Chapter 617: Quick Spar
Frida strode over to Zach and stood on the opposite side of Rienne. She crossed her arms and looked at Yanael and Lahso getting into position.
"What's this? A demonstration of Gjula's strength?" She asked. Unlike the group from Gjula, she and her fellow followers from the Order of Vatar had to walk the length of the tunnel. Most of them were busy resting and didn't have the energy to waste on a fight like Yanael and Lahso were about to.
It looked like they were showing off because they didn't have to walk.
Zach raised an eyebrow and glanced at her.
"You think we need to do something like that?" He shot back. "This is just a spar. Of course, if you're impressed, that's just as well."
Frida didn't answer.
Yanael and Lahso sized each other up as they stood on the stage.
Lahso held his sword with both hands and stood evenly with his feet. His entire body was covered in a suit of plate armor. Not even his face was visible.
Yanael decided to hold her sword in one hand, and she took a slightly more offensive stance with one foot ahead of the other. Her maid dress also covered most of her body, but it didn't offer the same level of protection. But it was lighter, and it hid her legs and feet, which made it difficult for Lahso to read and predict her actions by looking at her footing.
Yanael looked at Lahso and nodded. Lahso returned the nod.
They didn't need to wait for someone to give them the starting signal. When they were both ready, they got started on their own.
Yanael shot forward as soon as Lahso nodded. She wanted to push herself and the limits of her swordsmanship.
And this was a spar between her and Lahso. Zach wasn't involved or a target. That meant she was free to focus fully on offense.
She quickly covered the distance between her original position and Lahso. Lahso didn't move from the spot as Yanael extended her body like a fencer and put her momentum into a long thrust straight forward.
It was a simple move, but Yanael took it to its full potential. There was not a single muscle that didn't contribute or extend fully. And the precision in her thrust was razor-sharp. She could hit the eye of a needle.
However, Lahso raised his hands and intercepted the thrust with the base of his sword and let Yanael's blade grind against his own until it crashed into his cross-guard, after which he jerked his sword to the side and threw off Yanael's sword before it could reach his helmet.
He tried to make use of Yanael, who would have been forced forward since she had put all that power in a sword that didn't stop. He tried to step in and shoulder bash her.
Yanael was as light as the wind as she stepped to the side and brushed past Lahso, catching up to her sword.
Lahso turned around and faced Yanael, who turned around and slashed at his waist.
Lahso was fully armored. It was quality armor made by some of the finest smiths in the Imperial Palace. It had come out mostly unscahted by anything but dirt after the war in the East.
Right now, Lahso's instincts told him that he shouldn't let his armor be the only thing defending against her slash. As a fellow swordsman, he could see that the edge of Yanael's blade was sharper than it looked.
He quickly raised his sword and blocked Yanael's horizontal slash long enough to take a step back and let it go past him. He quickly lowered the tip of his sword and thrust it forward, hoping to take advantage of Yanaeö's miss.
But her sword was just as fast as his, and she deflected his sword similarly to how he had done it, by catching it with the base of her sword and the cross-guard before pushing it to the side. It was just that she had done it one-handed, while he had needed two hands to match her strength.
Lahso quickly pulled back his sword and let go of it with one gauntleted hand to tap aside Yanael's sword as she thrust at him. At the same time, he raised his sword and brought it down in a quick vertical slash.
Yanael had to choose between powering through Lahso's gauntleted hand or defending against his sword. If she pursued the thrust all the way, she could probably stab Lahso in the face. But it wouldn't come cheap.
Yanael flicked her sword and whipped the flat of the blade into the back of Lahso's hand to punish him for being that brave before raising her sword to parry his vertical swing and bring down Lahso's sword to the side instead of on top of her.
Lahso ignored the stinging pain from Yanael's hit and grabbed the hilt of his sword with both hands to pull it back and raise it before Yanael slammed it into the ground and trapped it under her foot.
Yanael was quick to react. As soon as Lahso's sword escaped from her sword's grasp, she took a step forward and angled a light thrust upward at his armpit.
Due to the awkwardness of the position of his sword, he had to dodge. He could either back away or step to the side. He knew that if he took one step backward, Yanael would continue to push him backward until he reached the edge of the ring. She had enough strength and skill to do that.
He could only step to the side and let the thrust slide past his shoulder instead of penetrating his armpit. He hurriedly raised his sword at the same time to block the incoming slash.
As he prepared for a horizontal slash, Yanael quickly raised her sword and brought it down from above. Lahso hurried to catch up and raise his sword higher as he lay it down to defend. He braced himself for impact, but Yanael just tapped his sword lightly before withdrawing her sword and aiming for a quick horizontal slash across his abdomen.
Lahso realized what she was doing.
She was tiring him out.
He gritted his teeth.
It was a dirty method.
