Chapter 51: Chapter 51: A Step Ahead
"You're truly remarkable, Tong Gu."
The woman who had suddenly appeared before Tong Gu exuded no energy fluctuations, nor did her physique suggest any remarkable physical strength.
She had fiery red hair, a prominent nose, deep-set eyes, and an exotic charm in her features. Looking at the shattered remnants of the minor cursed spirit before her, she clicked her tongue in mock admiration.
Dongxia's Thirteen Golden Seats, Seventh Seat: The Witch, Queen of Ghosts, Cursed King—Wu Ma Yuhe.
Tong Gu's expression darkened as his muscles tensed, but he quickly exhaled and relaxed, gripping his long blade tightly.
"According to the Golden Oath, someone of your level is prohibited from attacking me, isn't that right?"
The woman nodded, her expression slightly troubled, before covering her mouth and laughing softly.
"Even if I could, I wouldn't kill you like this. It's far too dull."
Suddenly, she produced a unique recording pointer and tossed it toward Tong Gu. Instinctively wary, Tong Gu had no intention of accepting anything from her.
"Catch it!"
But then, a familiar voice called out. Tong Gu's hands moved involuntarily, and before he realized it, he had caught the pointer.
[You have obtained an item: Permanent Pointer (Recorded).]
Standing behind the red-haired woman was Mind Manipulator Bao Huijun, who had appeared without any sign of movement, just like Wu Ma Yuhe.
Tong Gu instantly realized the truth: his senses must have been entirely distorted. He could no longer discern who was speaking, let alone confirm if the environment around him was real.
The critical question was—when did he fall under their control? And where exactly was he now?
The red-haired woman observed Tong Gu's expression with amusement.
"The best way to mock the Exploiter and those foolish enough to trust his strategies is to ensure his death in a storyline world."
"Ah, I wonder how many people will choose to end their lives after watching this…"
The thought seemed to delight Wu Ma Yuhe as she threw her head back in laughter.
Tong Gu glanced at the Permanent Pointer in his hand. Its direction was fixed, pointing directly at the portal before him. Under Bao Huijun's manipulation, Tong Gu stepped toward the portal against his will. Finally, the pointer touched its shimmering surface.
As the portal gleamed with an iron-like light, Wu Ma Yuhe's laughter grew even more maniacal. Tong Gu's body slowly began to vanish into the portal.
Just as he was about to disappear entirely, a ray of sunlight broke through the clouds, unexpectedly casting light onto the scene. Catching the golden glow from the corner of his eye, Tong Gu smiled faintly and stopped resisting, diving headfirst into the portal.
And then, he was gone.
---
Zhang Xingwen's body was entirely enveloped by the cursed spirit's black hair, lying within it as if utterly unaware, his eyes shut tightly.
The monitor who had been observing the scene hesitated. Could the intel have been wrong? Was Zhang Xingwen not the hidden Golden Seat master, the missing Third Seat of Dongxia's Thirteen Golden Seats?
No matter. Kill him anyway. If Wu Ma has succeeded, and the Exploiter dies during a livestreamed mission, the fools who cling to the hope of defeating the Game of Fate will inevitably despair.
"This world is already one of despair," the man murmured with an air of tragic grandeur. "We are merely its messengers."
"Ha…"
A lazy chuckle cut through his thoughts, and the man immediately tensed, instinctively concealing his presence. Whipping around, he stared at Zhang Xingwen's position, his pupils constricting in shock.
The white-haired Zhang Xingwen had risen from the black mass, and the cursed spirit was now retreating in fear.
Stretching as if waking from a nap, the old man cracked his neck and back before speaking softly,
"Though I appreciate you reminding me of my late wife's voice… the sun has risen, and it's time to wake up from this dream."
As his voice fell, rays of dawn-like light began emanating from Zhang Xingwen's body. His expression shifted, and the kindly elder visage disappeared as the wrinkles on his face smoothed out, revealing a younger, sharper appearance—one of arrogance and cold indifference.
Raising his right hand as if summoning something, the sunlight intensified, breaking through the dissipating clouds to illuminate the sky.
The concealed observer trembled in awe. Unable to maintain his cover, wings sprouted from his back with a sudden burst of power, and he took to the sky in an attempt to escape.
It's him! Zhang Xingwen is indeed the missing Third Seat!
With a single motion of his right index finger, Zhang Xingwen unleashed a scorching beam of light, instantly piercing the man's wings and sending him plummeting.
Zhang Xingwen paid no heed to where the fallen man landed, confident that the Abnormal Affairs Bureau would handle it. Instead, he turned to face the cursed spirit, his overwhelming aura radiating like the sun.
"Wu Ma Yuhe, since Zheng Xingxia and the others have chosen to pardon your past actions, why meddle with these accursed messengers again?"
The cursed spirit writhed in the oppressive heat, its form disintegrating as Wu Ma Yuhe's voice echoed through the air.
"Accursed? You arrogant fools will never understand fate."
"And you? After all this time, why step forward again?"
Zhang Xingwen's eyes lowered in indifference. Without further words, he crushed the cursed spirit with a casual gesture. His gaze shifted to the distant clouds, his radiant aura gradually fading.
"Let's hope your gamble pays off this time," he murmured.
As he returned to his elder form, Zhang Xingwen appeared disinterested, a hint of weariness in his demeanor. He had no love for this plan, but since his pupil had no objections, he could only intervene to lend a hand. Beyond that, none of this mattered to him anymore.
---
The park was in complete disarray. Hiding in the shadows, Wu Guangzhi clasped his hand over his mouth, suppressing his breathing.
That woman… she's a monster…
The malevolent aura in the air made him feel as though he were naked in a freezing storm.
Ju Dongliu wiped the blood from her hands and flicked it onto the grass, gazing at the dissipating remains of the cursed spirit with disinterest.
Wu Guangzhi watched as she seemed about to leave, breathing a sigh of relief. He silently thanked his luck for not engaging her; otherwise, he'd have surely ended up as a bloody pulp.
His mission was simple: distract Ju Dongliu while Wu Ma Yuhe lured Tong Gu into the storyline world. If Ju Dongliu couldn't be killed, at least Wu Ma Yuhe's plan had succeeded.
"Oh, I nearly forgot…"
Just as she reached the park's entrance, Ju Dongliu paused and slowly turned around, her gaze locking onto a corner of the park.
Wu Guangzhi froze, his heart pounding in terror. She had found him.
