Chapter 461: Breaking Free
My file is encrypted; there's no way anyone could access it so easily, Han Jiajia thought. She's clearly trying to bait me.
Realizing this, she immediately shouted, "Boss Lady, I'm really innocent! I'm not Officer Han! You've really got it all wrong!"
However, Han Jiajia's desperate words only made the heavily made-up woman laugh coldly.
"Hehehe! Officer Han, stop quibbling. Let me tell you the truth, it wasn't your profile that exposed you!"
"It was your insurance!"
Han Jiajia was puzzled. What's wrong with my insurance?
She couldn't figure it out, but she decided to keep pleading her innocence.
But before Han Jiajia could open her mouth again, the heavily made-up woman continued, "We were going to enroll you in the 'Five Insurances and One Fund,' but when we tried, we discovered that someone had already paid it for you! Do you know who that was?"
These words stunned Han Jiajia. She never imagined she would actually be exposed, let alone for such a ridiculous reason. All because of the social insurance program.
Seeing Han Jiajia frozen in place, the heavily made-up woman added, "At first, we all thought it was a misunderstanding! But when this kid called out to you today, I knew it wasn't! Who would've thought you'd be hiding so deep! You..."
The woman's words were cut short by a burst of loud laughter.
"Hahaha, that's hilarious! That's got to be the funniest joke I've heard all year. An undercover cop exposed by her social insurance! Hahaha, I'll be laughing about this for a year!"
Hearing the laughter, the heavily made-up woman started laughing along.
"Yes, it really is—"
She stopped abruptly, a sudden realization dawning on her. At this moment, there were only three people in the room: herself, the fake Han Jiajia, and the person who was drugged and unconscious. How could there be a fourth person?
With this thought, the heavily made-up woman snapped her head toward the source of the sound.
She saw that the laughter came from the bound Liu Ergou.
He was laughing so hard he was completely oblivious to the woman's stare.
After a good long laugh, Liu Ergou finally stopped, still savoring the joke.
Then he asked Han Jiajia, "So, Officer Han, all your running around… it wasn't just for this, was it? And what's the deal with this group? Can you give me a quick rundown?"
However, the reply came not from Han Jiajia, but from the woman's astonished shriek.
"How is that possible!" the woman screamed. "You drank half a bottle of that strong liquor, and I drugged it too! How can you still be conscious? This is impossible!"
Liu Ergou didn't even bother to look at her. He just kept prodding Han Jiajia.
"Come on, Officer Han, what's going on? Spit it out!"
Urged on by Liu Ergou, Han Jiajia finally snapped out of her daze.
"There have been a series of disappearances in the town and the city recently," she explained hurriedly. "Over a dozen people have gone missing—all able-bodied young men, plus a few women.
"After some investigation, we zeroed in on this woman." At this, Han Jiajia gestured toward her with her lips. "So, I went undercover. That's the gist of it."
Liu Ergou's eyes lit up with understanding. Just as he was about to say something, the heavily made-up woman interrupted their conversation.
"The two of you sure are confident. You still have the nerve to chat at a time like this! My people will be here soon. Let's see if you're still in the mood for conversation then!"
Liu Ergou, however, continued to ignore her, instead resuming his chat with Han Jiajia.
"So that's what's happening. Say, Officer Han, do you have a good plan to get us out of here? If you don't, I'm just going to act on my own."
Han Jiajia was startled. "Liu Ergou, don't be reckless!" she said quickly. "These people are extremely vicious. If you act rashly, you could very well…"
Before Han Jiajia could finish, the woman grabbed a wad of paper and stuffed it into her mouth. She then picked up her phone, made a quick call to hurry someone along, and hung up.
Staring at them both, the woman sneered, "Your good days are over. My people will be here in two minutes!"
No sooner had she spoken than the sound of footsteps echoed from outside.
Soon, three men squeezed into the abandoned room.
The woman immediately hurried over to one of them and said obsequiously, "Boss, you're here! Look at that man over there—he's well-built, perfect for the mines! And this woman is an undercover cop. What should we do with her?"
The man she called Boss considered this for a moment.
Just as he was about to speak, Liu Ergou cut in, "Mining? What kind of mining? Don't tell me you mean underground."
The man looked at Liu Ergou, slightly taken aback, then smirked. "It's exactly what you think."
He turned away, dismissing him.
But Liu Ergou wasn't finished. "You've got to be kidding me. What century is this? You're still using forced human labor for mining? And kidnapping people for it? You guys are way too brazen!"
Liu Ergou's words instantly infuriated the three newcomers.
Han Jiajia watched, anxious but helpless, her mouth still gagged. All she could do was make muffled sounds of protest.
The Boss shot a look at Liu Ergou and ordered the two men beside him, "Teach him a lesson. Shut him up. Better yet, cut out his tongue."
Receiving their orders, the two men cracked their knuckles and advanced on Liu Ergou, ready to get rough.
Liu Ergou saw them coming and knew he couldn't hold back any longer.
If I hesitate, my tongue will be gone, he thought.
With that, he stopped hesitating. He flexed his arms, preparing to snap the hemp ropes binding him.
With a surge of strength from Liu Ergou, there was a loud SNAP.
The hemp ropes binding him had been torn apart by his brute force.
Now free, Liu Ergou shot to his feet and drove a fist into each of the two men who had just reached him.
