Chapter 37: 37:End Of Trial
Finally, both charged at the same time. Their fists were just inches from each other's faces, every muscle straining, every ounce of power behind the blows. This was the moment they both aimed to end it.
Then a sharp, blaring sound cut through the chaos.
A siren echoed across the burning forest, halting them mid-strike.
[The Test is over.]
The words hung in the air, the fight frozen in place, both still locked in each other's gaze. The siren grew louder until it seemed to ring inside everyone's head.
Before Hex could process his thoughts, a large glowing screen appeared before him.
[The event site has been destroyed by more than 60%]
Commencing forced reroute.
Before he could make sense of the message, his vision faded to black.
When Hex opened his eyes again, he saw nothing but darkness stretching around him.
His body felt confined, almost sealed inside something. A faint hiss sounded, and a lid above him swung open, revealing a massive black-and-white ceiling.
He sat up and saw rows of pods stretching into the distance. One by one, they began to open, and the room filled with startled voices.
"Shit… I thought I was dead."
"No way… That was all VR?"
"My heart nearly stopped there."
"Dammit… I knew they wouldn't actually kill us, but still…"
"What the hell was that about? Why did they pull us out so suddenly?"
A voice from somewhere in the crowd answered, "Don't you remember? The test site got destroyed. Over sixty percent. They had to eject us before it collapsed."
Hex ignored the chatter and pulled up his personal panel. The numbers and words that appeared made his chest tighten.

"As expected…" he muttered. Since it was only a virtual environment, none of the new abilities he had gained remained. Everything restored to prior.
"They can make beasts from data almost perfectly," Hex thought, "but since they didn't have time to integrate our essence crystals, they were still incomplete."
He climbed out of his pod and scanned the crowd. A short distance away, he spotted Sameer waving to him. Hex walked over.
"Hex, how did it go?" Sameer asked.
"It was alright. What about you?"
Sameer's expression sank. "I got knocked out."
Hex understood immediately. 'So he died in there…'
"Where are Lex and Luna?" Hex asked.
"I don't know. They should be somewhere around here," Sameer said, glancing across the room. They eventually spotted them far off in a different section.
Before they could decide what to do next, a commanding voice rang out over the noise.
"Cadets, line up. You will be checked and then assigned to your respective places. The assignments will be done according to the call."
They turned toward a man with sharp features and a heavy military coat. His eyes swept across the crowd before he spoke again.
"I cannot say whether this is good luck or bad luck for you. For some of you, being ejected early means your grades will take a serious hit. Others are still inside completing the test."
He snorted, the sound cutting through the murmurs. Hex lowered his gaze.
'He's not talking about me. I just gave a hand. It was that mad hound who caused the mess…'
Even so, a small flicker of hope lingered in his chest that he wouldn't get into trouble.
Alas,he seems to have expected a bit too much.
"Um… is there something on my face?" Hex asked, his voice unsteady as he felt two sharp gazes fixed on him. The medical checks were happening in the next room, but in the middle of the wait, he had been quietly called aside.
Now he stood in front of two men in military uniforms, both looking like they could crush him with a stare.
One was called Argent. The other, known for the long scar across his eye, was Aon.
If looks could kill, Hex was certain he would already be dead.
"Did I make any mistake?" he asked carefully.
"In the military, you address your superior properly," Aon said coldly.
"Yes, sir," Hex replied quickly, standing straighter.
"Tell me, kid," Aon continued, his voice sharp.
"What was going through your head when you did that?"
Hex's lips twitched. 'So they've been watching me closely,' he thought. After a moment, he answered.
"To survive and gain more points."
Argent's expression darkened. "You say you wanted to survive, yet you lit a wildfire that nearly killed everyone… including yourself."
Hex gave a faint, almost innocent smile. "Sir, I didn't know it was VR. I thought it was real. I figured that if I created a bigger crisis, people would be forced to unite and escape together. If we worked as a group, we'd have a better chance against unknown threats, and I'd be safer in the process."
"Also as people formed group, few guys who were looking to kill wouldn't able to act."
Argent and Aon exchanged a silent look, then gave a small nod.
"I see. That's not a bad thought," Argent said.
Aon clicked his tongue in annoyance. "The problem is, by doing that, you shot yourself in the foot."
"Pardon?" Hex asked, genuinely confused.
"You triggered a safety warning," Aon explained. "It forced everyone out. You were the top scorer among all cadets, but because you were ejected on the third day, the others can catch up and pass you."
"Oh…" Hex nodded, trying to look disappointed, though relief flickered inside him.
'Good. I avoided trouble. Being first place without backing would be dangerous.'
"Alright, you can go," Aon said, waving him away.
Hex paused. "That's it?"
"What did you expect? Something else?" Aon asked with a faint grin.
"We just wanted to see if you were another psycho ass who entered here seeking thrill ," Argent said, his tone almost casual. "Someone who destroys everything for no reason."
Hex felt a chill at the way their eyes seemed to study him.
"And if I was unstable?" he asked.
They didn't answer. Instead, both gave slow, unsettling smiles.
A shiver ran down Hex's spine. 'Why do I feel like these two are actually looking for people like that? No… worse. What if they're psychos themselves, hunting other psychos for fun?'
