Chapter 74: The Challenge
Kael couldn't stand how bad Trey was at picking up girls, so he hurriedly left. It was like watching a snowball grow larger with every word Trey spoke—except this one was filled with sharp rocks and exploded at the end.
Right now, he was making his way back to where he'd left the miner's car.
But when he arrived at the spot, he wore a confused expression.
"I swear I left it here," Kael muttered, staring at the wall where the car had bumped into after parking. It was solid proof the miner's vehicle had definitely been there.
He looked around, and his eyes landed on a sign that read: No Parking.
"Oops," Kael said casually, clearly unfazed. He didn't care whether the car had been towed or not, though losing it was definitely going to make things inconvenient.
Shaking his head, he decided to take public transport back to Milan's house. But before he could cross the street, he heard the loud roar of an engine that instantly drew a crowd's attention.
Kael turned toward the sound and saw a black-and-white sports car screech to a halt—just inches from crashing into him.
The car let out fire from its exhaust before the engine settled down, almost like it had gone to sleep.
Like every other car enthusiast on the street, Kael's eyes widened in excitement. But before he could admire the sports car any further, the door opened and someone stepped out.
She had blue hair that only reached her shoulders, blue eyes that gleamed like the sky and sea, a straight nose, red lips, and soft white skin like marshmallow. She wore a black-and-blue battle suit that hugged her body tightly, highlighting her stunning curves that moved with every step.
Instantly, her beauty eclipsed even that of the sports car. Every eye—man or woman—locked onto her.
Kael narrowed his gaze as she approached and stopped in front of him.
"Hello," the woman greeted with a small smile.
"Carina, right?" Kael asked.
"Yes," Carina nodded. "I'm surprised you recognized me without my suit."
"With your beauty? Suit or no suit, people will recognize you," Kael said. Then he glanced at the sports car before shifting his eyes back to her. "So, what brings you here?"
"I had some business at the Level-Up Center. I actually caught a glimpse of you there… so I followed," Carina said openly, not bothering to lie.
"Oh? A stalker, huh?" Kael raised an eyebrow with a chuckle.
"No," Carina shook her head, her eyes turning serious. "I'm here because I'm intrigued by you."
"Are you about to confess? Just so you know, a lot of women have a crush on me," Kael said, puffing out his chest with pride.
"Hmph. Don't be so full of yourself," Carina scoffed. "You're a mysterious man. You modified that sniper rifle to wipe out a Primer group on your own. You can also fight bare-handed—and the Martial Arts you use can go toe-to-toe with Primers in their suits. That's what intrigues me."
"Is that so?" Kael raised an eyebrow. "And you're telling me this because…?"
"Let's fight," Carina challenged, her voice low and sharp, making it clear she wasn't giving him a choice. It was an order, not a request. "Just you and me. No weapons, no suits. Just bare hands. Pure Martial Arts."
"I get it—you're not giving me room to say no," Kael replied. Then he went quiet, staring at the blue-haired woman with thoughtful eyes. After a few seconds, he began walking away. "Sorry, but I have to refuse."
Carina froze for a moment, stunned. Then her face darkened.
In just a few steps, she appeared right in front of him.
"I want you to say that again," she said coldly, her gaze sharp as ice.
"I refuse," Kael said firmly, walking past her without hesitation.
Carina's face twitched with frustration and anger. She hadn't followed Kael all this way just for him to refuse her. Gritting her teeth, she turned and threw a punch at the back of his head.
"If you're not going to fight me, then I'll make you fight me!" Carina shouted, her fist hurtling toward him.
However, what happened next made her eyes widen. In the blink of an eye, Kael vanished—and before she knew it, her body was falling backward, her gaze fixed on the sky above.
"Did he…?" Carina muttered, shocked. But she quickly recovered. Instead of letting herself crash to the ground, she twisted her body midair, using the momentum to perform a series of back handsprings until she landed steadily on her feet.
