Chapter 17: The Catalyst
The air outside the Nexus was frigid, laced with the scent of pine and rain-soaked earth. Zayn and Erynn emerged into the shadowy embrace of a dense forest, their escape shrouded by the heavy fog curling between the ancient trees. The moon hung high, casting pale beams that danced across the wet ground, but the night's stillness felt deceptive.
Zayn leaned against a tree, catching his breath, his body still trembling from his clash with Lila. His skin rippled involuntarily, patches of it darkening and receding like shadows beneath his control.
"Keep moving," Erynn urged, their voice sharp yet laced with a hint of unease. The creature's form shimmered faintly in the moonlight, its chitinous armor catching the glow. "The Accord doesn't give up easily."
Zayn nodded but hesitated. His mind raced with questions, and despite his exhaustion, he couldn't shake his curiosity about his peculiar companion. "Why did you help me, really?"
Erynn's glowing eyes flicked toward him. "I told you. Freedom."
"That's it?" Zayn pressed. "You've been trapped for years, and you're not even a little curious about what's happening out here?"
Erynn chuckled, a low, unsettling sound. "Oh, I'm curious. But curiosity won't keep us alive."
Before Zayn could respond, the distant sound of barking erupted, sharp and insistent.
"Tracker hounds," Erynn said grimly. "Run."
Zayn's heart pounded as they raced through the forest, the hounds' howls growing louder with every passing moment. His legs burned, and his body threatened to betray him, his form flickering between stability and chaos.
Erynn moved with an eerie grace, their elongated limbs propelling them effortlessly across the uneven terrain. "This way!" they called, veering sharply to the left.
Zayn followed, nearly tripping over a gnarled root. His thoughts spiraled—what was the Accord's endgame? Why was Lila so confident in letting him go? And most importantly, how much longer could he keep running before his body gave out completely?
They burst into a clearing, the moonlight revealing a crumbling stone structure covered in ivy and moss. It looked ancient, its jagged edges worn smooth by time, but something about it felt... wrong.
"What is this place?" Zayn asked, panting.
Erynn hesitated, their glowing eyes narrowing. "I don't know. But it's shelter."
The sound of the hounds was closer now, their baying echoing through the trees. Without another word, Zayn and Erynn ducked inside.
The interior was cold and damp, the air thick with the scent of mildew. Strange symbols were etched into the walls, their meanings lost to time. Zayn ran his fingers over them, feeling an odd hum beneath his fingertips.
"This isn't just an old ruin," he muttered.
"Brilliant deduction," Erynn said dryly. "Now focus. We need to block the entrance."
Zayn turned toward the doorway, his body instinctively shifting. His arms lengthened, merging into a thick, sinewy mass that stretched across the opening. It wasn't pretty, but it would hold.
For a moment, the only sounds were their ragged breaths and the distant howls of the hounds.
Then, something shifted in the darkness.
A low, guttural growl emanated from deeper within the ruins, freezing Zayn in place. Erynn stiffened, their armor-like plates bristling.
"What was that?" Zayn whispered.
Erynn didn't answer. Instead, they took a cautious step forward, their elongated fingers flexing into razor-sharp claws.
The growl came again, louder this time, followed by the scrape of claws against stone.
"Not alone," Erynn said, their voice barely audible.
Zayn's mind raced. Had they stumbled into another Accord trap? Or was this something else entirely? He readied himself, his body rippling as he prepared to shift into whatever form might save them.
The shadows ahead seemed to move, coalescing into a hulking figure that towered over them. Its eyes glowed a sickly green, and its body was a grotesque amalgamation of flesh and metal, its limbs bristling with jagged, rusted spikes.
"What... the hell is that?" Zayn breathed.
Erynn's voice was tight. "A relic. A guardian, maybe. Either way, it's hostile."
The creature lunged, faster than Zayn expected for something so massive. Erynn darted to the side, their body twisting unnaturally as they slashed at the beast's flank. Sparks flew as their claws met metal, but the creature barely flinched.
Zayn moved instinctively, his arms morphing into jagged blades. He swung at the creature, aiming for its exposed flesh, but it countered with a swipe of its spiked arm, sending him crashing into the wall.
"Focus, Zayn!" Erynn snapped, dodging another attack.
Zayn shook off the impact, his anger flaring. His body shifted again, his legs thickening and rooting into the ground for stability. With a roar, he launched himself at the creature, driving his blade-like arms into its chest.
The creature howled, a sound that reverberated through the ruins, but it didn't fall. Instead, it lashed out wildly, forcing Zayn and Erynn to retreat.
"This thing's not going down easy," Zayn said through gritted teeth.
"Then we need to outsmart it," Erynn replied.
As the battle raged, Zayn noticed the symbols on the walls beginning to glow faintly, their light pulsing in rhythm with the creature's movements. An idea formed in his mind, though it was a long shot.
"The symbols!" he shouted. "They're connected to it somehow!"
Erynn spared a glance at the glowing marks, their expression unreadable. "Then destroy them!"
Zayn nodded, shifting his arms into long, whip-like appendages. He lashed out at the walls, striking the symbols with all his strength. Each hit sent a shockwave through the room, causing the creature to falter.
Erynn seized the opportunity, leaping onto the beast's back and driving their claws into its neck. The creature thrashed wildly, but Erynn held on, tearing at its flesh with relentless precision.
Finally, with one last, desperate strike, Zayn shattered the largest symbol. The creature let out an ear-piercing screech before collapsing in a heap of metal and flesh, its green eyes flickering out.
The ruins fell silent once more, save for the sound of Zayn and Erynn's heavy breathing.
"Well," Erynn said, climbing off the creature's corpse, "that was fun."
Zayn shot them a tired glare. "Your idea of fun sucks."
Erynn smirked, but their expression quickly turned serious. "This place... it's not just some ruin. The Accord might have ties to it. We need to figure out what they were doing here."
Zayn nodded, though his body ached with every movement. "Agreed. But first, let's get some answers."
He knelt beside the creature, examining its lifeless form. His hand brushed against a strange, metallic device embedded in its chest. As he pulled it free, a holographic projection flared to life, displaying a map with several marked locations.
Erynn leaned closer, their glowing eyes narrowing. "That's... a Nexus network map. The Accord has more facilities like the one we just escaped."
Zayn's stomach sank. "Great. Just what I needed—more nightmares."
But as he studied the map, something caught his eye: one of the marked locations wasn't far from where they were.
Erynn noticed it too. "Looks like our next destination."
Zayn sighed. "This just keeps getting better."
As they prepared to leave the ruins, Zayn couldn't shake the feeling that the night's events were only the beginning of something far more dangerous—and far more personal.
