156 - Daggat: Murder Council



Daggat spent most of the next day speaking with Koarok, discussing battle plans and ideas, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of their people. In a word, they were dangerous. Their war-like nature seemed to invade every aspect of their lives. From how they slept, ate, and spent their time.

The next day, they would meet with everyone to solidify their plans, but for now, Daggat headed back to the manor.

While he traveled, he considered his tactics skill. He had a free point that could be spent on a tactics divine skill, allowing him to then increase it to the next level with study and practice.

As usual, there were three. Project Battlemap allowed him to project an image of a battlefield he had seen. Useful for planning and sharing plans. Battle Assessment would tell him who was winning a battle he was witnessing. Useless, he could simply watch. The last was Place Banner. It allowed him to place illusory banners where he could see, and only his allies could see them. Handy, but not so useful in the current situation.

He chose Project Battlemap.

Back at the manor, Daggat found the new goblins sitting around the table devouring the last of their giant meat. It was about time to go hunting again. He had an idea for that. A stupid idea, which is how he knew it was a good one.

"How did you get them to sit at a table?" Daggat asked Hunter, who was in his seat.

The goblins noticed him and frantically wiped their mouths. Glibby dashed over.

"Big ogre told us to eat at the table. Glibby made sure everyone listened!"

"Ah, very good. Well done. Has he shown you where you are staying?"

"Yes! Glibby rooms with Lulu, Bebe, and Olly."

"Don't get too comfortable," Daggat said. Glibby's ears sank. "Those rooms are temporary. We've got something even better. Finish up your food, then I'll show you."

The goblins practically inhaled the rest of their meals.

Daggat led them out of the manor and to the ruins beyond. Surrounding Titanfell Manor was a small town, one that was in the process of being expanded before the demon appeared. These buildings were made of the same material that Titanfell was made of, so they mostly still stood. They were just a tad… overgrown. A bit moldy in bits, too.

"Alright, gobs. Behold," Daggat said, sweeping his arm over the ruined townscape. "My home is called Titanfell Manor, and this town was once known as Titanfell. Tonight, I will tell you how I came to conquer it." The goblins listened with rapt attention. "After slaying my previous boss, I needed to find a home. A place to recover and build my strength. Using my mighty intellect, I discovered a manor, abandoned for decades. This manor, Titanfell manor, was to be the seat of power for a new town, a new city."

"Did you kill the humans?" One of the bugbears asked.

"Ah, see, the humans were already dead. Slain by a demon or turned into undead! But you have nothing to fear. I slew the demon and have befriended the dead. That's Alfred, by the way, nice chap. Do what he says if you are at the manor."

Glibby raised a hand, "The towns we scavenged had walls. This one has no walls."

"Not yet, we haven't built them yet."

"Do we have to… build walls?" Olly asked. A flash of fear rippled through the goblins.

"Not if you don't want to. I am not going to enslave you, but I will offer you work. Behold, this town. It is overgrown and reclaimed by nature. What I want you to do is pick your new homes. Houses, plenty to pick from. Come to me and show me. Then it is your responsibility to clear the house and clear the lot." Another goblin raised its hand, "Yes?"

"Why?"

Daggat grinned, "Look, I grew up as a gremlin too, I know what it means to be a goblin. We sleep where we want, eat what we want, and have fun how we want. But, see, these houses are more than just places to sleep. They are potential."

The goblins muttered in confusion as Daggat led them to one.

"See, consider. With this home, you can do anything you wish with the land. Plant a garden and grow food, learn to make leather and convert it into a workshop, learn to pickle and pickle your neighbors' food for them. Maybe tame a monster and milk it for magical milk. The possibilities are endless!"

Glibby nodded, "Glibby likes this. We can rule tiny clans of our own!"

"Exactly!" Daggat said, "Your own little empires. You are young, and so is our society. As time goes on, we will all learn to better live together. For now, I want you to start clearing away brush and debris."

Given a clear task, the goblins seemed more excited.

"But… and this is important," Daggat said, allowing his voice to become dark and sinister. "Should any of you harm a tree… even so far as cutting its roots, I will feed you to Elyndris. Do you understand? No harming trees, even if they have grown into the village. Leave them be." They nodded in understanding and fear. "Well, then. Be off, pick your homes."

They scattered like chickens seeking feed. Goblin nature was to stick together, so in the end, the group only picked five houses among the sixteen of them. Daggat had read all about maintaining a village house and how one can specialize their life skills to better the community. In the coming years, assuming they survived, Daggat would teach this to them, and all who came to Titanfell.

That night, the party dreamed once again. Daggat taught Anath some tricks in acrobatics, not that he knew much, of course. Klaw, Hunter, and Elyndris fought. Zuss spent her time with Birdy, who was added to the curse.

The next day, Daggat received word of Kettle's arrival. He had apparently shot at an orc and was now holding a reinforced position.

Daggat approached the cave, which Kettle had retreated to. "Kettle, it's me. You can come out." Daggat called with his enhanced voice.

"Me who?!"

"Daggat, you moronic dwarf. The orcs are on our side. Get out of your hole." He had dismantled a wagon to build defenses.

Pote poked his head over a plank, "Oh, hi, Daggat. You look different."

"Yup. Evolved. C'mon, you are just in time for the meeting."

Some time later, Daggat had returned to the manor. The dwarves were resting and drinking. Relaxing from their journey. Daggat placed a hand on the tree in the center of his home.

"Hrodebert, got a minute?"

A few moments later, the tree rippled and opened. Hrodebert stepped through.

"Hello, Daggat. I… am sorry for losing my temper before. I thought about it, and it wasn't fair. Sorry for killing your tree."

"Ah, don't sweat it, big guy. That tree was a dick anyway."

"Would you like to travel?"

