Chapter 376: Chapter 376: Albedo? (2-in-1 Chapter)
"I'm just passing through, on my way to Dragonspine to find Albedo. And you are?"
Nolan asked casually after some thought.
"Oh, the Chief Alchemist."
Barbara nodded lightly. Albedo's name was quite well-known; practically everyone in Mondstadt had heard of him.
"I'm heading there to support the other sisters and priests from the Church, and Miss Rosaria is here to protect me in the snow mountain."
"Support? Did something happen?"
Nolan asked curiously as they walked.
"There was a major avalanche near the Entombed City Outskirts. Many adventurers got trapped, and a lot of people were injured.
"So, everyone from the Church of Favonius went to help treat the injured. But since we're short on hands, I asked Miss Rosaria to bring me here as soon as possible."
Barbara gave a simple explanation of the situation.
"I see."
Nolan nodded thoughtfully. After all, avalanches were a common occurrence in the snowy mountains.
He could only hope that not too many people were hurt.
After thinking for a moment, he said, "Since it's on the way, why don't I take you both there? Climbing the mountain isn't easy."
Rosaria, arms crossed with her elbows propped under her chest, glanced at Nolan but didn't say anything. Barbara, however, perked up with delight upon hearing the Honorary Knight's offer. She clenched her pale little fists and said excitedly:
"Really? Wouldn't that be too much trouble?"
Normally, Barbara would have hesitated to bother others. She'd rather put in extra effort and take a few more steps herself.
But this time, they were heading to save the injured. Arriving earlier meant less suffering for those in need.
So, she decided it wouldn't hurt to trouble the Honorary Knight just this once.
"No problem. If you spread your wind gliders, I can manipulate the Anemo element to lift us up. It's not difficult."
Nolan smiled warmly as he spoke.
"Okay!"
Barbara nodded eagerly, her twin golden ponytails swaying along with the hem of her off-shoulder white dress.
"Fine. The sooner we finish, the sooner I can clock out."
Rosaria summoned her wind glider with a small yawn.
Unlike traditional sisters of the Church, Rosaria typically worked at night. Her duties consisted of patrolling Mondstadt, keeping the peace, and capturing suspicious individuals.
As she put it: "In a happy and boring city like Mondstadt, someone's got to do the dirty work."
Her responsibilities were heavy, and working night shifts meant she often felt drowsy during the day. If it hadn't been for the fact that it was dangerous for Barbara to venture into Dragonspine alone, coupled with Sister Victoria's insistence, she would never have bothered to visit the freezing mountains during the daytime. Wouldn't it have been nicer to slack off in the cathedral?
"Thank you for your hard work, Miss Rosaria."
Barbara's sweet and healing smile graced her fair face. If it were a regular citizen, they'd probably have cheered or swooned at the sight.
Unfortunately, Rosaria remained indifferent.
Nolan, on the other hand, was affected. Seeing Barbara's smile made him feel warm and cozy, even in the frigid snowfields.
With a quick motion, he conjured a wind current. The group rose on the updraft and glided forward, aided by the Anemo element.
The swirling snowstorm ahead was swept aside by the same Anemo energy, making the journey much easier.
Flying was much faster than trekking up the mountain. In less than half an hour, they reached the site of the avalanche.
From above, they could see that large sections of the road were buried under snow. In the exposed areas, a few tents had been set up, and people moved in and out of them. Clearly, this was a temporary base for treating the injured.
Nolan descended with the two, landing gently in front of the tents.
A sister from the Church of Favonius emerged from one of the tents. Her eyes brightened upon seeing Barbara.
"Miss Barbara, you're here!"
"Yes, Sister Scoline. What's the situation now?"
The cold mountain wind fluttered Barbara's dress slightly. Her white tights revealed only her lower calves and the tops of her cuffed ankle boots.
"Well, for unknown reasons, there was a sudden avalanche on the nearby mountainside.
"It affected three adventuring parties in the area, over twenty people in total.
"Fortunately, the Adventurers' Guild organized a timely rescue, and everyone was brought back. But most of them are seriously injured.
"Some even have internal organ damage, and the healing magic we know isn't enough to fully treat them. That's why we had to call for you, Miss Barbara."
Sister Scoline explained the situation.
"An unknown cause triggered the avalanche? Were any of the affected adventuring parties from Benny's Adventure Team?"
Nolan couldn't help but ask upon hearing the young sister's report.
