Chapter 71 Very Serious
Liu Ergou naturally understood Fu Ya's meaning, but it was his first time experiencing such a grand affair, and he felt a little out of his element. After barely managing to mingle with the crowd, he hastily bid Fu Ya farewell and left.
However, just as Liu Ergou stepped out of the hotel, he was surprised to find Fu Ya's father and Old Tang already waiting for him. Before he could even speak, Old Tang stepped forward.
"Young man, rest assured, I'm not here to pressure you into selling the Hundred Grass Sachet recipe. I just wanted to have a private chat with you," he said. "We can talk about art and things of that nature. If you're interested, come with me. Of course, if you're not, I'll have someone send you home." With that, he stood there quietly, awaiting Liu Ergou's decision.
Looking at the two men before him, Liu Ergou hesitated for a moment. Instead of making a choice, he asked, "Uh, about how long until I can head back?"
Old Tang burst into laughter. "Hahaha, you can leave whenever you want!"
Hearing this, Liu Ergou nodded, agreeing to the chat. He followed the two men out the back of the hotel and into a private room.
No sooner had the three of them sat down than Old Tang asked eagerly, "Young man, may I ask which lineage your Hundred Grass Sachet belongs to?"
The question took Liu Ergou completely by surprise. Lineages? What's all this about?
Seeing the confused look on Liu Ergou's face, Old Tang patiently explained, "I mentioned before that the recipe for the Hundred Grass Sachet has been lost for a century. The sachet has two distinct lineages: one for repelling insects and the other for strengthening the body. Which one did you learn?"
Liu Ergou was completely dumbfounded. He hadn't heard of either. What is he even talking about? After a moment's thought, he said tentatively, "Well, my Hundred Grass Sachet can both repel insects and strengthen the body. Does that mean it has both lineages?"
However, to Liu Ergou's surprise, his words made Old Tang's expression immediately turn sour. "Don't spout nonsense at such a young age," Old Tang said, his face displeased.
This left Liu Ergou even more confused. Why the sudden change? What just happened?
Just then, Old Tang spoke again. "Hmph! For someone so young, you're so presumptuous! How could it possibly have both? The fragrance of your sachet suggests it belongs to the insect-repelling lineage. Why won't you tell the truth?"
Old Tang's constant talk of one lineage or another had Liu Ergou utterly baffled. This is all too confusing. He scratched his head and said, "I don't know what you're talking about with lineages. All I know is how mine is made!"
Liu Ergou then proceeded to list a few of the ingredients in his Hundred Grass Sachet's formula. Who would have thought that as soon as he did, Old Tang's expression would transform yet again? This change was even faster than the face-changing of a Sichuan opera performer.
"Ah! This... this!" Old Tang was so excited he was speechless.
Fu Ya's father, who didn't quite understand the topic, simply sat by and listened quietly. However, seeing their reactions, he knew that what Liu Ergou possessed was no simple skill. And it seems my daughter is very interested in him, which means... The thought made his heart pound with excitement. I might finally have grandchildren!
However, as Fu Ya's father was secretly rejoicing, the conversation between Liu Ergou and Old Tang suddenly shifted to him.
"By the way, young man," Old Tang said, "it seems your heritage is quite orthodox. Can you tell what's wrong with the man beside me?"
Fu Ya's father, still relishing his happy thoughts, froze on the spot. Their topic jumped way too quickly! How did it land on me? He said nothing, simply sitting there and watching.
Liu Ergou turned to look at Fu Ya's father, sizing him up before speaking. "Do you want the truth or a lie?"
Before Old Tang could reply, Fu Ya's father spoke up, "The truth, of course!"
Liu Ergou nodded. "The truth is, you have a terminal illness and don't have long to live."
Fu Ya's father was floored. What? What happened? How do I suddenly have a terminal illness? He turned a bewildered face to Old Tang. However, Old Tang's response left him completely and utterly stunned.
"Ah, Old Fu, the young man is right," Old Tang said gravely. "You do have a terminal illness."
As the words sank in, Fu Ya's father froze. Several minutes passed before he could speak. "But, Old Tang, that's not what you told me before. Didn't you say I..."
Old Tang cut him off before he could finish. "I was trying to comfort you before, to keep your spirits up and prevent your condition from worsening. I had planned to treat you slowly, turning to Western medicine if necessary. But now that I've heard of the long-lost method for making the Hundred Grass Sachet, I believe this young man must be skilled. I want him to give it a try. Just in case..."
Hearing this, Fu Ya's father swallowed hard. How did I get a terminal illness without even realizing it? And I had no idea... This... this... For a moment, he didn't know what to say and could only sit there, stunned.
Several more minutes passed before he finally spoke. When he did, his voice sounded as if he had aged a decade in those few short minutes. "I... I think... I'd like to go to the hospital for a check-up first. Is that okay?"
Old Tang readily agreed. "I understand. It's normal for you not to trust me completely. Go get it checked out. Once you have a confirmed diagnosis, we can have this young man treat you. How does that sound?"
Fu Ya's father was about to nod in agreement, but Liu Ergou, sitting beside them, bluntly stated the diagnosis.
"The situation is not optimistic. If I'm not mistaken, it's pancreatic... cancer..."
At these words, both Fu Ya's father and Old Tang looked as if they had been struck by lightning. Disbelief was written all over their faces. Pancreatic cancer was the king of all cancers. Even a multimillionaire who contracted it had a high chance of not surviving.