"No, actually. I have some friends coming by for an important meeting. You need to be there."

"I'm not good with people."

"Don't worry, you just need to listen. Come on."

An hour later, Daggat sat in his new throne in the great hall. It was light enough that Pote could carry it in his inventory, so it was very easy to install. The very same chair Leofric sat on when he first met the man. He puffed some of Thrymjas' tobacco from his new pipe. It was made of white antler and dark wood, shaped like the stump of a tree.

"Is this everyone?" He asked. At the table sat his party: Glibby, Hrodebert, Thrymja, Koarok, an orc woman named Tika, Ivory, Kettle, Pote, and a human who had traveled with the dwarves. The table was full, which was a pleasant sight to see.

"I believe so, Master." His assistant said.

"Good, good," Daggat murmured. Then he grinned for the group, "So, today we are gathered to discuss the murder of Rika."

"Kill Rika?" Glibby asked in awe.

"Not murder," Klaw said, "We'll have an army."

"Right, well. Whatever." Daggat said, then he upped his volume a tad. "Rika rules over the Head Taker goblins with a dismissive fist. She is cruel and uncaring. Under her command, the goblins have stripped this forest of its resources. Overhunting, the slaughtering and burning of villages, and the betrayal of her allies. Not to mention tearing down trees to build her walls. Humans are useless and are too caught up in their wars to do anything. This is our forest, so we must solve this issue."

"Humans are not useless," Grumbled the only human at the table.

"Ah, sorry, who were you again?" Daggat asked with a fake polite tone. The human had long, brown hair and sharp eyes. He did not have a warrior's body, but he held himself with confidence. Impressive, considering his company.

"My name is Reed. We fought together."

"I fought with many humans. A villager?"

"No. I was among those mind-controlled." He stood, "Daggat is right. Rika has done damage that will take generations to repair. Tore down societies and broke what little trust there was between man and monster."

"You are quick to take command," Daggat said. "Were you a chief? A king?"

"A tanner. But when our people found themselves without a leader, I stepped up. This is why I am here, to speak at this table."

"How many of you are there?"

"We once numbered thousands. A coalition of small allied villages, the same coalition Harrowpine was a member of. Now, we are thirty. But, I suspect there are more, hiding."

Daggat laughed, "A human hero who has taken control. Love it. When I said humans are useless, I meant the civilized ones. Those who are under the power of the throne."

"Yes," Reed said, "They are useless. Weak and unable to live in harmony with the forest as we do."

Hrodebert huffed, "Harmony… many of you slay trees to hide from rain."

"That reminds me," Daggat said, "Everyone, this is Hrodebert. He represents the trees. His presence here might be the most important."

"This is a more numerous collection of people than I'd expect," Thrymja said.

Daggat shrugged, "We get around. Now, behold." Daggat waved a hand and activated Project Battlefield. It allowed one to project an image of a battlefield that one has seen. In this case, the entire forest. Daggat had seen it, shown the breadth of the region by the titans. Small blue trees stretched across the table. It lacked detail, but that wasn't needed.

The rest of the council murmured in awe.

"Is this Elderveil?" Koarok asked, leaning forward.

"The forest, yes. In its entirety. We are here," Daggat had gathered the kingless pieces and moved the black king to their location. "Rika is here," he said as he moved the white queen near the center of the forest.

"This is our goal," Daggat said, "Rika has many goblins at her disposal. And they are, to her. Disposable, I mean. That means they fight hard and fast. So, we need to match those numbers if we are to attack."

"And what of Rika herself?" Thrymja said, "She is likely the most powerful creature in this forest."

"Goblin Teeth will take care of Rika," Klaw said.

"We have a score to settle," added Zuss.

"Rika is scary! Glibby saw her fight a horse."

Daggat growled, "If we are too afraid to fight her, then what do you all suggest? Hide in caves and behind trees until what? She goes away? No… we will slay her. Has she evolved yet? Last I knew, she was the same tier as us."

"She has the requirements. But as far as we know, she has not evolved." Tika said.

"Why not? Don't you monsters get stronger?" Kettle asked.

"She's gaming the system," Daggat said. "Saving it in case she needs to heal. She can still level up. What are the requirements?"

"There are three ways we know of." Tika said, "Be the strongest monster in your realm, in this case, Elderveil forest. These are called Alphas. You may slay an alpha to take its mantle. Or you can serve Sarhazuel in some great capacity."

"Oh, good to know," Daggat said.

"This will cause problems," Elyndris said to Daggat telepathically. "We will have to hunt."

"Still. We can take that mantle from her. Do not worry. But, here is the plan." Daggat considered each person in turn. "Reed, I like your spirit. If we find more human survivors, I want you to guide them. Gather them into a force. Will you?"

"To avenge my home, yes. But, how?"

"Hrodebert, will you ask the trees? If we slay Rika, she will no longer tear down your forest." Daggat said.

"I can try."

"There you go, we can work out the details later. Glibby."

"Yes!"

"I am putting you in charge of any dissenting goblins. All who have fled from Rika's army."

"You will accept cowards?" Koarok growled.

Daggat glared at him, "Yes, and we have. Don't forget you, too, fled from battle."

The orc sat back down, grumbling.

Daggat continued. "Ivory, your people can help?"

"They can be convinced." She said, "I may be the leader's daughter, but I have little pull."

"I can be quite charming. We can try. We also have connections with the Silver Wolf goblins. Koarok, can you gather other orc tribes to your cause?"

"If what you said was true, and Rika slew them, then we can accept their survivors."

"Hrodebert, orcs too, please. There are also the survivors of Harrowpine. Kettle, you think they will fight?"

"Many of them think they owe you, you will find bows."

"Great! So… let's discuss specifics. Time, I fear, might not be in our favor."
