Football: I'm Vardy

Chapter 16: 14: Two days in Leicester, still focused

Is it Leicester City's time in this second matchday of the championship?

Leicester City plays its second match of the 2016-2017 Premier League season. Are the stars ready to shine? Vardy is here!

Leicester City, Act Two: The Quest for Redemption

After a disappointing start against Hull City in the opening game of the 2016-2017 season, Leicester City was gearing up for their second league match. The weight of that defeat still lingered, but the reigning champions knew they couldn't afford to doubt themselves. Claudio Ranieri, ever the optimist, rallied his players, reminding them of who they were: a team capable of defying all the odds.

Their opponent for the second matchday was none other than Arsenal, a formidable team led by Arsène Wenger. The Foxes faced a true test at the King Power Stadium. While the Gunners had been one of the few teams to defeat Leicester during their miraculous title-winning campaign, Ranieri's men were determined not to let history repeat itself. The fans packed the stadium, ready to push their favorite team forward. All eyes were on Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, and Kasper Schmeichel, the backbone of this legendary squad.

A Focused Dressing Room

Inside the dressing room, the atmosphere was calm yet electric. Vardy silently replayed the moments from last season when he had shone against Arsenal. He knew the spotlight was on him, and he had to prove that the previous season was no fluke. Mahrez, on the other hand, exuded his usual confidence, casually juggling a ball while listening to Ranieri's instructions.

"Listen to me, guys," Ranieri began. "It's just one match. Just one. What matters is what we do today. We're at home. Let them feel that this ground is ours." The players nodded silently, each focusing on their role.

Kickoff

The stadium roared as the referee blew the whistle. From the very first minutes, Leicester displayed a different energy than they had shown against Hull. Vardy pressed high, relentlessly harassing Arsenal's defenders. Mahrez dazzled with his technique, weaving through defenders to unsettle the Londoners' backline. But Arsenal wasn't there to sit back. Mesut Özil and Alexis Sánchez quickly took control of the midfield, dictating the pace and forcing Leicester into a deeper defensive posture.

In the 15th minute, Arsenal nearly opened the scoring with a powerful strike from Sánchez, but Kasper Schmeichel, commanding in goal, pulled off a stunning save. That moment lifted Leicester's spirits, and they began to push forward with more confidence.

The Return of the Vardy Express

In the 30th minute, Leicester finally broke through. Danny Drinkwater intercepted the ball in midfield and launched a pinpoint long pass to Vardy. The English striker dashed forward, leaving Arsenal's defense in his wake. One-on-one with Petr Čech, Vardy stayed cool and fired a low shot into the bottom corner of the net. The stadium erupted as Vardy celebrated with a knee slide in front of the jubilant crowd. Leicester led 1-0.

Arsenal, however, was quick to respond. Barely ten minutes later, a quick combination between Özil and Sánchez set up a deflected strike from Theo Walcott that found the back of the net. The score was 1-1 at halftime, with both teams bracing for a fierce second half.

A Fierce Battle

The intensity of the match increased as the second half began. Leicester aimed to regain the lead with their trademark lightning-fast counterattacks. Mahrez, brilliantly set up by Marc Albrighton, unleashed a dazzling dribble and strike from the edge of the box, but Čech tipped the shot away. Arsenal, for their part, launched wave after wave of attacks, but the Foxes' defense, led by Wes Morgan and Robert Huth, stood firm.

Ranieri, ever active on the touchline, made his first substitution in the 65th minute, bringing on Ahmed Musa for Albrighton to inject pace and fresh energy into the attack. The Nigerian immediately made an impact, using his athleticism to unsettle Arsenal's defense.

The match took a dramatic turn in the 75th minute. In a chaotic sequence inside Leicester's box, Arsenal was awarded a penalty after an accidental handball by Morgan. Sánchez stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Schmeichel, the hero of the evening, guessed correctly and made a stunning save. The stadium roared as if Leicester had just scored, and the Foxes regained their momentum.

A Dramatic Finish

Buoyed by their fans, Leicester launched one final offensive push in the last ten minutes. In the 83rd minute, Musa collected the ball on the left flank and delivered a low cross to Vardy, who attempted an acrobatic volley. The ball struck the crossbar, drawing a collective gasp of frustration from the crowd.

As the match edged into stoppage time, Leicester had one last chance. A corner from Mahrez found Wes Morgan, who rose highest to meet the ball with a thunderous header. But Čech, once again decisive, parried the effort. In the ensuing scramble, the ball fell to Vardy, who fired an instant shot… but it narrowly missed the post. Seconds later, the final whistle blew. The game ended 1-1.

A Positive Takeaway

As the players left the pitch, Leicester's mood was a mix of frustration and pride. Frustration at the missed opportunities to secure a victory, but pride in holding their own against a strong Arsenal side. Ranieri, ever the pragmatist, praised his team for their fighting spirit.

"That's it, lads," he said in the dressing room. "Matches like these show we're still here, that we belong. Keep going, and the wins will come."

For Vardy, the game marked a return to form. He had rediscovered his rhythm and proved that he could still make the difference against top teams. Mahrez, too, had demonstrated that he remained a constant threat, even under increased defensive scrutiny.

The season was still young, but Leicester had shown they were ready to take on new challenges. While no longer the underdogs they had been the previous year, they still had the hunger and determination that had carried them to the top. The journey ahead promised to be long, but the Foxes were ready to write another incredible chapter in their story.

Leicester City is rising again, with players believing in their abilities.

Confidence is growing, and Leicester City is finding its rhythm.
