Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Shadows of Betrayal
The time for the meeting with Seo had finally arrived. Jiho's team moved carefully through the underground parking garage of an abandoned high-rise where the rendezvous was set. The dim fluorescent lights flickered ominously, casting eerie shadows on the cracked walls.
Jiho signaled for the others to halt. His senses were heightened, and the faint whispers of his shadow magic alerted him to the presence of others nearby. He turned to Haeun and Sanghoon, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Stay sharp. Seo won't come alone."
Haeun nodded, gripping her weapon tightly, while Sanghoon adjusted the strap of his firearm. They moved in sync, their steps silent as they approached the designated meeting point.
The Confrontation
The Broker was already waiting near a rusted freight elevator, his nervous energy palpable. Beside him stood two of Seo's enforcers, their eyes scanning the area with predatory intent. Seo himself was nowhere to be seen, but Jiho knew better than to assume he wasn't close by.
"You're late," the Broker hissed, his eyes darting nervously between Jiho and the enforcers.
Jiho ignored the comment and stepped forward, his presence commanding. "Where's Seo?"
One of the enforcers smirked. "He doesn't waste his time on low-level pests like you."
Jiho's shadows rippled, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop. "Funny. He seemed to care a lot when he sent you running after me like dogs."
The enforcer's smirk faltered, but before he could respond, the freight elevator dinged. The doors creaked open, revealing Seo Gwan, flanked by two more enforcers and a silver briefcase in his hand.
"Enough theatrics," Seo said as he stepped out. His sharp suit and calm demeanor radiated authority, but his eyes betrayed a cold calculation. "Let's get this over with."
Jiho's gaze locked onto Seo, his mind racing as he assessed the situation. The enforcers were armed, and Seo's confidence suggested he had another layer of protection. Jiho's shadows quivered, eager for a command.
The Proposal
Seo set the briefcase down on a nearby crate and opened it, revealing several fragments of Nexus cores glowing faintly. "You've caused me a lot of trouble, Kang Jiho," he began. "But I'm willing to overlook your transgressions if you agree to work for me."
Haeun stiffened, and Sanghoon let out a low growl of disbelief. Jiho, however, remained unfazed.
"And why would I ever do that?" Jiho asked, his tone dripping with disdain.
Seo's smile was chilling. "Because you're smart enough to know that fighting me is a losing battle. With your abilities, you'd be invaluable to my operation. Together, we could control the Nexus, the dungeons, and beyond."
Jiho chuckled darkly. "You really think I'd sell my soul for some shiny rocks?"
Seo's expression hardened. "I think you're a man who values survival. And if you refuse…" He gestured subtly, and the enforcers raised their weapons. "Well, let's just say your survival won't be an option."
The Trap Unfolds
Before Jiho could respond, Haeun stepped forward, her eyes blazing. "You're the one who won't survive tonight, Seo."
Seo tilted his head, amused. "And what makes you think you have the upper hand?"
Jiho's shadows suddenly surged, enveloping the room in darkness. The enforcers shouted in panic as their vision was obscured, their movements disoriented. Jiho's voice echoed through the void.
"Because I don't walk into a fight unprepared."
A flash of light sliced through the darkness as Sanghoon opened fire, targeting the enforcers with precision. Haeun moved swiftly, her blade cutting through the chaos. Jiho's shadows wrapped around Seo, pinning him against the wall.
Seo struggled, his composure finally cracking. "You think this changes anything? I have more power than you can imagine!"
Jiho stepped closer, his expression cold. "Power means nothing if you don't know how to use it."
With a flick of his wrist, the shadows tightened, forcing Seo to drop the briefcase. Jiho snatched it up, the glow of the Nexus core fragments illuminating his sharp features.
An Unexpected Twist
Just as Jiho prepared to deal the final blow, a deafening explosion rocked the parking garage. The force threw everyone off balance, and debris rained down from the ceiling.
Through the smoke and chaos, a new group emerged—masked figures armed with advanced weaponry. Their leader, a tall figure cloaked in black, stepped forward.
"Step away from Seo," the figure commanded, their voice distorted by a modulator.
Jiho's shadows flared defensively as he sized up the newcomers. "And who are you supposed to be?"
The figure didn't answer. Instead, they raised a hand, and their subordinates opened fire, forcing Jiho and his team to retreat.
Seo, now free from Jiho's grasp, smirked despite his injuries. "You'll regret this, Kang Jiho. You've just made an enemy you can't escape."
Jiho clenched his fists, his shadows swirling around him protectively. "We'll see about that."
As the masked group escorted Seo out, Jiho and his team regrouped, their breaths heavy and their bodies bruised.
"This isn't over," Jiho said, his voice low but resolute. "Not by a long shot."
