Chapter 66: Chapter 65: Anomaly
Swoosh—
The sword sliced through the air, severing the head, and the dark body collapsed backward.
The seventh one.
In just a few minutes, Tatsuya Suzuki had killed seven Assassins—or rather, seven bodies.
Men, women, the elderly, the young.
The strong, the thin, the fat.
Some were as light as a swallow yet possessed immense strength.
No matter how you classified them, they defied easy categorization.
But they were all Assassins, and indeed, they were all weaker than expected.
Although each was superior to an ordinary human, as Servants, their abilities were too low to compare with other Servants.
They fell after only a few rounds of fighting with Tatsuya.
If they were all the same, Tatsuya would have dispatched them even faster.
But every time, things changed. Each Assassin had a similar yet different fighting style, forcing Tatsuya to find a new weakness each time before he could strike the killing blow.
Despite the loss of seven of their number, the Assassins showed no fear and continued to leap from the treetops, launching suicidal attacks on Tatsuya with their weapons.
So far, Tatsuya hadn't retreated a single step under their assault.
As he fought, he analyzed the Assassins in his mind.
In preparation for the Holy Grail War, Tatsuya had specifically researched the Assassins whose true identities were most likely to be revealed—various Hassan-i-Sabbah.
Unlike the general public, the Magic Association had more detailed information.
Tatsuya recalled what he had read. Among those Hassans, there was indeed one known for having multiple personalities. Each personality was independent, mastering various skills beyond the reach of ordinary people.
Some were strategists, some proficient in foreign languages, others skilled in poisons, or experts in setting traps... and some could even wield strength and speed far beyond their original capabilities.
In addition, this Hassan could transform into male or female, old or young, without seeming out of character, adjusting his personality as needed.
His name was Hassan of the Hundred Faces.
Tatsuya came to the only possible conclusion.
"How's my weapon?" Morgan, sitting on a tree trunk with her back to him, casually stirred the fire with a branch she had picked up.
She didn't even bother to look. The outcome of this one-sided slaughter was only a matter of time.
The Assassins had interrupted her and Tatsuya's time together—a sin punishable by death.
Since Tatsuya wanted to deal with it, Morgan was happy to let him.
"It's very useful" Tatsuya called back loudly, his words tinged with an ancient style that made Morgan laugh.
He hadn't expected Morgan's weapon to be able to change shape so freely, turning into a two-handed sword.
Though Tatsuya had never mastered swordsmanship, under Scathach's tutelage, which emphasized mastering all forms of martial arts, he had made some progress with the sword.
He couldn't use his skills to their full extent in the forest, and he felt guilty about destroying so much of the natural landscape. Morgan's weapon, now transformed into a sword, eased his concerns.
Moreover, while his swordsmanship wasn't as proficient as his spear skills, it was more than sufficient to dispatch these weakened Assassins.
He had silently set a limit for himself—if any of these Assassins managed to get past him and reach Morgan, he would consider himself unworthy.
The eighth one.
The Assassin's body rolled back several times before coming to a stop.
Tatsuya shook the blood off his sword and scanned the area for any remaining threats.
But then a surprised voice came from behind him.
He turned to see Morgan shielding her eyes with her hand, as if checking something.
Puzzled, he immediately leaped back to her side, crouching down to ask, "What happened? Is there a new intruder?"
"That's not it," Morgan replied, shaking her head. "I just didn't expect the 'Garden of Disappointment' to be breached."
Tatsuya was shocked. "Breached? Didn't you say that even if someone survived, it wouldn't affect you?"
"Generally speaking, yes. Anyone who falls into the 'Garden of Disappointment' has to face their inner self. Even if they survive, their spirit would be worn down to almost nothing." Morgan wore a thoughtful expression. "This is the first time I've seen such a situation... It's as if they have no heart at all."
"No heart?" Tatsuya narrowed his eyes.
The Assassins were still lurking in the forest, attempting to overwhelm them with continued suicidal attacks.
Then the person who had entered the castle and been trapped in the 'Garden of Disappointment' had to be Kotomine Kirei.
"Yes... It seems my magic isn't perfect after all." Morgan's tone was relaxed. "I didn't expect to encounter someone immune to its effects."
"It might not be a flaw in your magic," Tatsuya said with a bitter smile as he gently held her arm.
When it came to Kotomine Kirei, Tatsuya didn't harbor any personal likes or dislikes; he simply regarded him as someone with whom he could still have a normal conversation.
In fact, Tatsuya had always felt that although Kirei wasn't a bad person, something seemed fundamentally broken about him.
It was difficult for Tatsuya to discern any ordinary human emotions in that agent.
He had encountered many priests from the Cathedral Church, but Kirei was unlike any of them.
Even the coldest of magi couldn't be placed in the same category as him.
"It seems my husband knows what's going on," Morgan said softly.
The sweet fragrance of her breath made Tatsuya realize how close he had come in his concern, his breath brushing against her face.
"No, I can't say I know much. I'm just speculating from a certain perspective because it's Kotomine Kirei," Tatsuya replied as he helped Morgan to her feet, frowning. "No matter how flawed he is, he's still Caren's biological father. I don't want to speak too poorly of him."
Morgan shook her head. "But that's the reality."
Releasing Morgan's arm, Tatsuya extinguished the campfire on the ground.
The Assassins around them seemed to have received new orders and began to retreat one by one.
"Come to think of it, they knew they were marching to their deaths, but they still advanced..." Tatsuya narrowed his eyes. "They must have used a Command Spell."
Morgan placed her hands on her hips and looked toward the castle. "Then the purpose of these shadows was to delay us with their attacks. It seems we underestimated the enemy."
"This doesn't look good. We should head over there too," Tatsuya said to Morgan.
"Aren't you going to raze them and the castle to the ground? There's still time," Morgan teased with a playful smile.
Tatsuya was taken aback for a moment. "If you've changed your mind, you don't have to go. I can prepare the magic now."
"You really don't understand romance," Morgan laughed.
Tatsuya waved his hand in resignation, ending the conversation. Suddenly, a swarm of crows appeared, surrounding the two of them.
"Let's just head directly to the city," Morgan advised. "I'm ready to dismantle the 'Garden of Disappointment.'"
"I understand."
