Eternally : A Promise

The promise we made under that star

The little boy kept looking at the girl in front of him. She was so beautiful. She reminded him of a fairy from the fairy tales his mother would tell him about. She looked so happy as she was playing with a little dog. Her smile was so bright, it could take away all the sadness from the world. The boy wanted to approach her, to talk to her. But he was too shy. He thought she might not like someone like him. Afterall no one liked him at his school either, no one wanted to be his friend. He thought he was just not as great as others.

His mother noticed him looking at the little girl. She wanted him to go talk to her, but she knew he wouldn't. Ever since his father died, he had become so quiet. He rarely smiled or talked with someone. He didn't ask for toys or anything like the other kids of his age would, he was always in his own little space. His mother did not like this at all and was really worried about him. She wanted him to be happy. She wanted to see him smile again. So even though she knew he wouldn't, she still asked him to go talk to the girl.

"Yeonjun ah, you should go and talk to her." She said. The little boy looked a little startled as he didn't know his mother was watching him. He just shook his head and looked down, fiddling with his fingers.

Suddenly he heard footsteps approching him. He looked up to find that the little girl was standing in front of him, with the same smile on her face. He immideately turned red.

"Hello, I am Ji Ah! Do you want to play with me?" She said with enthusiasm.

Yeonjun didn't say anything, and just kept fiddling with his fingers. His mother nudged him a little and nodded her head at him, encouraging him to go. Yeonjun finally looked up and nodded his head in agreement. Ji Ah looked really happy at this and clapped her hands. Yeonjun got up to go with her and Ji Ah grabbed his hands happily. Yeonjun only turned more red at this and started walking with her.

"You didn't tell me your name." Ji Ah said.

"Yeonjun" He finally said. The girl nodded her head.

"That's a really pretty name" She said, smiling at him.

"Thank you" He said, trying to avoid her gaze.

"We are going to play with snowy!" Ji Ah said. The boy looked confused at this.

"Who is snowy?" He asked, confused. Ji Ah widened her eyes a little.

"Oh I am sorry, I forgot to tell you. Snowy is this little dog's name, I thought it would suit him as he is snow like white. I just found him today. He was here at the carnival, he looked alone. So I thought about giving him some company" Ji Ah said, as they approached snowy.

"Oh, that's why you were playing with him. Are you here alone? It's scary to be alone at such a big carnival." Yeonjun said, looking worried.

"No, I came with my parents. They are at a nearby shop, they said I could play with snowy here" Ji Ah explained.

As they finally went to Snowy, the little white dog wiggled his tail and started running around them. He jumped onto Yeonjun and started to lick his face, causing him to fall down. Both the kids started to giggle and started to play with the little dog.

Yeonjun's mother, watching all of this from a distance, had a bright smile on her face. She had a few tears in her eyes, seeing her son finally laugh after such a long time. She silently thanked the little girl, for making her son smile once again. She went to a candy shop that was nearby, to get some candies for the kids.

"Mom I want ice cream!" Kai whined to his mother.

"We are getting there Ning, we will have to reach the ice cream parlour to get you ice cream, and you have to walk for that. So get up" She said.

"No! I don't want to get up! Tell the ice cream parlour to come here!" He said.

"We can't do that ning, we have to go there. The more time you waste here, the more late it will be for ice cream" His mother said. She was getting tired at this point.

"Fine! We will go there" The little boy huffed and got up. His mother smiled at him.

"That's a good boy now" She said, ruffling his hair.

They soon reached the parlour and his mother asked him to choose the flavour he wanted. The boy chose mint chocolate and asked the parlour lady to hurry up. The lady laughed at his eagerness, while his mother scolded him for that.

While they were waiting for the ice cream, another boy approached the shop with his mother. He was very calm, compared to Kai.

"Hello, I am Soobin" The boy said, introducing himself to Kai.

"I am Huening Kai" Kai said, smiling at him. The boy smiled back. Both mothers saw the exchange and smiled at each other and started talking. Both boys got their ice cream and kai started to jump around.

"You are so loud" Soobin said. Kai just poked out his tongue at him and started eating his ice cream. Soobin's eyes landed on Kai's ice cream and his expressions immediately turned into disgust.

"You like this cold toothpaste?" He asked with disgust.

"Hey don't talk about mint choco like that!" Kai argued.

"Its just plain toothpaste. I hate it. I thought we would be friends, but doesn't seem like it" Soobin said. Kai's eyes widened at this.

"No! We are friends! You can't break our friendship just because I like mint choco" Kai argued. Both the boys started bickering and their mothers just laughed, watching them.

"I don't think this is a good idea Taehyun" Beomgyu said, as the two boys walked away from their parents.

"You are just a scaredy cat Beomie, we are just going in this field. It's right next to the ferris wheel and we have told our mom and dad." Taehyun said, grabbing Beomgyu's hand.

"Still, we shouldn't be going on our own. What if something is there?" Beomgyu said, clearly looking scared.

Taehyun just rolled his eyes at his best friend's scardeyness. "Like what? A ghost? Please Beomie, nothing is there. We are just going there to sit and play for a while. This carnival is too loud"

"Then why did you come here? Carnivals are meant to be loud" Beomgyu said.

"Because my parents and you dragged me here. Now shut up and let's go" Taehyun said.

"It's so quiet here" Beomgyu said, as they arrived at the field.

"And that's exactly why we are here" Taehyun said, sitting on the ground and Beomgyu joined him.

