Chapter 49: Depths of grief: Liberated by dreams (48)
Sitting alone on the park bench, she replayed the day's events in her mind, a lingering warmth from Daniel's smile still stirring within her. Despite her original plans to visit Aeron, she knows for certain this was definitely worth it. As the sun continued to rise even higher, a subtle chill settled in the air. Starfania looked up and felt something liquid drop on her face. Rubbing her cheeks and seeing blood on it as more began to fall. She closed her eyes, hoping it was all in her head and when she opened them again, it was still a sunny day. So she simply brushed off her mind, not being able to keep up.
This is when she decided she needed to head straight to Bone's Cave and make sure this wasn't all connected to him. Yet, as she neared the cave entrance, an inexplicable unease settled over her. The air felt thick, charged with an odd stillness. A shiver crept down her spine, hesitating to enter as she wrestled with the thoughts in her head. As she touched the wall, a string of lights started flowing through the cave almost like a guide. Finally, gathering her courage, she followed the lights, calling his name, her voice echoing faintly against the cold stone walls. Dim shadows flickered from extinguished torches, casting eerie shapes that seemed to follow her every move. Venturing further the unsettling silence and icy tension sending a wave of apprehension through her as she continues her search, hoping to find Bone within the shadows.
The light trail was slowly becoming dimmer with each step she took and suddenly a noise broke the silence. When she looked up, she saw a crow perch on one of the torch handles. As it's ruffle it wings before flying to the center of the room, cawing as it flies in a circle before flying up into the air and vanishing. As the sight before her shattered her composure, leaving her emotion raw and exposed. Blood was covering the room along with black chards. The cave itself looks like it could no longer hold on to the once fortified place. In the center of it all lay Bone, her cherished companion, his once brilliant scales now dulled. Starfania felt like she was watching her mother's death all over again. Bone was the last thing she had that left of her that connected with her, but now he was gone.
Starfania's chest tightened as she slowly rubbed her chest, falling to the ground, letting the grief in once more. Slowly crawling towards him and grabbing onto him like he was a lifeline. Tears streamed down her face as she whispered to him, desperate to believe that somehow, some way, he would respond- and that this was all in her head. However, the way her chest tightened its hold on her and even rubbing it was not helping ease the pain. With trembling hands, she placed her palm over his heart. But the silence of his chest confirmed the terrible truth. Slowly closing his eyes as she murmured a desperate prayer, a plea to the heavens for a miracle she knew was impossible.
An indescribable sorrow welled up within her, like an unstoppable tide, drowning her in the reality of loss. The pain tore through her, ripping a raw cry from her throat that echoed through the cave, the sound of her anguish filling the emptiness - " Bone! "
Overwhelmed, she pounded the unyielding ground beside him, each strike making her knuckle bleed, almost clawing at her soul. It felt as if she were trapped in a nightmare, a cycle of disbelief and heartache that she couldn't escape. She curled up next to him and buried her face in her hands. Tears flowed freely as she couldn't shake the painful thought that this was somehow her fault. She felt she should have been here, standing by his side.
The mystery of who had done this only deepened her pain, filling her with helpless anger and fear. She stayed there, huddled in despair, wishing desperately for the impossible- to rewind time, to undo the tragedy, to see him alive and beside her once more. She knows that Bone will now be upstairs with her mother like the good old days. But her heart still aches, this hollow reminder of what she had lost today. In the depth of her despair, she longed desperately to find the one responsible, to demand answers and bring them to justice. But she felt lost, spinning in a storm of bewilderment, helpless to know where to begin. As she sat there staring at the ground, letting the blood from her knuckle seep into the ground.
She sat there, clutching Bone's lifeless form. She whispered brokenly, " I'm so sorry. None of this would've happened if only I'd been here. Why does death have to be so cruel, so heart-wrenching? "
Starfania's voice cracked under the weight of the words, echoing hollowly in the emptiness. Rising from her grief, balling her knuckles as the red liquid fell to the ground, and shouted into the void, " You've already taken my mother and brother! Now you take Bone! What more do you want? What have I done to deserve such torment? Why won't you answer me? "
Her pleas faded into silence, swallowed by the surrounding darkness. She was left with the distant whisper of the wind in reply, a cold reminder of how alone she truly was. The realization crashed over her with finality- she never knew why, nor could she ever change what happened. A fresh wave of sorrow flooded through her as her tears fell unchecked.
