Chapter 50: Depths of grief: Liberated by dreams (49)
Every heartbeat was a fresh ache, each breath a reminder of the emptiness left behind. She felt hollow, like a shell of herself, stripped of purpose and direction, utterly isolated in her grief. As she lay beside Bone, it was as though she was stranded in a vast, lifeless desert, with nothing around but barren sand. The weight of hopelessness pressed against her chest. Starfania heard footsteps approaching, and a wave of apprehension washed over her. Not giving a care in the world, as she simply just wanted to be left alone. Suddenly, a firm hand gripped her shoulder, bringing her back to the present. Slowly opening her eyes that were still blurry from the tear in them. Turning her head to Aeron looking at her worryingly and behind him stood Violet and Drogo. His voice cut through the silence, " Starfania, what happened? "
She recounted the grim events to Aeron, her voice wavering with every word, the blood on her knuckle now falling softly. Starfania kept stealing glances at Bone's lifeless body, wanting the pain to just go away. Aeron gently grabbed her hand and was drawing a circle on her knuckle. Not caring very much about the blood that littered those soft hands. Leaning her head to his chest, giving her a place to let another wave of them pour out. Drogo and Violet looked on from a distance, their sympathetic expression softening the edge of despair. In a fleeting, profound exchange of glances, they realize that none of them were alone in grief.
Drogo, with his majestic and towering presence, advances towards Aeron, his massive frame casting a shadow. With a gentle nudge towards his human, Drogo conveyed his frustration, releasing a mighty roar that echoed through the air. Aeron flinched at the sudden sound, his gaze snapping upward to meet Drogo eye's. Aeron nodded slowly, realization dawning as he grasped the gravity of Drogo's silent message. Slowly moving Starfania a few feet away as she was still crying into him, not paying attention to what was happening. His once-proud ear lowered in a rare display of sadness. With a purposeful turn, Drogo moved closer, his every step carrying a sober weight.
Pausing beside Bone's motionless figure, he unleashed a blazing stream of fire, igniting the air with an intensity that was both mesmerizing and horrifying. The flames roared to life, swallowing Bone's form whole as his body slowly dissipated. Aeron stood frozen, caught in a turbulent clash of emotions, as he stared at Drogo. Their eyes met, the look between them a complex blend of terror and a strange sense of understanding. The raw power of the scene jolted Starfania out of her grief, and was watching in disbelief, and struggling to comprehend what was unfolding before her.
" Why? " she asked Aeron quietly while removing herself from Aeron's chest to fully watch what was happening. " Why is Drogo doing this? "
Aeron paused, gathering his thoughts.
" He's paying tribute, " he murmured, his tone revenant. " That's their way. "
As their eyes met, the truth of Drogo's action became clear, filling the air between them with a new sense of wonder and understanding. Aeron's voice softened, carrying a deep respect for their tradition, " Let's remember, there's so much about them we don't know. "
They exchanged a quiet, knowing look, fully aware of the significance of this moment. Awe and wonder welled up within them, as though they got a glimpse of their tradition. Starfania felt a smile tug at her lips as she simply watched in astonishment.
" I suppose you're right, " she replied, anticipation stirring within her as she reconsiders what else was to come.