Then she spun around, eyes scanning for Kael—but to her frustration, he was nowhere to be found.
"Show yours—!" she began to yell, but her words were cut off by a calm voice behind her.
"I'm here."
She spun around with a punch, but Kael had already vanished again. Her senses flared—hairs rising on the back of her neck—as she felt a sudden threat from the side.
She turned to her right—only to see a fist barreling toward her face.
Carina instinctively shut her eyes, bracing for impact. But after a few seconds, the blow never came. Confused, she slowly opened her eyes… and saw a fist hovering just inches from her face.
"You already lost," Kael said coldly, pulling his hand back. His expression was no longer playful. Gone was the smirk. In its place was a dark, emotionless look—as if he wasn't looking at a person, but a lifeless object.
The crowd that had gathered to watch was stunned. They hadn't expected a fight, let alone one that was so quick and intense. Words failed them. Silence fell as they watched, breath held.
Carina's body trembled at the sight of the icy look in the eyes of the man she had provoked. "I…" she stammered, not knowing what to say.
In her mind, she replayed everything. The moment she started falling—that was when she lost. No… from the moment she challenged Kael, she had already lost.
"Do you still want to fight?" Kael asked.
Carina frowned at the question, feeling the mockery in his tone. "Consider yourself lucky. I held back to match your meager strength. But it seems I misjudged you. You Leveled Up, didn't you? And you must have already used your Status Points."
"So your invitation's still on the table, huh?" Kael raised an eyebrow, instantly picking up on the meaning behind her words.
"Yes," Carina replied, adjusting her clothes—and her rapidly beating heart. "We will fight. I'll make sure of it."
"Just fight? What do I get out of it?" Kael asked.
"You're a mystery that intrigues me, and I won't stop until I figure you out. If you win, I might say a word or two to the New One Company about you. But if I win, you'll teach me everything you know about fighting and Martial Arts," Carina said, smirking. "But let me warn you now—I'm not going to hold back."
"Hmm." Kael rubbed his chin, deep in thought.
"That's an offer any dreamer Primer would kill for," Carina added. "So choose now."
"Or else? You going to ambush me again, but this time at full strength?" Kael asked, raising a brow.
Carina flushed with embarrassment. Even she knew what she did earlier was underhanded. "I got frustrated, that's all. But… I might consider it again if you refuse."
"That time of the month, huh?" Kael muttered, shaking his head—though deep inside, he was seriously considering the offer.
First Trey, and now Carina? These two craved knowledge to better themselves—though the former tried to get laid in the process, which didn't end well, while the latter… well, she was forceful and wanted to get what she wanted immediately.
But as Kael thought about it more, he realized it was normal. He'd done the same before.
He even challenged and fought the Red Primer just to learn the Drakorite Techniques. Kael had done the same with other Exo-Primevals, picking up a thing or two from them to increase his strength—though he really hated Red for making him suffer.
And that blabbering mouth of his, always spouting cringe-worthy lines about justice and the betterment of the universe… Just listening to him was already a challenge, and to suffer that long just to learn from him… Kael sighed as he reminisced about the past.
Back to the fight invitation—Kael was tempted by the condition, if he won.
She'll say a word to the New One about me? Kael thought, eyeing Carina with doubt and suspicion. That company has my Drive. They're my main target to get back my suit… Meeting them this early shouldn't be a problem.
Kael had wanted to investigate the Primer company, but during his research, he discovered their influence spanned the entire planet. The ones operating in this city—and any other city—were just branch offices.
And considering how valuable a Primeval Drive was, there was no way they'd store it in a local branch. Anyone with common sense would know they hid it at their headquarters, which was located on another continent.
Kael didn't have the influence or the strength—yet—to go there and reclaim what was his. Taking back the Primeval Drive would require time… and power.
But what if he used his enemies' resources to grow stronger? It would be like feeding a crocodile—one that might turn around and bite them at any moment.
Kael smiled as he finally made his decision.