"The stars look so pretty, right?" Beomgyu asked. Taehyun nodded his head in agreement. Suddenly they heard a giggle from behind them.

"Did you hear that?" Beomgyu asked Taehyun. Taehyun nodded and they started to look around if someone else was there. Another giggle came.

"Hyunie I told you not to come here. Let's go from here, I am scared" Beomgyu said getting up and making Taehyun stand up as well.

"Let's at least check what it is" Taehyun suggested, but Beomgyu just shook his head in disagreement. A bark came from behind them, they quickly turned their head and saw two bright eyes.

"Please hyunie, lets go!" Beomgyu said, on the brink of tears. Seeing Beomgyu on the verge of crying, Taehyun finally agreed. But as they were about to leave, something jumped onto Beomgyu, making him scream and lose his balance. He felt something licking his face and heard Taehyun laughing. He finally looked up, only to see an adorable little puppy lying on top of him.

"Snowy! Come here" He heard a girl's voice. He saw a girl and a boy of his age, approching them.

"I am so sorry, I don't know why he ran away all of a sudden" The girl said, picking the dog up and helping Beomgyu up as well.

"It's ok, he is easily scared anyways" Taehyun said, looking at Beomgyu.

"Hey you were scared as well! Don't lie!" Beomgyu argued.

"Don't argue guys. I am Ji Ah by the way and this is Yeonjun" Ji Ah said, pointing at the boy next to her. Taehyun and Beomgyu nodded their heads.

"I am Taehyun and this is Beomgyu" Taehyun said, introducing themeselves.

"So it were you two giggling then. We were scared for nothing" Beomgyu said.

"Oh I am so sorry! We didn't mean to scare you, we were just playing" Ji Ah apologised.

"What are you guys doing here alone though? It could be dangerous at night" Yeonjun asked.

"We could ask you the same thing" Taehyun said, only to be smacked in the head by Beomgyu.

"Don't be rude hyunie. It was actually his idea, because he wanted to be in a quiet place. We asked our parents for permission and they are not that far away from us" Beomgyu explained, while Taehyun just kept glaring at him.

"I see. Our parents are not that far away from us either" Yeonjun said.

"But mint choco is really good!" They heard someone say, and saw two boys coming in their direction.

"No! It's toothpaste. Wait, let's just ask them" One of them said, looking at them.

"Hey guys, do you think mint choco is good?" He asked.

"Eww no, I hate it" Beomgyu said and Taehyun agreed as well.

"See! I told you!" The boy said.

"But we didn't hear these two's answer" The other one said, pointing at Ji Ah and Yeonjun.

"I think mint choco is great, I love it" Yeonjun said.

"It's not my favourite, but I don't hate it. I think it's good" Ji Ah said.

"See! I told you mint choco is great!" The boy said.

"I will never agree. By the way I am Soobin and this is Huening Kai" The first boy said.

"Huening kai? That's such a unique name. I am Ji Ah by the way and this is Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun and Snowy" Ji Ah said.

"Thank you" Kai said, looking proud.

"Oh my God, a puppy! Can I hold him please?" Soobin asked with excitement. Ji ah agreed and handed him snowy.

"I see you really like dogs" Ji ah said, noticing how happy Soobin looked.

"Yes, I love them!" Soobin exclaimed.

"Ji ah! it's time to go back!" Ji ah's mother said, approaching the little kids.

"Yes mom. And also these are my new friends. This is Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, Soobin and Huening Kai" Ji Ah said, introducing everyone.

"It's nice to meet you kids, you are welcome at our house anytime you want to meet Ji Ah" Ji Ah's mother said, smiling at the kids.

"We will love to aunty" Yeonjun said.

"Mom, can I take snowy with me? Please? I promise I will take care of him." Ji ah asked her mom, pointing at the little puppy.

"Yes you can, Ji ah. But you will have to take proper care of him" Her mom said.

"Promise!" Ji ah said and took the puppy from Soobin. She noticed Soobin'a sadness at that.

"You can come play with him whenever you want to." Ji ah told him and Soobin's eyes lit up at that. She told them all where she lived and they also told her their address and all the six kids decided to visit each other often.

Yeonjun saw as Ji ah walked away with her mom and smiled to himself. She really had made him feel happy that night.

"Guys look, that's such a pretty star!" Kai said, pointing at a big star in the sky.

"Wow, its so big and bright compared to the other ones! It must be special" Beomgyu said and the other boys nodded in agreement.

"I wonder what it's like being special. I want to be special too, but I am not even normal." Yeonjun said. The other boys frowned at hearing that.

"What do you mean you are not normal?" Soobin asked.

"Well, no one wants to be my friend. I always sit alone because no one wants to sit with me. I really have no one except for my mom" Yeonjun said, looking down.

The boys felt sad and shocked at the same time. To them, Yeonjun seemed great.

"I don't know what you are talking about, you seem really cool to me" Kai said and the others agreed. Yeonjun's eyes lit up at that.

"Really?" He asked.

"Yes and don't you say you have no friends. You have us and also Ji ah." Beomgyu said smiling. Yeonjun became really happy at hearing that and nodded his head.

"And that's why, I have a really great idea" Soobin said.

"What idea?" The other four asked.

"Well, we are going to make a promise under this special star" He said getting up, and asking the others to do the same.

"What kind of promise?" Taehyun asked, as they all stood up under the star.

"A promise that we will stay together, till eternity" Soobin said, as they all stood in a circle and placed their hands on top of each others.

"Till eternity!" They all exclaimed with joy.

And the star shined even more brighter at that.
