Chapter 285: Dog's Head
Under the pincer attack from both front and rear, the Resentful Demon appeared somewhat beleaguered. At times, it had no choice but to rely on its tough body to endure some damage to avoid lethal strikes from one side.
Judging by the Resentful Demon's current skills, equipment, and items, its role resembled an artillery-type Mage, proficient at dealing sustained and burst damage at mid-to-close range. However, its cloak was of excellent quality; it not only significantly weakened incoming attacks but could also auto-heal and enhance the user's various attributes. Combined with its skeletal body, which lacked any "absolute weak spots," and the corrosive green flames that could erupt from anywhere on its form, it could easily function as a close-combat Mage, trading blows to wear down or even kill enemies.
However, two fists are no match for four hands, and even a fierce tiger fears a pack of wolves. Li Ang and Miss Chai coordinated seamlessly. If the Resentful Demon showed the slightest intention of a desperate counterattack, one would retreat, allowing the other to press the advantage.
The worst part was that once Li Ang and Miss Chai realized the Resentful Demon had no vital points, they immediately switched to attacking the Gulu Lugu in its arms. Sometimes, they even feigned attacks, forcing the Resentful Demon to take damage to protect its comrade.
Li Ang's spear repeatedly thrust towards Gulu Lugu's position, shredding the Resentful Demon's cloak and leaving countless scars on its white bone skeleton with Ripple Energy. (Since the opponent had a skeletal body, the Cutter Title Skill was of little use.)
He even declared with conviction, "Good! Truly worthy of the legendary bone spirit, to stand against me for so long in such a fair fight."
How is ganging up on one person a 'fair fight'?!
While Li Ang was speaking, Chuyin stood nearby, holding a microphone and "singing" loudly.
Her Title Skill, "I'm Crazy About Singing," according to its description, could apply different buffs or debuffs to allies or enemies by singing different sounds. However, like all other members of the Mobile Detachment, Chuyin's team had its own analysis unit. This unit conducted experiments, research, and analysis on each member's skills and equipment to develop usage strategies.
The analysis team discovered that the trigger conditions for the "I'm Crazy About Singing" skill were much broader than they had anticipated. Not only could well-known songs activate it, but also obscure lyrics and melodies, even those haphazardly concocted by composers.
Even an illogical sentence with a simple rise and fall in tone, or a few emotionally charged words delivered with cadence, could trigger the effects of "I'm Crazy About Singing"!
Thus, the highly imaginative analysis team uploaded a dozen self-composed songs to music stores like iTunes, Last.fm, the Gracenote database, and other music libraries. These songs could also trigger Chuyin's Special Effects.
Furthermore, the skill had a hidden activation criterion (a pattern the analysis team had summarized themselves): "The emotion conveyed by a song's lyrics and melody determines its effect." This principle led to the songs they composed being extremely "quirky."
"Awesome! Yeah! Nice! Hmm, good! Support! Love!"
Chuyin held the microphone, singing—or rather, shouting—equally incomprehensible words to an inexplicable melody, somewhat like rapping.
Perhaps due to sheer embarrassment, a blush spread across her face, clearly visible even in the dimly lit subway station.
"Little Angel, hey! Drawn by your looks, loyal to your character! I'm claiming you, hands off! So sweet, tsk tsk! What a precious boy, too handsome for words! We'll protect our bestest big baby!"
As Chuyin's voice grew louder, the buffs enveloping Li Ang and Miss Chai grew increasingly pronounced.
Li Ang's player stats for strength, agility, and constitution each temporarily increased by one point from their base of 11. Moreover, a visible layer of golden light emerged on the Red White Plate Miss Chai inhabited, looking dazzlingly cool.
Nearby, Ash maintained an icy composure, while Wu Mu looked extremely uncomfortable, completely unsure how to react.
When Chuyin first received the instruction manual from the analysis team, she too had wondered if this stuff could even be called singing.
The cool, older-sister type in a white lab coat from the analysis team had nonchalantly told her, "If so many shitty foreign pop songs can be pushed by capital to top the charts and win countless awards, does that mean the song I wrote in three minutes doesn't count as a song?"
Chuyin could only... follow the analysis team's advice.
In any case, the proof was in the pudding. After various buffs were applied to Li Ang and Miss Chai, the Resentful Demon finally faltered and was stabbed in the face by a spear!
The blade of the Triangular Bone Tipped Spear scraped along its jawbone and pierced out from the back of its skull, puncturing the hood directly.
With the hood gone, the Resentful Demon's face was finally revealed to everyone.
Its skull was more elongated than a human's, with less pronounced cheekbones. The upper and lower jaws were flat and met evenly, and its canine teeth were strong and sharp.
It was a dog's skull.
The tearing of its hood seemed to trigger something in the Resentful Demon. It hastily stuffed Gulu Lugu into the empty cavity of its torso. With a shudder, its body erupted in raging green flames, violently forcing back the enemies in front and behind it.
The green flames erupting from the Resentful Demon even melted away a large portion of the barrier Wu Mu had erected, which was originally intended to trap it.
With a crisp CRACK, the structurally damaged barrier collapsed on its own. Wu Mu, his face as pale as paper, stumbled back three steps, leaning against a subway station pillar to keep himself from collapsing.
While retreating, Li Ang had already drawn his Barrett and shouted, "OK!" to Miss Chai.
Miss Chai, escaping from behind the Resentful Demon, instantly understood Li Ang's intention. She ran towards him, making an "OK" sign with her hand.
Li Ang steadied the Barrett. He aimed the muzzle through the circle formed by Miss Chai's "OK" gesture and fired towards the Resentful Demon's torso.
The heavy bullet, trailing fire, shot from the barrel and struck the Resentful Demon, which was wreathed in green flames.
However, even with Li Ang's acute hearing, he heard no sound of the heavy bullet piercing the enemy's body or hitting a wall or the floor.
Against a skeletal enemy, neither the Drown in Misfortune Assassination Method nor the Cutter Title Skill had much effect. Li Ang put away the Barrett. He had Miss Chai raise her hands high, fingertips touching above her head to form a circle, then fired a grenade through it.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! The grenade explosions rocked the subway station, but the pillar of green flame remained unaffected, surging even higher.
This time, even the ceiling of the subway station in the Grey-white World melted into a pool of grey-white sludge, constantly forming and dissolving, appearing and vanishing.
The Resentful Demon, now a figure of green flame and white bone, placed Gulu Lugu in the only flame-free spot on its body—the hollow of its torso. With a flick of its White Bone Palm, it conjured a long Green Flame Whip, pointing it diagonally towards Li Ang and the others.
The fifth barrier contraction was about to end.
