Chapter 16: The Forgotten Laboratory
Zayn woke with a sharp intake of breath, his body aching and his mind clouded. He blinked against the sterile white light overhead, his senses sluggish. A faint hum reverberated through the air, accompanied by the occasional beep of nearby machines.
When his vision finally cleared, he realized he was lying on a cold metal table, his wrists and ankles strapped down by thick restraints. The room around him was pristine yet ominous, lined with glass tanks filled with swirling, luminescent fluids. Shadowy shapes floated inside, their forms grotesque and unfamiliar.
"Ah, you're awake."
The voice was cold and clinical, sending a shiver down Zayn's spine. He turned his head as far as he could, spotting Strix standing at the edge of the room. Beside them was Lila, her fiery red hair glowing under the harsh light. She leaned casually against the wall, inspecting her nails as though this were just another boring day at the office.
"Where am I?" Zayn croaked, his throat dry and his voice hoarse.
Strix tilted their head slightly, their expression—or lack thereof—unchanged. "You're in a facility we call the Nexus. Consider it the beating heart of the Obsidian Accord's research division."
Lila snorted. "Fancy way of saying it's a freak factory."
Strix shot her a disapproving look, but she merely shrugged.
"Why am I here?" Zayn demanded, struggling against his restraints. The metal didn't budge, no matter how hard he pulled.
"You're here because you're an anomaly," Strix replied. "A living puzzle we intend to solve."
Zayn glared at them. "You won't get anything out of me."
"Oh, we don't need your cooperation," Strix said, their tone chilling. "We just need your body."
As Strix turned to leave, Lila followed, giving Zayn a wink before disappearing through the door. The moment they were gone, Zayn focused on his restraints, willing his flesh to shift and change. His arm rippled as he forced it to stretch, his skin thinning and his bones shifting. The transformation was excruciating, but he managed to slip his wrist free.
Just as he worked on the second restraint, a soft voice echoed through the room.
"Don't."
Zayn froze, his head snapping toward the source. One of the glass tanks had begun to glow faintly, and the figure inside stirred. It was humanoid but unnervingly alien, its body covered in patches of chitin and shimmering scales. Its eyes opened, glowing a bright, unnatural blue.
"You'll trigger the alarms," the creature said, its voice resonating inside Zayn's head.
"What... what are you?" Zayn asked, his voice shaking.
The creature's lips curled into a faint smile. "Like you, I am a prisoner. But unlike you, I've been here for far longer."
Zayn hesitated. "Do you know how to get out?"
The creature's smile widened. "Perhaps. But first, I need something from you."
The creature, who introduced itself as Erynn, explained that it was a failed experiment, an early attempt by the Accord to create shapeshifters. Unlike Zayn, whose abilities seemed natural, Erynn's powers were unstable, causing it immense pain.
"They've kept me alive for years, studying me," Erynn said bitterly. "But I've learned a few things in that time. Like how to override their security systems."
"And what do you want in return?" Zayn asked cautiously.
"Freedom," Erynn replied simply. "If you release me, I'll guide you out of here."
Zayn hesitated. Trusting a creature like Erynn was a gamble, but he didn't have many options. He nodded. "Deal."
Erynn guided Zayn to a control panel near its tank. Following the creature's instructions, Zayn disabled the containment field, releasing Erynn from its glass prison. The fluid inside spilled out, and Erynn stepped forward, its movements graceful despite its monstrous appearance.
The moment Erynn was free, alarms blared throughout the facility. Zayn cursed under his breath.
"You said you could disable the alarms!"
"I said I could guide you out," Erynn corrected, unbothered by the chaos. "Follow me."
The two of them moved quickly through the labyrinthine halls of the Nexus. Erynn seemed to know the layout well, leading Zayn away from patrols and toward hidden passageways.
As they ran, Zayn couldn't help but notice Erynn's strange abilities. The creature's body shifted fluidly, its limbs elongating and retracting as needed. At one point, it scaled a wall like a spider, effortlessly avoiding a group of guards.
"Impressive," Zayn muttered.
Erynn glanced back at him, its glowing eyes narrowing. "Flattery won't save you if you fall behind."
Their escape took a turn for the worse when they reached the central atrium. Dozens of guards were stationed there, armed to the teeth and ready for a fight.
"We'll never get through that," Zayn said, his heart sinking.
Erynn smiled, revealing sharp, jagged teeth. "Leave them to me."
Before Zayn could protest, Erynn leapt into the fray, its body shifting and contorting in horrifying ways. The guards opened fire, but Erynn moved too quickly, tearing through their ranks with brutal efficiency.
Zayn took the opportunity to slip past the chaos, heading for the exit.
Just as he reached the outer doors, a familiar figure stepped into his path.
"Leaving so soon?" Lila said, her smirk returning.
Zayn clenched his fists, his body rippling with energy. "Out of my way."
Lila laughed. "Oh, I don't think so. You're way too much fun to let go."
The fight was intense, Lila's abilities proving to be as formidable as Zayn's. She manipulated the air around her, creating shockwaves that sent Zayn flying. But Zayn was learning, adapting to her attacks with each blow.
Just when it seemed like Zayn might gain the upper hand, Lila suddenly stopped, tilting her head as though listening to something.
"Interesting," she murmured. Then, with a mischievous grin, she stepped back. "I'll let you go this time. But don't get too comfortable—I'll be seeing you again."
Before Zayn could respond, Lila disappeared in a burst of wind, leaving him alone in the empty corridor.
Erynn caught up with him moments later, its body covered in blood and ichor.
"Did you kill her?" Erynn asked.
Zayn shook his head. "She let me go."
Erynn's eyes narrowed. "Strange."
Zayn didn't have time to dwell on it. Together, they exited the Nexus, disappearing into the night.
But as they fled, Zayn couldn't shake the feeling that Lila's parting words were more than just a threat.
