Destroying My Own World

Chapter 385: Selfishness and desire.

Three days had passed, and Melissa, Javelin, Zachary, and Aston had left since they still had a lot of things to do. The past three days were a blast because of Mykel and made both Elestria and Elysande happy. But as Mykel said to Zachary and Aston, nobody knew that he had to leave again on the seventh day.

"Back to the office again. No matter where I go, this place is always the place that makes me feel at home," Elestria said as she sat down at her desk with documents on the table ready to be taken care of. "It would be nice if you could help me with some of these. I might need a hand here," she looked at Mykel staring at the painting of her, Elysande, and Jessie.

Mykel didn't respond to Elestria's request, and it made her wonder why.

"Is everything alright?" Elestria asked.

"Are you planning to take Jessie as your successor? A girl that I found in a dark alley to become the crown princess?" Mykel asked and kept staring at the painting.

Elestria took a deep breath and exhaled deeply because she knew that one day Mykel would notice the situation. She wondered who told him, her guess was Zachary and Aston since those three had a drink together back then.

"Yes, and you should know the reason why," Elestria took the document on top of the stack. "Maybe if I'm not the ruler of this country, I would accept whoever that capable of ruling the kingdom. Sadly, since I'm the ruler, I'm not obligated to find that person, and I have the right to keep a blind eye on that matter," she explained.

"Is that really the case?" Mykel turned around to look at Elestria. "That's just plain idiocy because you neglected your responsibility as the ruler to keep your blood running in this kingdom," he walked to the desk and stood across the table.

"What can I say? I don't have the desire to do so. I'm not saying that I don't want to have an heir, I still haven't found the right person to be with," Elestria stared into Mykel's eye.

"A bird taught a fish to fly and believed it would be able to fly? Do you think just because you raised her, she can become a Queen of this kingdom?" Mykel furrowed his eyebrows.

Elestria scoffed and chuckled in disbelief as she shook her head.

"So you're the same as them. Believe that she's unworthy to replace my position," Elestria responded and immediately focused on the document in her hand because she found the conversation meaningless.

"Because of them, you're the Queen of this kingdom, Your Highness. Do you think this is the best time to be selfish?" Mykel asked as he put his hand on top of the document.

"I devoted my whole life to this kingdom. So what's the matter of wanting to have a moment to be selfish? I'm not neglecting my responsibility, I'm just postponing it until I'm ready for that," Elestria looked a bit annoyed by Mykel's action.

"You had five years and decided to choose Jessie as your successor, a mere girl from a different nation to become the Queen of this kingdom. Your reasoning doesn't add up with your action," Mykel said with a cold expression.

"You don't understand my situation at all. This whole argument is already invalid because you don't even consider my situation. I would like you to leave, Mykel," Elestria said and stared coldly at Mykel.

"I totally understand your situation. The problem isn't me, but you hide the real reason why you're doing this," Mykel responded.

Elestria was being unresponsive and decided to ignore Mykel's words and existence like air in the room. She started to focus on the document and waited until Mykel left the room to show how determined she was about her words.

"If that's the case I don't think I'm needed here in the palace anymore, Your Highness," Mykel slowly took a few steps back as he kept staring at Elestria.

"What's the meaning of this, Mykel? Don't go around the bushes and just say it," Elestria was holding her annoyance. "Are you planning to leave again? Is that what you're trying to say?"

"Isn't that for the best? For both you and Ely?" Mykel asked back as he stood in front of the door with his hands behind his back holding the handle.

Elestria's expression changed drastically when Mykel already knew the reason why she decided not to have an heir or a partner in life. That was also the main reason why she decided to choose Jessie as her successor because she already loved someone that she shouldn't have.

"Tell me, Your Highness. What's the real reason for you to go this far?" Mykel asked and kept staring into Elestria's eyes. "As you said earlier, let's not go around the bushes," he pointed out.

Elestria was cornered by her own words and the whole time Mykel was the one who controlled the flow of the conversation. She almost forgot that Mykel was someone with a cunning nature and an excellent manipulator.

"I'm not trying to say that I like you, but you have been by my side for quite some time. Even though our encounter hasn't been a year since you came to this place, I felt a special connection between the two of us. You were amazing at doing your task, you were flawless," Elestria said as she hid her face and kept staring at the document. "I thought you were a suspicious man who wanted something out of me after you helped me. But, when I found out what kind of a person you are, I felt an attachment to you that made me feel at ease and uncomfortable at the same time," she continued.

"The moment you left, five years ago, my heart ached. I never felt something like that before. I couldn't sleep for weeks, couldn't eat, or even do my job properly. I realized that I have fallen for you, just like how Ely did. What we have is something special, and I don't believe I would be able to find anyone like you out there," Elysande explained. "When you came back three days ago after missing for five whole years, at that moment, it was the happiest moment in my life," she continued and was afraid to look at Mykel.

"I have a promise to keep to Ely. I wouldn't be happy by sacrificing her happiness, and she would do the same thing. Both of our happiness are you, but to take you away from her, I don't want that. I don't want to betray her," Elysande pointed out and finally lifted her head to look at Mykel.

Mykel walked toward Elestria and walked around the desk until he stood beside her. He didn't say a single word as he stared her in the eyes, making her feel uncomfortable.

"Then it is indeed a mistake that I came back. Re-opening a scar that barely healed," Mykel said.

Elestria looked at Mykel and didn't realize a tear fell to her chin, she didn't know those words would be so painful to hear. She knew that what Mykel said wasn't wrong, but at the same time, she didn't want to admit it.

Mykel gently put his left hand on Elestria's right cheek, wiping off the tears. His gentle touch made Elestria couldn't resist holding his hand, wanting to embrace his presence and wanting to be embraced by him as well. Guilt and anger at herself for being so weak made it even harder for her.

"Please stay..." Elestria held Mykel's hand on her cheek so tightly. "I don't want you to leave me alone anymore. It's painful," she added as tears kept coming out of her eyes.

Mykel slowly put his right hand on Elestria's back and helped her stand up. He embraced her and hugged her tightly as he stroked her back to comfort her. He then felt her arms around his back and did the same thing as she buried her face on his chest.

"I understand and am fully aware that you have devoted your whole life to this kingdom. I didn't say that you can't be selfish, and now that it has come to this..." Mykel paused and slowly put his left hand under Elestria's chin and made her look up at him. "Why don't you be selfish at this moment?" He asked.

Elestria stared at Mykel and then moved her gaze at his lips which were only a few inches away from hers. She then slowly moved her hands and put them on the back of Mykel's head as she pushed his head down and lifted her heels to reach his lips.

They kissed so passionately while Mykel wrapped his arms around Elestria's waist and Elestria wrapped her arms around his neck. It felt surreal for Elestria because she never thought she could feel his lips and be embraced by him. The feeling of ease and peace with pleasure only made her addicted to his touch.

"You don't have to say anything, but I love you..." Elestria said in between kisses.