If Bennett happened to be nearby and ran into an accident, there could only be one explanation—his legendary bad luck had struck again.
"That unlucky adventurer, Bennett? No, he's not here," Scoline replied, shaking her head.
"Hmm, then it seems like a normal accident," Nolan said with a nod of relief.
That being said, even though Bennett wasn't caught in this avalanche, he was probably encountering some other danger elsewhere.
After all, his "Wheel of Misfortune" Constellation, much like Lisa's "Hourglass(English: Tempus Fugit)", had some negative aspects, but on the other hand, it also carried immense positive effects.
For instance, no matter how many dangers Bennett encounters, he always manages to turn them into good fortune in the end.
Nolan remembered that before he had crossed over, when doing daily tasks in the Sumeru region, he would often encounter a person who could never catch any fish, but always ended up catching something else.
It seemed that person must have had some strange Fate as well.
"Honorary Knight, thank you for bringing us up here. Miss Scoline and I will go treat the injured adventurers now."
Having understood the situation, Barbara didn't waste any more time. Treating the injured was urgent, but before leaving, she expressed her gratitude to Nolan.
[Barbara Has Developed Good Feelings Towards You, Obtained 240 Affection Points. Current Affection Level: Lv. 3 (200/300)]
"Okay," Nolan smiled and replied.
Barbara and Sister Scoline entered one of the tents. Rosaria, who had been watching quietly and a little bored with her arms crossed, followed them inside.
Then another affinity prompt appeared:
[Rosaria Has Developed Good Feelings Towards You, Obtained 200 Affection Points. Current Affection Level: Lv. 2 (100/200)]
Just by bringing them up here, he had earned some affection points. Should he bring them back down the mountain later?
Nolan thought to himself while looking at the avalanche site.
Just as he was about to look away, he suddenly noticed a figure on the mountain. Could it be Albedo?
Nolan's eyesight was sharp, and he could make out the person on the mountain clearly.
What a coincidence! It was indeed Albedo, the one who had been summoned by Jean to Dragonspine to find him. Nolan was slightly surprised, and then he spread his Wind Glider and flew toward Albedo.
However, he couldn't help but feel a little puzzled. Why was Albedo here? Did he come to check if help was needed after hearing about the avalanche?
Entombed City, Left Peak of the Mountain Path.
"Hey, Albedo! I heard you were looking for me?"
Nolan landed on the snow-covered mountaintop and called out to Albedo, who seemed to be turning around, as if about to leave.
Albedo paused for a moment, then turned and nodded.
"I didn't expect you to arrive so quickly. You should head to the camp first. I still need to collect some alchemical materials. I'll explain everything when I get back."
"Uh, okay."
Nolan was momentarily stunned. Something about Albedo felt off, as if something wasn't quite right.
He glanced at Albedo's neck and noticed there was no golden star mark.
Nolan fell silent for a moment. If he remembered correctly, this person before him was likely the fake "Primordial" Albedo from the Shadows Amidst Snowstorms event storyline.
It was a creation like Albedo, made of "Gold," but it had defects. It was eventually swallowed by Durin, the corrupted dragon, who had died on the mountain hundreds of years ago and only recently awoke.
The fake Albedo, seeing his "brother," the real Albedo, living so well, wanted to take his place, even attempting to become him. However, he believed that the golden star mark on Albedo's neck was an imperfection, proof of his flaws. So, when he transformed into Albedo, he didn't include the mark.
As a result, Nolan easily recognized that this was the fake Albedo. He hadn't encountered him the last time he came to the mountains, but now, here he was.
The fake Albedo, seeing Nolan staring at him thoughtfully, grew a little irritated. The man didn't leave and didn't speak. He began to feel restless. If it were anyone else, he would've dealt with him by now.
However, the fake Albedo had witnessed Nolan's battle with Durin and knew he was no match for him, so he hoped he would just leave quickly.
Nolan was unaware of the fake Albedo's thoughts. He was considering how to deal with him.
Letting him go wasn't an option, but killing him wasn't ideal either, considering he was Albedo's "brother."
After some thought, Nolan decided that the best course of action was to knock him out and bring him to Albedo for disposal. This way, he'd gain some Adventure EXP and wouldn't have to worry about what to do with him.
With that in mind, Nolan's pupils began to glow gold as he looked at the fake Albedo.
[Level: 72]
At level 72, he was much weaker than the real Albedo. Nolan didn't waste any time talking. A translucent thread silently appeared behind him.
