Chapter 243: Battle of Attrition... Part-3.
"So, that man is Jareth Ayad? No wonder Sylvie said he's very strong… Even I can't sense his aura despite being in the same grade…"
Rena glanced at Jareth, who was bombarding Fisur in the distance, and spoke in a curious tone.
Hearing her words, Risa smiled mischievously and spoke in a teasing tone,
"Hoh… Our professor is indeed very admirable; even the elven queen seemed to favor him after taking a single glance…"
"Well, he's indeed quite handsome, no doubt about that… but Mark is my type, though…"
Mark's ears became slightly red after hearing Risa's words.
"Idiot… This is no time for messing around; don't praise me so suddenly; I will lose my focus…"
His voice was rather quiet and had a hint of shyness in it. Risa knew that Mark was just being a 'tsundere,' so she didn't say anything in return and just smiled mischievously.
Azul, who saw the entire exchange, felt like questioning his life choices after seeing the two of them act so couple-like in the open.
Rena, on the other hand, completely ignored the words of Risa and spoke in a stern voice.
"A person with immense strength and good character will obviously be admired by all; I can already see the resemblance in you three too…"
"Well, you are students of a great individual after all… This much is expected…"
Rena clenched her magic staff and glanced around to scout the area.
"That miasmic rift is emitting an extremely irritating and unpleasant aura… but the main concern is something entirely different right now…"
Rena can sense that Jareth is keeping the demons and monsters in check while fighting that giant monstrosity to keep the spread of miasma in check.
But the main problem is the fight between Zion and Luche; she doesn't know who the two of them are, but they are both emitting extremely dangerous auras.
Even Rena can feel that she's not their opponent.
"That medal… D-Don't tell me! The Legendary Hero Zion Reid!? Such powerful light magic; it's beyond the level of a peak grade-1 mage!!"
"But who's that woman!? Are there really people who can keep up with the legendary hero's strength!? Her wood magic is incredibly strong!!"
While analyzing the battlefield, Rena didn't stop moving; she increased the intensity of her telekinesis around the three kids and rushed towards Jareth while keeping her distance from the battle between Zion and Luche.
While in combat, you don't just have to rush and attack; taking your surroundings into consideration is also very important.
As Rena reached near Jareth, she saw him make some hand signs and immediately understood what he was trying to convey.
[Throw the three towards me, take the hole in the ceiling, and go above; help your people evacuate…]
All war veterans know that in a battlefield the flow of information is extremely important; to make it as efficient as possible, you must use methods that take the least effort and relay information fast even from a distance.
Jareth knew that Rena was a grade-1 mage, as he had already sensed her aura, and by how she flew towards him while taking proper precautions, he figured out that she was a battle-hardened veteran.
Thus, he immediately gave her simple information and hints with his left hand while his other hand kept using the grimoire to attack.
For mages, it's common practice to add chants and make spells stronger, so it's better to refrain from using your mouth for other purposes in case you suddenly need to chant.
Therefore, it's preferable to use hand signs while keeping your mouth free, enabling you to chant at any moment.
This may seem like a very small and trifling matter, but in a battle between peak powerhouses, even this small detail can play an immense role.
Just a small mistake of not keeping your mouth free and not being able to chant for a few milliseconds can instantly put you at a disadvantage.
This is the exact reason why some people use provocation methods against mages.
Why do villains in games and novels talk so much?
By saying things that provoke the opponent and make them talk back to retort, you can cause them to forget about keeping their mouth free.
Thus, they will not be able to 'chant'.
This is a well-known battle tactic commonly employed by bandits and thugs to deal with mages and individuals who lose their composure when insulted.
This very small mistake is the reason why most newbie mages and spellcasters die and lose when fighting against bandits and thugs despite being more powerful than them.
Well, this tactic usually only works on newbies; veterans like Jareth and Zion are not so naïve as to fall for such mistakes; the same goes for Rena and Luche.
…
'He's quite cunning… Although I haven't met you before and I don't know what kind of person you are… My little sister showed trust in you, so I will leave this miasmic rift to you!'
