Chapter 13
[ 12th Chapter ]
Do you have a girlfriend?
People, as they live, hear various things and give various responses. This is called conversation, and all living beings repeat this process throughout their lives.
Among the things I’ve heard in my life, the question about whether I have a girlfriend felt like it had no consideration for me at all. It would have been better if they asked if I didn’t have one. Asking if I do makes me feel like they’re forcing me to say “I don’t actually have a girlfriend” directly.
Did you think there would be backlash if I said I didn’t have one?
It’s fine that those who have girlfriends or boyfriends ask such questions.
But why do they look at me with a self-assured gaze as if they have one, and with a deceitful attitude? Of course, it could be because I have a skewed personality, but what can I do about that feeling?
However, a few days ago, I reached a point where I could confidently say “Yes, I do.” without any stress.
Yubin, who shows a strong and dependable image as a Red of HunterKiller, turned out to have many cute sides. Unfortunately, she can’t confidently say “She’s my girlfriend” to Spacystro, but it’s still a relief to be able to answer yes.
What is my girlfriend doing now?
Thirty meters ahead, she was beating up her black-suited Spacystro comrades.
Why am I thirty meters away? That goes back five seconds into the past.
Today was a day of confrontation, and after giving an excuse of an outside job to Yubin, I arrived at the scene with Spacystro comrades.
For some reason, the five HunterKillers were already there, and I naturally saw Red wearing a red suit.
Even though we are lovers, she doesn’t know I’m me over there. And balls are balls, and life is life. How can someone who can’t distinguish between them smoothly participate in social life?
With such determination, I drew my sword and rushed towards Red, getting punched in the face and flying thirty meters away.
That was just five seconds ago.
“Feels like you put more force into it today. Did something good happen?”
We exchanged texts until the morning, but nothing particularly uplifting happened. We talked about what she was doing, if she ate, etc. So, I don’t think the reason for my mood was me.
“Ouch!”
One of my teammates flew over after receiving a kick from Red.
“Are you alive?”
Although my combat abilities were only at this level, I never thought my teammate, who was physically tough, was dead.
“Would you rather be dead? Ouch, my stomach hurts.”
Since staying at a motel, we haven’t had any intimate moments. It’s tiring, and we each have our responsibilities, so we should focus on those first. I’m not a monkey, and I’m not someone who chases pleasure endlessly once tasted.
“I’ll figure out a way today!”
Now, I’m in the middle of a confrontation, and it’s more appropriate to be the Spacystro version of myself than as a boyfriend. I picked up the sword from the floor and ran towards Red again.
Red, who was kicking teammates and swinging a sword, was getting closer. “Show me your weakness!” I truly thought while swinging my sword, and what I saw next was the sky.
“What?”
I was sent flying into the air by Red’s low kick to my chin. It hurt so much that I almost wished I’d fainted. I could feel my teammates watching me in the air.
I’ve become a person with a proper girlfriend now. I can be considered one of the common people in the world.
But unfortunately, I’m also one of the rare people who gets hit by a girlfriend’s sincere punches and kicks.
“Ugh!”
I fell to the ground, and as usual, our defeat was the result of today’s confrontation.
“Gasp, sob! Ugh!”
Like every other day, Luche was crying in the passenger seat of the van filled with people. While I usually found it pitiful when Luche cried after losing, today I felt even more pitiful.
“Is your jaw okay?”
“Are you crazy? How can I tell if you’re okay with a helmet on?”
As I asked my teammate while wearing a helmet, I received a reaction as if they could see my expression through the helmet.
“…Seems like something’s definitely wrong.”
It’s not normal to ask if someone’s face is okay with a helmet on, so another teammate genuinely checked on me.
“It’s fine. Just joking, just joking.”
Even though it was a dangerous moment, the joke didn’t quite land, but we managed to drive back to headquarters in a friendly atmosphere.
The job for regular soldiers like me and my peers is simply to change clothes and go home after returning to headquarters.
As usual, I came to the changing room, took off my helmet, and put it in the cabinet.
“Doesn’t look like you’re injured.”
My teammate, who was changing clothes next to me, looked at my chin after taking off my helmet. With a slight sense of concern, I touched my chin. There was some pain, but there didn’t seem to be any visible injuries.
“Lucky. If I rest for a day or two, it should heal.”
“Red was really aggressive today.”
Even while changing clothes, we always chatted. Although we lost every day, we tried to stay positive in our conversations to avoid getting used to losing.
Most of our conversations revolve around the confrontations, so we often talk about the day’s events.
“Red is always aggressive.”
Red’s presence was always strong, and none of us on the team had ever dealt with her before. Even Luche couldn’t handle Red’s presence during their skirmishes.
“But wasn’t Luche in the elite unit before?”
“Yeah. She was an ace in space battles.”
“Is she unable to use her full strength on Earth?”
Before coming to Earth, working on a spaceship, I knew a bit about those who went into space battles in fighter jets. Since supplies could sometimes come from different ships in space, it was good to remember the main units.
I first met Luche from a list at that time. Of course, I met her in person when she came to the Seoul Branch.
When one teammate commented that Luche seemed lacking in ability, all the other teammates’ eyes turned to him. Naturally, I was among them.
“Hey, don’t talk about Luche like that! She works hard!”
“No, I know! I was just saying, why are you reacting like that?”
“I can’t forgive anyone who badmouths Luche, even if they’re a teammate!”
