Chapter 118: Can't We Always?!
The Liu Ergou from before had looked like a bumpkin fresh from the countryside, with nothing remarkable about him. But the man standing before her now gave Bai Xiuxiu the distinct impression of a superior, someone of high status. In fact, the feeling was far stronger than what she'd felt when meeting Fu Yan.
Just as Bai Xiuxiu was reeling from shock, Liu Ergou began to speak. "Listen, Bai Xiuxiu, I don't want to keep playing guessing games with you, so I'll be direct. Your little secrets are completely transparent to me; I see them as clear as day. If I'm not mistaken, you had quite a wild youth, didn't you?"
At his words, the already astonished Bai Xiuxiu became even more shocked.
After all, this was her secret. No one knew about it but her. When she was younger, she was incredibly playful and dared to try anything. But as she grew older, she learned a few things. She later buckled down and worked hard to achieve everything she has today.
Seeing her shocked expression, Liu Ergou laughed heartily. "There's nothing to be shocked about. To me, these are just trivial tricks! Let's get straight to the point. I won't make it too complicated; I'll say it in a way you can understand."
With that, Liu Ergou stood up and slowly walked over to face Bai Xiuxiu. "Your physical condition is rather complicated. If I'm not mistaken, you had a miscarriage after marrying Secretary Duan, and you haven't been able to conceive since.
"Am I wrong?"
Hearing this, Bai Xiuxiu's shock gave way to a flicker of fear.
Who in the world is this Liu Ergou? How does he know everything, even about my miscarriage? This man is definitely not just a doctor...
At that thought, Bai Xiuxiu suddenly had a realization. The last time Liu Ergou had treated the old matriarch, his superb acupuncture skills had been nothing short of miraculous.
As a practitioner of Chinese medicine, it probably isn't impossible for him to see these things.
In an instant, Bai Xiuxiu grew excited.
If Liu Ergou could cure the old matriarch's severe illness, then my own condition must not be a big deal for him. He could probably cure it with a wave of his hand!
But her excitement lasted only a moment before her previous demeanor returned.
It's no exaggeration to say I'm like a pariah now. Everyone goes out of their way to avoid me. Given my current situation, why would Liu Ergou possibly help me? Besides, I offended him so badly before. To think he would help me now... it's just a fool's dream.
The thought made her heart ache. Bai Xiuxiu knew very well that a major reason her relationship with Duan Guanghao had crumbled so easily was their lack of a child. If they had a child of their own, things would certainly be much better than they were now.
The more Bai Xiuxiu thought about it, the more miserable she felt. The only person who could possibly cure her was the very man she had so thoroughly offended.
It seems there really is no hope for me.
Yet even knowing the likely outcome, a sliver of defiance lingered in her heart.
Liu Ergou stood opposite her, carefully observing every subtle change in her expression, missing nothing.
How could he not know what was going through her mind? Still, even though he was the one who brought it up, he couldn't be the one to proactively offer treatment. Doing so would only make him seem cheap. It might even make Bai Xiuxiu think he was trying to curry favor with her. Therefore, Bai Xiuxiu had to be the one to beg him.
With this in mind, Liu Ergou simply watched her, a faint smile playing on his lips as he remained silent. Embarrassed by what had happened before, Bai Xiuxiu didn't dare to speak, and could only stare intently at him.
The two of them locked eyes.
After a long while, Bai Xiuxiu finally broke. She lowered her proud head and, in a pleading tone, apologized.
"I'm sorry, Liu Ergou. It was all my fault before. I'm begging you, please treat me! This child is just too important to me. Without a child, my marriage could be completely ruined!
"Please!"
As she spoke, Bai Xiuxiu bit her lip as if she had made a momentous decision. She stood up and, facing Liu Ergou, began to kneel.
If Liu Ergou hadn't been quick enough to catch her, she would have already been on the ground.
Looking at the pleading, no-longer-arrogant woman before him, a genuine smile finally touched the corners of Liu Ergou's mouth. It wasn't a broad grin, just a slight upturn of his lips. Holding her voluptuous body in his arms, he spoke slowly. "I told you, there's no need for kneeling or apologies. Your illness isn't difficult for me to treat. I can cure it with ease! You're just worried I won't treat you because you offended me, right? Well, let me tell you, your worries are needless. I will treat you!"
With these words, Bai Xiuxiu's eyes instantly lit up. She looked at Liu Ergou, her gaze brimming with hope.
Gazing at the woman in his embrace, Liu Ergou added with a smile, "However, this treatment won't be for free."
Hearing this, Bai Xiuxiu immediately patted her ample chest and began to make assurances. "Oh, is that all? I was wondering what it could be. Even if you hadn't mentioned it, I would have never let you treat me for nothing! Just name your price. I, Bai Xiuxiu, may not have assets worth tens of millions, but coming up with one or two million is no problem for me!"
At this, Liu Ergou raised an eyebrow in surprise. He hadn't expected Bai Xiuxiu to be so wealthy; one or two million was a huge sum of money, yet she spoke of it as if it were nothing. His surprise was brief, however, and he quickly composed himself.
"No, this isn't a problem money can solve. Do you understand?" Er Gou said.
His words left Bai Xiuxiu scratching her head in confusion.
If he doesn't want money, what could he want? Surely, he can't want... me?
As the thought crossed her mind, her peripheral vision caught the way Liu Ergou was staring at her. Looking closer, she saw his gaze was fiery, as if he wanted to devour her whole.
This made her heart lurch.
