Chapter 571: Delivery Room of Choice, Mother and Daughter Safe and Sound
Jinya felt like her skin was going moldy these days.
Every day she ate and slept, then slept and ate, and even the cat climbing frame in the animal shed was dismantled, just in case she accidentally fell.
Every day, Jinya sulked with a small pout, and she took out all her frustration on Little Jin.
Little Jin was all too willing to let her bite and hit him; as long as Jinya was happy, she could torment him however she liked.
Every day, no matter the weather, he would catch the freshest rabbits for Jinya, and occasionally when Little Sen added some extra dishes for Jinya, Little Jin would stay watchful from start to finish, as if afraid Little Sen would slip in something bad.
"Little Jin, am I that kind of person? You're even testing for poison!"
Seeing Little Jin nibble a small bite from the food prepared for Jinya, Little Sen laughed in exasperation.
"Is that how unreliable I am in your eyes? Fine, in the future, don't expect me to lift a finger even for your baby."
Little Jin rolled his eyes at him, and upon confirming the food was fine, turned and left.
Mengmeng and the little nurse helping nearby laughed so hard they couldn't stand straight.
Dr. Ou pulled Dr. Chen aside to start planning Jinya's entire pregnancy and lactation period.
It's not that nobody wanted to take Jinya away, but so far, no one succeeded.
The local Forestry and Grassland Bureau and the provincial rescue center preferred keeping Jinya here. They've done a lot of work, blocking a significant amount of pressure.
The rest, Professor Bai and the two veterinarians, used their own connections, and when Brother Dao brought his mother to temporarily stay in Xiaozhai Village in Jiamu Gully, the whole area was practically like a fortress.
Although the old leader had retired, his influence over the years remained. After a call with provincial leaders, those who came to "persuade" them vanished overnight.
These people and institutions didn't necessarily want to harm Jinya, but were mostly interested in snatching this research project. After all, even if the little cub born didn't survive, there was still a lot of research to be done.
Ultimately, it wasn't their own one they had watched grow up and felt protective of.
When Chen Ying hurried back from Dian Province, another week passed.
Before he left, there had been a commotion. The Lucky Leopard threw a tantrum upon hearing he was leaving, causing chaos among animals on both sides of the border, with even monkeys falling victim to its anger.
Indochinese leopards originally had gibbons in their diet, but once it knew the gibbons were also protected species, it chased them around howling. If it weren't for two or three gibbon families teaming up to fight back, who knows what might have happened.
Ultimately, two female students from the research team managed to calm the Lucky Leopard, serving it good food and massages daily. Although it didn't understand their words, it seemed to enjoy the attention.
On the day Chen Ying left, the leopard refused to see him off, staying perched on a high branch, with a sad look in its eyes, as if feeling abandoned.
This leopard was quite a drama queen, making Chen Ying feel a pang of sympathy for a moment.
Just as he reached the airport, without even taking off yet, he got a call from the camp saying the leopard had disappeared and had taken a handmade coconut tree toy Chen Ying had made for it.
Pinching the bridge of his nose in resignation, Chen Ying had to let it be. It was a wild leopard, after all, free to come and go.
Yet a more shocking piece of news came after his plane landed: the leopard was moving inland along the border.
Upon seeing this update, Chen Ying had an unbelievable thought: could it be coming all that way to find him to take responsibility?
This question was forgotten the moment he returned to Jiamu Gully and saw Jinya.
Jinya had gained quite a bit of weight but seemed somewhat gloomy.
Upon seeing Chen Ying, she immediately pounced on him, whining endlessly as if tattling on everyone—from Leopard Sister to Brother Leopard and Bai Bingyang—as if she was the victim, with Little Jin being the ringleader!
After comforting and smoothing her fur for a while, Jinya finally calmed down but refused to stay by herself. She was terrified Leopard Sister wouldn't allow her out, but only when she followed the two-legged beasts would Leopard Sister reluctantly let her be.
Without even unpacking his luggage, Chen Ying took Jinya for a comprehensive examination.
"These are the results from the blood tests and ultrasound. The fetus is developing well, but there's only one."
The number was a bit low, but that's normal. Getting pregnant was already a favor from the heavens, expecting more would be really greedy.
After confirming Jinya was doing well, Chen Ying advocated for her to have some activity for her physical and mental wellbeing, eventually obtaining three hours of time outdoors for Jinya daily after a few hours of negotiation with Little Jin and Leopard Sister.
What could Chen Ying do? When the fluffy creatures got stubborn, with a look of "I won't listen, I don't understand," can you really just force them to listen?
Fortunately, Leopard Sister knew she was being overly anxious and compromised; she only prohibited Jinya from climbing too high, urging Chen Ying and Little Sen to build a wider bamboo platform with more steps beside the high platform, especially for Jinya to rest and sunbathe, and later for the cub to play when it's born.
Parents care for their cubs, considering their long-term well-being.
Leopard Sister wasn't Jinya's mom, but Jinya had grown up in her care, so she was naturally treated differently from the other cats.
After a seventy-day gestational period, and following several rounds of consultations, Chen Ying finally agreed to grant some access to the Rare Feline Research Team, led by Qing Ye and the Chinese Academy of Sciences team, assisted by the Panda Center team, with the first responders from the emergency station, forming a super team dedicated to researching Jinya and Little Jin's child.
