Chapter 38: Cornfield
Walking down a road in Fengzhu Village, Liu Ergou couldn't stop thinking about what had just happened.
If my big brother hadn't come back, would I have already... with my sister-in-law?
The thought sent a surge of frustration through him. My big brother's timing couldn't have been worse. Couldn't he have come back a day earlier or a day later?! He just had to come back today.
Lost in thought, Liu Ergou unconsciously wandered into a vast cornfield. Looking at the newly grown corn stalks, some of his anger began to dissipate.
This corn is growing so well. This year is bound to be a bountiful one. And if it's a bountiful year...
Before Liu Ergou could finish the thought, a bright light suddenly flashed from within the pitch-black cornfield. The light appeared abruptly and vanished just as quickly, disappearing without a trace in the blink of an eye. The sudden flash jolted Liu Ergou out of his contemplation, and he couldn't help but look in the direction it came from.
Before he could get a closer look, a woman's voice carried over.
"Are you out of your mind? Daring to light a lamp in the cornfield at night!"
"Are you trying to let everyone know we're here?"
"You might not have any shame, but I do!"
Following the woman's voice, a man replied, "What's there to be afraid of? It's the middle of the night. Who has nothing better to do than come to a cornfield? Relax, no one will find out!"
"Come on, let's go over there. There's a clearing!"
"We haven't done it in days, and I'm about to burst from holding it in. Hurry up, you slut!"
His words were followed by a rustling sound.
Acting on instinct, Liu Ergou dived into a nearby ditch, pressing himself flat against the ground. Just then, two figures—one tall, one short—walked past and entered another part of the cornfield.
Seeing this, Liu Ergou knew at once. What else could a lone man and woman be doing out here in the middle of the night besides having a tryst?
The only thing that puzzled him was that the man's voice and silhouette seemed oddly familiar, though he couldn't quite place them at that moment.
Driven by curiosity, Liu Ergou carefully followed them into the cornfield. The corn was now tall enough to hide him as long as he crouched down. Soon, he caught up to them. By the faint moonlight, Liu Ergou finally recognized the pair.
When he saw who they were, he was so shocked his eyes almost popped out of his head.
The man was an old bachelor from the village, an idler who had never held a proper job, which wasn't surprising. But this old bachelor, seeing that Liu Ergou's family consisted of just him and his sister-in-law, had gotten greedy and forcibly seized two acres of their land. Although Liu Ergou managed to get it back through sheer persistence, the two had been enemies ever since, even if their feud remained unspoken.
It didn't surprise Liu Ergou too much that the man was the old bachelor. It was when he got a clear look at the woman that he was truly shocked.
The woman was none other than Widow Zhou! Yes, the very same Widow Zhou who was so famously protective of her chastity.
Seeing them together, Liu Ergou's eyes widened in disbelief. He had thought seeing Widow Zhou with the village chief, Liu Jingming, was shocking enough. He never imagined he would now catch her with this old bachelor. For a moment, Liu Ergou was at a complete loss for words. It was simply too astonishing, too stunning.
As Liu Ergou reeled from the shock, the old bachelor and Widow Zhou were already getting busy amidst the cornstalks. He impatiently fumbled with Widow Zhou's clothes, but they were tied so tightly that he couldn't undo them, making him curse in frustration.
"Dammit, you slut, why'd you tie your clothes so tight! Don't you want me to do you?"
Hearing him, Widow Zhou shot back irritably, "Pah! My clothes are always tied this tight!"
"If you don't have the strength to undo them, then get lost! I'll find someone else!"
"Stop wasting my time!"
Chastised, the old bachelor immediately fell silent and focused on the buttons. Finally, through his relentless efforts, the clothes came undone. Seeing this, the old bachelor let out a ragged breath.
"Finally got it!"
He then reached out and roughly tugged on Widow Zhou's belt. Pulled like that, Widow Zhou snapped, "You brute, can't you be a little gentler? You're hurting me!"
Her words only made the old bachelor more excited.
"Heh heh heh, isn't this just how you like it? I may not have much else, but I've got plenty of strength!"
"Heh heh heh!"
Watching them from his hiding spot among the stalks, Liu Ergou couldn't help but shiver. How is this so... disgusting?
He was also a bit curious. How on earth did these two end up together? Liu Jingming I can understand, since he's the village chief. With power in his hands, he can get whatever he wants. But this old bachelor? He has nothing but a few tiled-roof houses. Other than that, he's completely alone.
However, just as Liu Ergou was pondering this, the old bachelor and Widow Zhou started talking again.
"Heh heh heh, I'm coming in. You'd better hold on tight!"
Widow Zhou replied, "I can hold on. I'm just worried you can't!"
"Hmph, don't you forget what you promised me!"
The old bachelor immediately declared, "Don't worry, my word is as good as gold! I won't go back on it!"
With that said, the two began their "deep exchange," their foul words echoing throughout the cornfield.
Listening to them, the fire in Liu Ergou, which had just subsided, flared up again, burning hotter than before. This gave him a throbbing headache. He already had a fiery temperament to begin with. After practicing the Body Tempering Art, that fire felt like inexhaustible magma inside a volcano, never once going out. He felt like a perpetual motion machine that could never stop.
Looking at the live show unfolding before him, Liu Ergou let out a cold sneer.
What they do is their business and has nothing to do with me. However... this old bachelor once stole my family's land. Now that he's fallen right into my hands, there's no way I'm letting him off the hook tonight.