“Not badmouthing, just—”
“Kill him!” “Right! Kill him!”
The teammates clashed, and the one who spoke grabbed the other in an armbar, starting a wrestling match.
While watching, I counted out loud.
“10! 9! 8!”
“Give up! Give up!”
The one caught in the armbar slapped the floor with his palm, but we weren’t going to let him off.
“There’s no giving up!”
Despite the unexpected outcome, the speaker had to endure everyone’s backslaps before being forgiven, and we left one by one with a sense of relief.
After changing clothes, I thought about heading home, and there stood Luche in civilian clothes.
“Did the report end?”
Her eyes were red from crying, suggesting she had been crying while reporting.
The branch manager, who had criticized Luche for consecutive losses a few days ago, had bought her a meal to apologize, but seeing her lose again made her cry.
I could almost see the branch manager comforting her.
“Yeah, my jaw is fine.”
My voice was still trembling as I worried about the confrontation where I got hit in the jaw and flew next to Luche. From my perspective, I was more concerned about Luche crying every time we lost, which might lead to depression.
“She’s not hurt, just a little sore, but it’ll heal soon.”
“That’s a relief. We’ll change surveillance soon.”
“Huh?”
I couldn’t follow the sudden statement. I had to think twice about what I had just heard.
“Red isn’t producing results.”
“When will you change it?”
“I haven’t decided yet, but when do you think would be good?”
Even if I were to suggest a time, honestly, I’d prefer to stay as we are. It feels more comfortable that way. Should I reveal everything about my relationship with Yubin now? No, that would be too foolish.
“This week… no, next week. Let’s try it.”
A regular soldier like me is in a position where I have to follow orders without question, even if given notice tomorrow. It was comforting to hear this, and it was Luche’s way of showing care by allowing me to choose the period.
In return for her care, the only thing I could do was report on the current situation.
But I couldn’t bring myself to report. The progress was in my relationship with Yubin, not in uncovering anything about HunterKiller’s internal affairs.
“…Come to think of it, the atmosphere within HunterKiller seems quite poor.”
What I learned while investigating as Red was just the atmosphere within HunterKiller, which she pretended to know about as a different job.
“Huh? How did you know?”
“I didn’t see it while monitoring, it’s just a guess. I’ll check it out next week.”
“Yeah, let me know if you find out anything.”
Luche sniffled and patted my shoulder before going to her office.
Suddenly, the period for surveilling Yubin was reduced to about a week, leading to various thoughts.
“Where will I go when the surveillance changes?”
Since the target changed, I needed to move and change my residence. Stopping in front of the office, Luche turned around.
“Where? For now, I need to stay here. There’s no support for moving expenses either.”
If I stay in the same place, I don’t have to worry much.
“Really?”
“Don’t spend your money moving. I’ll check if support is available.”
“For now, just check. I can decide about moving later.”
Luche nodded and went into her office, and I headed home with a light heart.
At the same time, on the third floor of the Earth Defense Union Seoul Branch Headquarters.
“♪”
Red was humming an unknown melody while packing her belongings. Her teammates were looking at her.
“Did something good happen today?”
“No? Not really—”
Teammates were surprised by the unusual tone and manner, wondering if there was something wrong with Red.
“You were amazing in the fight today too.”
Pink, while fixing her pink hair in front of a mirror, recalled the confrontation earlier.
“Really?”
“Definitely different from usual.”
Yellow, who had just showered and returned from the adjacent shower room, noticed the unusual atmosphere among the teammates but didn’t say anything and just changed clothes.
“Leaving early today?”
“……”
When Yellow asked Red, who was changing clothes, she only nodded silently.
“Sometimes, I wish you’d answer properly.”
Seeing Red smiling, Yellow momentarily thought she had made a big mistake and looked at the teammates. They shrugged their shoulders, indicating they also didn’t understand why Red was acting this way. Red packed her things quickly, unlike usual.
“I’m leaving first.”
Red, who was always the last to leave, finished preparing to leave first today.
“To Team Leader?”
“I asked Blue to do it.”
In response to Pink’s question, Red, who had entrusted the report to Blue, got on the elevator that had just arrived and left. The remaining teammates couldn’t hide their puzzled expressions.
“Why is she acting like this today? Green, did you hear anything?”
“No, not really… but maybe something good happened.”
After changing clothes, Yellow left the changing room, thinking that Pink and Green would be in a good mood for a day. They decided to take it lightly.
When I finally got home, I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket. It was a call from Yubin.
“Hello?”
“Brother!”
The energetic voice made me involuntarily pull the phone away from my ear.
“Yes, what’s up?”
“Are you at home?”
“Yes, I’ll be there soon.”
“Then, I’ll drop by your place first before coming over.”
“Okay… Wait, what?”
Did everyone plan to surprise me today? I can’t understand why these surprising moments keep happening.
“In an hour!”
Yubin hung up abruptly, and I held onto my sanity, thinking about the current state of the room.
“Crap.”
All Spacystro-related items were at headquarters. At home, I only had personal items, so there was no risk of being caught.
Generally, a single man living alone leaves laundry unfolded and does not sort waste properly, only throwing it out when it overflows. I was such a typical bachelor, and I knew my room was in a mess.
Having a girlfriend visit is welcome. It’s sudden, but it’s certainly a good thing. But can I clean up the mess before she arrives in an hour?
I ran at full speed toward my nearly empty home.
