance of Flame and Wind to burn everything to the ground if I go feral."

"In a fight? That's an easy fix. You don't want to go feral because you hate fighting. It upsets you. There is an obvious solution."

Hunter slammed down with his torch, and Klaw blocked it with a well-timed arm blade, "I don't need fixing! Why can't I just hate fighting?"

"Because, idiot, you ARE going to fight. With us or alone, or with a family. Doesn't matter. This world will push you until you go feral."

"So, what, I can't avoid it?"

"All you have to do is LOVE the fight." Klaw sheathed his blades, leaped in the air, and punched Hunter in the face.

"What?" He said, rubbing his jaw.

"Look at Anath. She was scared of battle, too, for a bit. But she decided to enjoy it. Now she is more comfortable with herself. I love fighting, and I am the strongest of us."

Hunter growled, "You want me to like HURTING people?" He kicked Klaw, who grabbed his foot.

"NO!" Klaw lifted Hunter's leg and threw him to the ground, "Love the FIGHT. The challenge. The feeling of being better than someone."

"But people would still get hurt," Hunter said, sadly, as he crawled to his feet.

"Can't avoid that. But that's why you're here. To heal people who get hurt. So… loosen up. Have fun. Otherwise, this world will tear you apart from the inside. Don't let it."

Hunter laughed, then hefted his torch, "Alright… but it will take a while to learn. If your hair burns away… I can't fix that."

Klaw smiled fully, then the two began to fight.

By the second hour, all of the fighters were aching. The one suffering the most was the orc, so Hunter took a moment to heal him for six hours. This opened Klaw to fight Anath again.

"How… you doing?" Klaw asked with labored breathes.

"Everything huuuuurts." She said while half heartedly swinging the sticks.

"Another hour and Hunter will heal you," Klaw said while punching wildly.

A hand grabbed the back of Klaws' head and wrenched it back; he was too tired and surprised to fight it. Hot tea was shoved down his throat, and he sputtered and coughed. The female orc moved to each fighter and did the same.

For another half hour, Anath and Klaw, and the occasional spell from Elyndris, wore each other down further.

"Alright," Koarok finally called. "They are falling. Fresh fighters, step in. Keep them moving!"

"Oh." Daggat said, coming to his feet, "Allow me."

Klaw turned to face Daggat, who was approaching him with his spear in hand.

"Oh… good." Klaw said, "I'm still pissed at you."

Klaw activated Burst of Strength to counter his exhaustion, then lunged at Daggat. He drew his claws as he attacked, the first set being blocked by Daggat's spear, but his second attack sliced Daggat in the face.

Lines of blood appeared, then almost immediately began to close, "What the fuck, Klaw?!"

"I said I was pissed, and you can heal. Hope you got that pain resistance back."

Klaw continued his assault. With Daggat's tactile telekenisis, the two were at similar strength normally. But for the next minute, Klaw was much stronger, and with Daggat's ring, his spear could handle the pressure. So, even while tired, Klaw let loose.

Daggat didn't want to harm Klaw, but he sustained several cuts and gouges, all healing back incredibly quickly.

"I hope that regeneration was worth it," Klaw growled, slicing into Daggat's shoulder.

"Would you relax!" Daggat said, knocking Klaw on the side of his head with the butt of his spear. "We already did the you punching me thing."

"Not enough. You've got to hurt for how much you put us through. For a moment, we thought you were dead. Anath didn't stop shaking for almost an hour afterwards."

"Well, I didn't die-" Klaw drove his claws into Daggat's stomach, "FUCK, okay, I'm sorry."

"Yeah? Sorry? Right after that, you just had to flaunt your ego. Made Hunter fight in a duel he didn't want to be a part of."

"It was good for him; besides, he won."

"Shut up and let me vent! You keep pulling us one way and another." Klaw dodged the spear, but took a telekinetically thrown stone to the face, "Oh, let's go to town! Oh no, now we've got to help these humans instead. Then a stealth mission, which you forgot about! Now with the orcs, we were going to assault Rika. But, oh… guess you changed your mind again and we are going alone anyway!" Klaw managed a solid slash against Daggat's chest, "MAKE UP YOUR FUCKING MIND!"

