Chapter 12: Chapter 12: A Confusing Crush
Selena sat on her bed, staring at the ceiling as her thoughts spiraled. For weeks now, she had been feeling… different. Every time she saw Sam, her heart raced, and her cheeks flushed. His jokes seemed funnier, his smiles brighter. It was as if a spotlight followed him, highlighting every little thing he did.
But this new sensation was confusing. She couldn't make sense of it. Was it admiration? Respect? Or something more?
Unable to figure it out on her own, she decided to confide in Amelia. If anyone could help her understand, it was her best friend.
The next day during lunch, Selena dragged Amelia to their usual spot under the banyan tree, away from the noise and prying eyes.
"What's wrong?" Amelia asked, her brows knitting in concern as she sat down.
Selena hesitated, fiddling with the edge of her notebook. "I… I've been feeling strange lately. And it's because of Sam."
Amelia's eyes widened, and a mischievous grin spread across her face. "Oh my gosh, do you have a crush on him?"
"A crush?" Selena repeated, tilting her head. "What do you mean?"
Amelia laughed, shaking her head in disbelief. "Selena, you're so oblivious sometimes. A crush is when you like someone—like, like like them. You know, butterflies in your stomach, always wanting to be around them, thinking about them all the time."
Selena blinked, processing Amelia's words. "But… isn't that normal? I mean, he's kind, and he's always there for me. Doesn't everyone feel that way about people they're close to?"
"Not exactly," Amelia said, leaning closer. "It's different. A crush is more intense. And based on the way you've been talking about Sam lately, I'd say that's exactly what you're feeling."
Selena's cheeks turned crimson. "A crush? But… I don't know what to do with that. It's so confusing."
Amelia reached out and squeezed Selena's hand. "It's normal to feel this way. Every teenager experiences it at some point. It's nothing to be scared of. In fact, it can be exciting! It means you're growing, feeling things you've never felt before. Just enjoy it for what it is."
Selena sighed, still unsure. "But what if he doesn't feel the same way? What if I make things awkward between us?"
Amelia smiled warmly. "Selena, Sam clearly cares about you. He's always looking out for you, spending time with you. Whether it's a crush or just friendship, he values you. And that's what matters. Besides, you don't have to do anything about it right now. Just take things one step at a time."
Her friend's words brought a sense of calm to Selena's racing mind. "You're right. I don't have to figure it all out at once."
"Exactly," Amelia said. "And honestly, I think Sam is a great person. He's kind, he respects you, and he's been a good influence in your life. I'm happy you two are getting along so well."
The sincerity in Amelia's voice touched Selena. "Thank you, Amelia. You always know how to make me feel better."
"That's what best friends are for," Amelia said with a wink.
Later that evening, Selena found herself sketching in her notebook, something she hadn't done in a while. Her pencil moved across the page, forming a scene of two people sitting under a tree, their laughter captured in the strokes. It was a reflection of the bond she shared with Sam—a bond that now carried an extra layer of complexity.
The next day at school, Selena felt a little lighter. She still didn't fully understand her feelings, but talking to Amelia had helped. She decided to embrace the uncertainty, to let herself feel without overthinking.
As she walked to her locker, she spotted Sam down the hallway. He was surrounded by a group of students, laughing and joking. Her heart did its now-familiar flip, but instead of panicking, she smiled.
"Hey, Serena!" Sam called out when he noticed her.
She waved, walking toward him. "Hi, Sam."
"Ready for lunch?" he asked, his grin as bright as ever.
She nodded, her heart fluttering but her mind calm. For the first time, she allowed herself to enjoy the moment, to appreciate the connection they shared without overanalyzing it.
And as they walked to their usual spot under the banyan tree, Selena felt a newfound sense of hope. Whatever the future held, she knew she wasn't alone.
