Football: I'm Vardy

Chapter 15: 13: The Season Begins

Leicester City and the Start of a Season of Uncertainty

Leicester City, led by Claudio Ranieri, was preparing to begin the 2016-2017 Premier League season with the immense weight of a recent legacy. Their incredible run the previous season, defying all odds to win the title, had cemented their place in English football history. Yet, as they prepared to take the field for their first match, one question hung over the King Power Stadium and its fans: could they sustain this level of excellence?

For Jamie Vardy, the team's star striker, the opening match against Hull City was more than just the start of a new season—it was a personal challenge. Over the summer, he had dealt with transfer rumors and media pressure, but remained loyal to Leicester, turning down lucrative offers from more prestigious clubs. As he tightened the laces on his boots in the locker room, he reflected on his improbable journey from the lower leagues to the pinnacle of football. Now, he had to prove that his previous season wasn't just a fairy tale.

The Stadium is Ready

The KCOM Stadium in Hull, where Leicester would play their opener, buzzed with anticipation ahead of kickoff. Hull City's supporters were just as nervous as Leicester's. Hull had recently been promoted to the Premier League after a season in the Championship, and their primary goal was survival in the top flight. Leicester, on the other hand, entered the game as reigning champions. However, the respect their title demanded was tempered by skepticism—many believed their success had been a fluke.

On the sidelines, Claudio Ranieri watched his players warm up with his trademark mischievous smile. He knew the task ahead was monumental. Over the summer, he had strengthened the squad by signing Nampalys Mendy to replace the departed N'Golo Kanté, and forward Ahmed Musa to add more depth to their attack. However, the core group that had stunned the league the previous season remained unchanged. The key would be preserving their unique chemistry.

Kickoff

As soon as the referee blew the whistle, Leicester tried to impose their familiar style: a solid, compact defense paired with quick counterattacks spearheaded by Vardy and Riyad Mahrez. Yet Hull, buoyed by their home crowd, proved more aggressive than expected. In the opening minutes, the Tigers dominated possession and tested Kasper Schmeichel with several long-range shots.

Leicester, however, remained composed. In the 25th minute, Danny Drinkwater intercepted a pass in midfield, triggering a devastating counterattack. He passed to Mahrez, who weaved past two defenders before delivering a perfect ball to Vardy. The striker surged forward and unleashed a powerful shot, only for the ball to sail just over the crossbar. Frustrated, Vardy let out a cry but quickly raised his hand to encourage his teammates.

"This is only a matter of time," thought Ranieri, watching his players' efforts from the sidelines.

Hull Strikes First

But against the run of play, Hull took the lead just before halftime. A poorly cleared corner landed at the feet of a Tigers striker, who attempted an acrobatic volley. The ball ricocheted off a teammate and into the net. Schmeichel had no chance. The Hull fans erupted in joy, while Leicester left the field with a sense of déjà vu.

In the locker room, Ranieri remained calm. He urged his players to refocus and emphasized their ability to bounce back. "This is our strength. Don't let one goal bring you down. You are the champions of England—show it."

Leicester's Response

From the start of the second half, Leicester played with renewed intensity. The team seemed transformed. Mahrez, elusive and electric, forced a defender to foul him just outside the penalty area. In the 52nd minute, he stepped up to take the free kick and curled it beautifully into the top corner. The score was 1-1, and the Foxes had found their rhythm.

But Hull refused to back down. They fought back, matching Leicester blow for blow. Both teams created chances, and the goalkeepers delivered outstanding saves to keep the match level.

A Bitter Ending

As the match neared its conclusion, Leicester pushed for a winner. Ranieri brought on Ahmed Musa to inject more energy into the attack. The Nigerian quickly made an impact with his blistering pace, delivering a pinpoint cross to Vardy in the 85th minute. Vardy struck the ball first time, but Hull's goalkeeper made a stunning save to deny him.

Then, the unthinkable happened. In the 89th minute, Hull capitalized on a lapse in Leicester's defense to score a second goal. The stadium erupted, and the reigning champions found themselves stunned.

When the final whistle blew, Hull had secured a shocking 2-1 victory. The Leicester players left the field disappointed but determined. Critics wasted no time piling on: were the Foxes destined to be "one-season wonders"?

Back to Work

For Vardy and his teammates, the defeat was a blow. But in the days that followed, the team regrouped. Ranieri stressed the importance of humility and hard work. "We've already proven we can overcome impossible odds," he reminded them during a team meeting. "And we'll do it again."

The rest of the season would be a long journey, filled with ups and downs. Leicester would have to face not only the inflated expectations of fans and media but also opponents better prepared and more motivated than ever. For Vardy, it was another chance to show he wasn't just a fairy-tale player, but a true champion.

The 2016-2017 season wouldn't be a repeat of their miraculous triumph, but it would still provide its share of memorable moments. And even if Leicester never relived the magic of 2015-2016, one thing was certain: their fighting spirit and unity would remain etched in English football history.

But the players still believe in themselves and remain confident.

The next match will be the second round of the championship.

Will Leicester City rise to the occasion? Only time will tell!