With a swift motion, he struck the back of the fake Albedo's head!
"Thud!"
The mental shockwave knocked the fake Albedo unconscious immediately, without even a chance to react.
Nolan felt confident that he could easily defeat anyone below level 80 or anyone at level 80 without breakthroughs.
[Defeated A Powerful Enemy, Obtained 11,592 Adventure EXP.]
Over 10,000 Adventure EXP—quite good. Nolan smiled at the notification that appeared on his character panel, then used his mental threads to lift the fake Albedo and flew toward Albedo's camp.
Blocking out the cold, biting winds, it didn't take long for Nolan to reach the snow mountain camp.
The first thing Nolan noticed upon arriving at the camp was the massive figure of the dragon Durin outside. Its body had grown significantly larger, and its appearance was now quite majestic—perhaps it was gradually returning to its former glory.
"So, it's you, the little guy who beat me up!" Durin shouted casually upon seeing Nolan.
It seemed the dragon, emboldened by its larger physique and slight recovery of its former grandeur, had let its attitude swell a bit, even daring to call him "little guy."
Well, from a dragon's perspective, he was indeed a little guy, so Nolan decided not to bother arguing with it.
"Albedo, look at the gift I brought you!"
Nolan smiled as he entered the camp and spoke to Albedo inside.
"Honorary Knight, I called you here to help; there was no need to bring a gift," Albedo replied with a smile. However, his gaze shifted to the figure held behind Nolan by translucent psychic threads, and his expression froze momentarily.
"He looks exactly like you. No doubt your 'brother,' right? It seems he even caused an avalanche that endangered some adventurers."
Nolan dropped the unconscious fake Albedo in front of the real one and briefly explained the situation.
"I think I understand," Albedo said after a moment of contemplation. "A few days ago, my alchemy notes went missing. It must have been him who took them. The avalanche was likely caused by his practice with alchemy."
Albedo looked down at the unconscious fake Albedo, who looked just like him, and explained his identity in brief.
"Well, your 'brother' has quite the nasty personality. You should discipline him properly. Luckily, no one died because of him," Nolan said bluntly.
"Mm," Albedo nodded. He had no intention of killing his "brother." He believed that the fake Albedo was simply overwhelmed by extreme thoughts and had delusions of replacing him.
Still, a little discipline might help change his mindset.
"If you'd like, I have a way to restrain his actions," Nolan offered after thinking for a moment.
He was, of course, referring to the "Command Seal."
"No, that would only provoke his rebellious tendencies. Let me try first," Albedo shook his head and declined.
"Fair enough," Nolan said indifferently. With Albedo around, the fake Albedo wouldn't be able to cause any trouble anyway.
Switching topics, Nolan asked about the main matter:
"Acting Grand Master Jean said you wanted to research a way to access the Abyss. Have you made any progress? Is there anything I can help with?"
"Hold on," Albedo replied with a nod. He quickly used Geo elemental energy to bind the fake Albedo, ensuring he wouldn't escape when he woke up.
After securing the fake Albedo and instructing Durin to watch over him, Albedo led Nolan out of the camp and into the interior of Dragonspine, toward a spatial rift they had discovered.
With Albedo guiding the way, they arrived quickly.
The rift was located in a cave deep within the snowy mountain. Surrounding it were Abyss creatures that Nolan had never seen before—bear-like monsters with jet-black bodies.
They didn't look friendly.
Fortunately, Albedo had sealed the creatures near the spatial rift using alchemical methods and Geo elemental power.
Standing outside the seal with Nolan, Albedo pondered for a moment before saying:
"Reaching the Abyss isn't particularly complicated. These creatures emerged from the spatial rift, so theoretically, they should be able to return through it as well."
"If we can also pass through the rift, we should be able to reach the Abyss."
Albedo's explanation was straightforward, and Nolan understood quickly. He guessed, "So the problem now is that you're encountering obstacles while trying to pass through the rift?"
"Exactly. This golden spatial rift emits an incredibly powerful 'erosive' force. So far, nothing other than Abyss creatures has been able to withstand it."
Albedo nodded in confirmation.
"Hey, hey, hey! Don't tell me you're expecting me to go through it. That's not happening," Nolan exclaimed, eyes wide with shock as he immediately refused.
What kind of joke was this? A force capable of eroding even the edges of the world itself—there was no way he'd risk stepping into it!
