Ch. 13
Chapter 13: Conflict
The two girls exchanged a glance.
Clearly, neither was willing to yield, so they both turned their heads away, refusing to look at each other again.
“Even so, I still think what Yu Mo said makes a lot of sense…”
Lin You spoke thoughtfully,
“Back then, I was completely scared stiff. By the time I reacted, there wasn’t enough time. I could only hurriedly glance at the game rules. I didn’t even have time to copy them down…”
Lin You spread his hands helplessly as he spoke.
“So I also think that, in that situation, it was unlikely for Lu Feng to think that much. Maybe he really just copied down the rules he could see.”
“Alright, alright. Actually, none of us can prove our identities right now. Since that’s the case, let’s not dwell on this matter anymore.”
Lu Feng knew that continuing the discussion would be meaningless and would only deepen suspicion between them.
So, he quickly steered the topic away.
“Actually, the rule that I find the hardest to understand is still the fourth one—what does it mean by ‘During the game, only the evil spirit can kill players’?”
“Isn’t that easy to understand? It means other people can’t kill players.” Lin You answered without hesitation.
Hearing Lin You’s explanation, Lu Feng shook his head,
“But have you considered, how would it count if ‘someone kills themselves’?”
As soon as he said this, the other three froze, and their expressions subtly changed.
Seeing that they had understood his point, Lu Feng continued,
“That’s why I can’t understand this rule—it’s written too vaguely. It only says, ‘only the evil spirit can kill players,’ but it doesn’t mention at all what happens if someone kills a player. What would happen to the one who got killed? And what if it was suicide?”
At this point, Lu Feng stopped.
His own words had just reminded him of something—something he had overlooked earlier.
But since he couldn’t be sure of the identities of the others, for safety’s sake, he dared not reveal his thoughts without reservation.
That’s right, it wasn’t that he didn’t trust them.
It was just in case.
Lu Feng said silently in his heart.
“For now, that’s all I can think of. As for the rest, we’ll talk about it later. Let’s go back and check the situation first.”
To be honest, Lu Feng was worried.
Before the four of them left, everything had already descended into chaos.
What it looked like now was hard to say.
The others nodded at Lu Feng’s suggestion, and the four of them returned together to the entrance of the old mansion.
However, the chaotic crowd was gone.
The mansion’s doors stood wide open, and it seemed everyone else had already gone inside.
Lu Feng, who had expected the situation to be disastrous, was surprised.
Given how things were before, unless someone strong had stepped up, the chaos couldn’t have possibly stopped.
But Zhang Tong, the class monitor, clearly didn’t have that ability.
Thinking of this, Lu Feng had already braced himself for the worst.
Carrying his doubts, Lu Feng entered the old mansion with the others.
A wave of rotting stench immediately rushed into their noses, choking them into a fit of coughing.
The hall was a complete wreck.
Broken, decayed furniture and fixtures piled in the corners.
The huge crystal chandelier above was draped in spiderwebs.
The walls on all sides had peeled so badly that they were unrecognizable, leaving behind ugly mottled patches of white and color.
Even so, one could still faintly glimpse the grandeur this mansion must have boasted a hundred years ago.
The mansion had three floors in total.
On both sides of the hall stood wooden staircases leading upstairs.
The staircases looked fairly intact and seemed safe enough to walk on.
Just as Lu Feng entered the hall, he spotted someone standing there.
When he walked closer, he realized it was Zhang Tong.
Zhang Tong stood there, dazed and lifeless.
It wasn’t until Lu Feng walked right up to him that he snapped back, staring at Lu Feng in confusion.
“Zhang Tong? What’s wrong with you? Why are you standing here all alone?”
At Lu Feng’s question, Zhang Tong gave a bitter smile and told him what had happened after they left—
As it turned out, after Lu Feng and the others fled in haste, Zhang Tong had tried several times to calm the chaos, but it was useless.
Instead, it was Wu Fan, who often opposed him, that stepped forward.
Wu Fan immediately roared,
“Shut the hell up! What are you crying for? What’s all this wailing supposed to do? I’ll tell you this—I sure as hell don’t want to die here! If anyone wants to die, go find a rope and die somewhere else!”
With Wu Fan’s shout, the chaotic scene began to settle.
The terrified crowd, as if they had finally found a backbone, all turned their eyes to him.
Wu Fan then added some comforting words, temporarily easing their fear.
After that, under Wu Fan’s lead, the somewhat calmed group entered the mansion.
They split into several teams to explore the place, but Zhang Tong, whom Wu Fan disliked the most, was ostracized and left alone under the pretext of “keeping watch.”
After hearing Zhang Tong’s account, Lu Feng couldn’t help but sigh.
In such chaos, it was good that someone was willing to step up—but to think that person was Wu Fan… He really didn’t know whether that was good or bad.
Just as Lu Feng was about to say something, Lin You cut in ahead of him,
“It’s fine, it’s fine. We just happen to be four people here. Why don’t you—”
Before he could finish, two sharp jabs suddenly landed on his stomach.
Lin You let out a “wah” and clutched his belly.
Just as he looked up to see who had hit him, he saw Yu Mo glaring at him, while Liuli shook her head slightly.
Lin You instantly realized what was going on and snapped his mouth shut, turning his gaze instead toward Lu Feng.
In the short span of just over ten minutes, this newly-formed four-person group had already begun treating Lu Feng as the core of their team.
As for Zhang Tong, Lu Feng didn’t have a bad impression of him.
This class monitor always spoke kindly to everyone and never lost his temper, so he was well-liked in class.
But at the same time, that likability created a problem—he lacked authority.
On normal days, that was fine.
After all, most of the class weren’t the type to stir up trouble.
But in the current situation, as class monitor, Zhang Tong clearly wasn’t up to par.
Lu Feng wasn’t heartless, but with everyone’s identity still unknown, he really didn’t want to add another uncertain factor to their group.
He was just about to refuse, but when the words reached his lips, he found himself unable to say them.
Looking at Zhang Tong’s dazed and broken expression, Lu Feng found it hard to steel himself.
After struggling several times in his heart, Lu Feng finally gritted his teeth and sighed inwardly in resignation.
He walked over to Zhang Tong, patted his shoulder, and said,
“We just happen to be four people. You can join us.”
After all, the chance of being chosen as an evil spirit follower was only 5 out of 36—it was still pretty low… Lu Feng could only comfort himself this way.
Zhang Tong froze, then lifted his head to look at Lu Feng.
Seeing the confirmation in his eyes, gratitude flickered in Zhang Tong’s gaze.
“Thank you…”
Just then, the groups who had gone exploring inside began returning to the hall one after another, with Wu Fan among them.
The moment he came back and saw Zhang Tong with Lu Feng’s group, Wu Fan sneered disdainfully.
Standing arrogantly on the staircase, he looked down at them and questioned,
“Where the hell did you all run off to? Do you have any idea how much effort we spent trying to find you?”
Hearing this, Lu Feng frowned, while Lin You’s temper flared up as he immediately retorted,
“Who asked you to come find us?”