Daggat panted and put some distance between them, "Just… gah, what do you want from me? Huh? Last year, we were struggling to stay alive. Running from danger to danger in the woods. I don't know what I am doing, do you?"

"I keep steady, I know what I need to do. Get stronger. You lead too erratically."

Daggat rammed his spear into Klaws' gut, "Because my mind is erratic! I am just trying to keep up. We learn something new, and our plan changes. That's how learning works. I didn't know we would have orcs on our side until we did. I didn't know Rika was vulnerable until Hrodebert told us. I am only guessing where to go next."

Klaw finally recovered his breath, "Well… guess better! Or stick to your fucking plan. It is getting annoying."

"Fine, I'll-" Klaw punched Daggat in the face again, knocking him to the ground. Daggat groaned. "Got it all out of your system?"

"Yeah. Think so. We should fight more often." Klaw kicked him in the ribs, gently. "You should go let Hunter or Anath fight you, too. Really cathartic."

Daggat stood, "I have been. Look."

Klaw turned and saw the other three warriors fighting floating spears. He turned back, "Fuck, you were holding back, weren't you?"

"So were you; you could have ripped out my heart. Can't heal that."

After some time, Daggat grew tired, and a group of orcs cut in. The next few hours were grueling. Every attack was painful, and his limbs felt like they weighed a hundred pounds. Maybe his build wasn't that smart. He wanted to counteract his relatively low constitution with physical defenses. Manually adjusting his blood flow and splitting his organs made up for at least ten points.

Hunter healed whoever was the most tired every hour. When he got to Klaw, it was like a bucket of cold water was thrown over him. His fatigue was still there, but his body recovered, and he didn't hurt as much. He then realized that with Hunter, Klaw could work out till his arms stopped working, then let Hunter recover him right away. That would speed up his weight training.

Soon, the orcs rotated out, then again. By the sixth hour, Klaw wasn't able to think straight. He abandoned technique and merely swung his fists.

By hour eight, he could hardly fight. All he could do was defend against the orcs beating him with sticks. How did a normal orc keep up with this? It seemed impossible. Yet, the young orc did.

At the ninth hour, Klaw suddenly found himself being summoned by his aura of defense. He allowed it to take him, appearing in front of an orc and blocking an overhead swing.

Glancing behind him, Klaw saw that the young orc was now wavering on his feet. Rage pulled the last bit of stamina from deep within Klaw's iron bones.

"You almost killed him!" He roared, then lashed out with his claws. He cut deep into the orc, not quite killing. "Idiot orcs!"

He was in a daze, furious now. He lashed out with blades at any orc that came near. He saw movement and lashed out. Because he was in a contest where he must fight continuously, his attacks were not dishonorable. Still, the orcs kept their distance.

His claws scraped against Anath's spider legs.

"Klaw, stop it. You will get someone killed." Elyndris said in his mind.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Klaw lashed out again, but his limbs were so heavy. He almost fell to the floor, "Bastards tried to kill him."

"It was… an accident," Anath said. Klaw noticed she was using two spider legs to stay standing.

There was a thump as the orc fell, unconscious. He had failed, not able to keep up.

"Terth has fallen," called Koarok, "He will have to try again next year."

More of the black tea was shoved down their throats, and the fights continued. Everything was a blur to Klaw near the end. The last three hours were almost like he was in a trance. Simply reacting to movement and lashing out with gremlin-level strength.

The last hour was the worst. The sun was beginning to go down. He was hungrier than he'd ever been, thirstier too. So tired, only one eye could be open at a time. Yet, he received no notification.

Did he start too late? Did he stop fighting too long? Was it because he pulled punches? Was it not truly sundown? Perhaps the orcs had lied, and this was just a cruel joke.

He could see the same conflict on Anath's and Hunter's faces. The fear and desperation. Anath had long since run out of tears; she had sobbed for a while when she was too tired to fight well.

Then, with no warning,

[Feat achieved: Endless Stamina. Cause: Battle from sunup to sundown with no rest. Reward: Constitution boost.]

He dropped to the ground, as did the others. His body screamed in pain, and everything was sore. Tonight, he would sleep by Hunter's fire for sure.

All of that, for only a plus two to constitution. He would have laughed, but even that was too much effort.
