Chapter 93: Paying a Visit
Lying in bed, Xu Yulan blushed uncontrollably when she heard Liu Ergou humming a little tune. The song he was humming was hardly a proper one. Although she wanted to stop him, she felt so weak that even speaking was a strain.
Liu Ergou, meanwhile, planned to go to the kitchen to make a bowl of brown sugar water for his sister-in-law. She had sweated so much during the massage and needed to rehydrate. He went to the kitchen and quickly whipped up a bowl, which he then brought to Xu Yulan. Sipping the warm drink he had made for her, she felt incredibly happy.
Just as Xu Yulan was about to say something, a sudden car horn blared from outside, interrupting her.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Hearing the incessant honking, Xu Yulan couldn't help but groan quietly. She said nothing, however, and patiently waited for it to end. To her surprise, the honking showed no sign of stopping; it just kept blaring on and on. This was enough to annoy even the normally good-tempered Xu Yulan.
Liu Ergou had already grown tired of the noise, and when he saw his sister-in-law's upset expression, he quickly left the room. Stepping into the courtyard, he couldn't help but yell, "Who's out there?! Why are you honking like that? What do you want?!"
As Liu Ergou shouted, the honking immediately stopped. Then, a man's voice came from outside the gate.
"Ah, Ergou, my boy! I finally found your house! That was quite a challenge! Please forgive the honking. I didn't mean to keep it going, but I pressed the horn too hard and it got stuck!"
Liu Ergou was taken aback by the familiar voice. It took him a few seconds to place it.
This is Fu Ya's father!
With this realization, he hurried to open the gate. Sure enough, the visitor was Fu Yan, who had come alone this time. As soon as the gate opened, Fu Yan eagerly stepped forward and grabbed Liu Ergou's hand.
"Ah, Ergou, my boy, I finally found you! I can't believe you live in a place like this!"
Hearing this, Liu Ergou frowned. What did he mean by that?
Fu Yan's gaze was sharp. He caught Liu Ergou's expression and quickly added, "Don't get me wrong. I didn't mean anything by that. I just never imagined a Divine Doctor as skilled as you would be living in a small village! It's just so surprising!"
Hearing Fu Yan's explanation, Liu Ergou finally spoke. "What's so surprising? My home is here, so of course, I live here. I have to ask, what brings you all the way out here?"
Hearing Liu Ergou's polite but distant tone, Fu Yan's heart sank. He knew Liu Ergou was still holding a grudge over their last encounter. After a moment's thought, Fu Yan finally dared to speak. "Oh, my boy, there's no need to be so formal! Don't keep using 'sir'—it sounds so distant. My surname is Fu and my given name is Yan. If you don't mind, just call me Uncle Fu!"
Upon hearing the name Fu Yan, Liu Ergou almost burst out laughing. The name reminded him of something else. In fact, it sounded almost identical to a certain medical condition.
Stifling a laugh, Liu Ergou said, "Alright, Uncle Fu. So, was there something you needed from me? If not, I should get back. I have other things to attend to."
As Liu Ergou spoke, he turned to leave, making Fu Yan frantic. He hurriedly reached out and grabbed Liu Ergou's arm. In a fawning tone, he said, "Now, now, my boy, a great man like you has many things on his mind, I'm sure! Don't you remember? You were going to treat my illness last time, but you had to leave because of an emergency. Surely you recall that?"
Of course, Liu Ergou hadn't forgotten. He was deliberately playing dumb. But now that Fu Yan had brought it up, he couldn't keep up the act.
"Oh!" Liu Ergou feigned a look of sudden realization. "So that's what this is about! You've come for me to treat your illness, then, right, Uncle?"
Fu Yan had been waiting for those very words. As soon as Liu Ergou said them, he nodded vigorously. "Exactly, exactly! That's why I'm here!" he said, starting to pull Liu Ergou toward his car.
"I know I was wrong last time, my boy," Fu Yan said as they walked. "I shouldn't have doubted you! After you left, I rushed to the hospital for a full check-up.
"When the results came back, they matched what you said exactly! Not a single detail was off!
"Ah, but let's not talk about that here. This isn't the right place. Come on, come with me! I've already prepared a banquet in town. We're just waiting for you!"
By the time he finished speaking, Fu Yan had already pulled Liu Ergou to the car. Looking at Fu Yan's expectant face, Liu Ergou didn't agree but instead started making excuses.
"No, thank you. We can do dinner some other time. My sister-in-law is waiting at home, and I need to cook for her. I appreciate the offer, Uncle, but I have to get back." With that, Liu Ergou turned to leave.
Seeing Liu Ergou about to leave, Fu Yan grew frantic.
My recovery depends on him! If he could diagnose my illness with a single glance, he can definitely cure me!
With that thought, Fu Yan sighed and quickly stepped forward to block Liu Ergou's path. "My boy, I was wrong last time," he said with a pained look of apology. "I shouldn't have doubted you. But try to see it from my perspective. If you were in my shoes, would you have believed it right away?
"Besides, as the town mayor, I can't afford to be careless. The slightest misstep could lead to utter disaster!"
Liu Ergou, who had been about to leave, stopped and turned to look at Fu Yan in surprise. "Hm? Uncle, did you say you're the town mayor?"