'May the blessing of the eternal world tree be on your side!'
Rena glanced at the three and spoke in a calm tone,
"Don't scream; get ready for casting your magic…"
Without explaining much, Rena used her telekinesis magic at full power and threw the three of them towards Jareth at an extremely fast speed.
On the other hand, she changed her own flight direction and flew towards the hole in the ceiling in an instant.
*BOOOM!!*
The throwing power of the telekinesis used by a grade-1 mage is no joke; just that throw alone caused a massive sonic boom in the air, and the air pressure crushed many low-ranked monsters below.
"Wha!? She threw us away!?"
Azul was the one most surprised by that sudden change; Mark and Risa, on the other hand, were rather calm.
They have experienced sudden changes in situation like this before when they were with Jareth during the battle against Konda; they were pushed away with telekinesis at that time too.
Ignoring the fact that they were flying at an extremely high speed, the two of them immediately clenched their wands and became ready to cast spells.
Seeing the two, Azul also became determined!
Jareth didn't even look behind him and used his own telekinesis to catch the three and slow them down gradually.
It's impossible to give complicated battle commands to newbies like Mark and the others with just a few words or hand signs, so Jareth had to speak to them up close.
"We don't have time to dilly-dally, so just do what I say…"
"Mark, cast 'Berserk Stone Avalanche,' Risa, Cast 'Haunting Shadow' and push the stones in a way that they fall on this big guy and all the other monsters at the same time!"
"Azul! Once the two of them are done, Cast 'Spatial Suture' exactly 0.13 seconds after the two of them are done! Your aim must be that rift!"
Hearing Jareth's words, a look of nervousness appeared on the three of their faces.
Jareth's commands seemed simple, but they were extremely complicated and demanding.
'Berserk Stone Avalanche' itself has the word 'Berserk' in its name.
So once Mark uses it, the spell will go out of his control and suck up all his mana; even the attacks will flow in random directions, and it's impossible to control their trajectory.
'Haunting Shadow' on the other hand is a grade 6 shadow magic, which is extremely weak and not much useful in actual combat; all it can do is slightly deviate the trajectory of small things using their shadow.
But Jareth asked Risa to control the trajectory of all the stones that Mark would unleash.
He basically just asked her to not only be in sync with Mark when casting the spell but also help him control his spell.
The workload on her shoulders will be immense!
Moreover, if she interferes with Mark's spell in such a close way, even the magic circuit of the spell will get affected, and a small mistake can cause harm to Mark by magic deviation.
Unless Mark trusts Risa wholeheartedly, he can't allow her to interfere with his spell so closely.
If it were anyone else, this would have been impossible, but it's Mark and Risa; that's why it's possible.
The two of them are extremely talented, and they trust each other to the extreme.
They were surely nervous, but they immediately took action after hearing Jareth's words.
They both raised their wands towards the sky at the exact same moment and cast their magic in complete sync!
[Grade-4 Earth Magic: Full Release: Berserk Stone Avalanche!]
[Grade-6 Shadow Magic: Haunting Shadow: Overload!]
Their magic circles nearly overlapped yet didn't interfere with each other and remained in perfect sync.
The pressure on Mark and Risa increased by a hundredfold in an instant as they stared at the magic circles.
Mark released his mana in huge quantities, and Risa used her precise control over the shadows to control the falling stones.
Although it was difficult, the two of them managed to achieve what Jareth had ordered; if it had been someone else, it would have been more than ten times more difficult for them to pull off this feat.
The moment the stones blocked all the monsters for a few milliseconds, Jareth immediately patted Azul on the shoulder to calm him down.
Azul is just a newbie; after all, this is his first real battle where his life is on the line, and he's the most nervous in the group.
Yet his role in this battle is extremely important, so Jareth chose to cheer up the little guy by supporting him with his own reassuring hand.
Jareth's reassurance worked, and Azul managed to calm down his trembling body; he immediately aimed his wand and got ready to cast magic.
Seeing this scene, an evil smirk appeared on Jareth's face.
'Checkmate…'
