Chapter 21: Chapter 21 - Arriving on Themyscira
"LexCorp stocks are at an all time low as the investigation continues-" The radio broadcast cut off as Wonder Women turned off the radio.
"We are closing in on Themyscira." Wonder Woman explained as they moved in for a landing. "Keep in mind that you are a guest on what is essentially foreign soil. While they may not be outright hostile they will most certainly not be friendly."
"Understood," Hawkgirl stood up, moving her mace to her belt.
They landed in an open field and saw a few horses riding towards the Javelin they flew in on. As they walked down the platform they saw four amazons on horses.
Wonder Woman bowed and clasped her hands, "Sisters, the Queen sent for me?"
"Yes Diana, come we have to escort you through the gates personally." One of the guards answered before turning her horse and riding away.
Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl looked at each other before flying after the amazon warriors. As they rode they noticed a number of other patrols moving about. As they got closer they saw a gate and a wall spanning a far distance.
"I thought almost no one could get to this island, why have you built internal defenses?" Hawkgirl asked as they quickly passed through the gateway.
"The Queen will explain, but there are checkpoints set up throughout the entire island. Along with watchtowers and a number of both aircraft and seacraft on standby for defense." The amazon briefly explained as they rode towards an area with a number of marble buildings built in the same style.
As they rode through what was once a pristine city with it being unclogged they were surprised by what they saw. There were buildings with damage and scorch marks. A few buildings had collapsed and were clearly never rebuilt. While weapons of all kinds were being displayed throughout the area. Along with the forges that were clearly hard at work making more weapons.
Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl shared another look this time more worried than before. It was clear to them that the Amazonians were preparing for war.
They arrived at the front of what they could only assume was the main building. Walking inside the doors opened quickly for them. They walked into the throne room sitting on the throne quietly giving orders to the Queen of Themyscira, Hippolyta.
"Mother, why do you prepare for war?" Wonder Woman asked as soon as she dismissed her assistant.
"Because something just as bad might be ready to rear its ugly head. I am aware you were not on Earth during the time. But an event that rocked the divine world called the Godfall occurred." Hippolyta explained as she stood up from her throne and walked down to them.
"Godfall?" Diana looked perplexed for a moment, "why have I not heard about this?"
"Because its existence was all but erased from records in the hope that it would not occur. It was the god's version of an apocalypse. Olympus would fall to the Earth. Hell would close its doors and kick out its occupants over time, the less dangerous ones going first and the more dangerous ones going later. The gods would fall and become demigods." Her explanation was brief and left several holes for questions.
"Just the Greek gods? Where are the gods now?" Diana quickly asked, realizing the gravity of the situation.
"No, all of the gods on Earth. They are scattered throughout the world, we felt when it occurred and saw the streaks of meteors scattering around the world. I can only assume they went everywhere, separating now that they were all mortal, vulnerable, and weakened. They all have grudges against each other and can easily kill each other to make their revenge permanent." Hippolyta explained.
"So now we have to worry about a bunch of gods on par with Diana killing each other?" Hawkgirl asked in an unimpressed tone.
"No, weaker. Unlike natural demigods, the gods were completely weakened. Especially since a main component of their power were souls of a Phoenix. As it was, the gods were never meant to be combatants, their descendants the demigods were. They stole their power from the once extinct Phoenix species." Hippolyta began moving to another room.
"I… Why have I never heard anything about this?" Diana followed her mother at a hurried pace. With a sudden sense of worry building inside her.
"Because history is written by the victors and how likable do you think the gods would be if you knew that they massacred numerous races in search of strength. The atrocities that they committed were banned from being recorded." Hippolyta walked into a room with a shelf of books and pulled off a faded red leather book.
"If it is so prohibited then how do you know about this in the first place?" Hawkgirl asked as felt this disgusting feeling when she was looking at the book. Like it was out of place. "What is that made of?"
"The remains of a phoenix. It was the only thing that could hide from a worldwide decree of divine origin. It was made by Prometheus." Hippolyta opened the book and the pages could be seen with fiery red writing.
"Prometheus? As in the Titan who stole fire?" Diana asked, she had only heard the legend. But there was nothing else to it.
"Yes, he was an extraordinary thief and an even better person. So much so that the other gods would not let him bismerich his name as much as he wanted to. He stole many things from the ability to make fire to making records of the world's real history. He entrusted pieces of it to people around the globe. The Amazons of Themyscira have the largest of all those collections, but not all of it." Hippolyta explained.
"Is there anything that you are missing that we might need?" Hawkgirl asked, already knowing the answer with their luck.
"Yes, we only have mention of Godfall. Actual records of its words and everything surrounding it was given to another group. We only have a general record that lists it and what comes of it." Hippolyta explained.
"A general record, like an overall history textbook?" Diana asked with a frown. She had spent many years in man's world as a historian and working in museums. She had sent some history texts back with varying views. Which were limited in being viewed as far as she knew.
"Yes, so it lacks details and specifics. Diana this is the book regarding Phoenixes that Prometheus wrote. It has all the details from the species' tendencies to its weaknesses. You can study it while you are here but cannot take it from this room." Hippolyta went to the bookshelf and began looking for another book.
"Why? It would be easier to translate this if we could take it with us." Hawkgirl asked as she looked at the ancient writing in confusion.
"Translation is unnecessary." Diana declared as she stared at the words and the meaning became clear. "I can read it but it is difficult… and painful."
"Painful?" Hawkgirl's tone suggested worry.
"That makes sense. The divinity in your bloodline means that prometheus' writings are denying you. But your human bloodline is accepting of it." Hippolyta explained as she pulled a brown furred book from the shelf, it appeared that the leather it was bound in still had the fur of the beast. "Your friend probably can not read it because she is not human."
"That… is it possible?" Hawkgirl asked in surprise. She had not seen much magic but as tempted as she was to hit the book with her weapon she had a feeling it would just destroy the book in its entirety.
Hippolyta shook her head and she opened the other book as well, looking for a specific page. "Prometheus was the last one able to do such a thing. I know of no other person to do anything similar."
"Huh…" Hawkgirl started to think she was useless here.
"Phoenixes are near immortal beings that slowly age after reaching maturity. There is no record of one dying of age. It is possible to obtain said ability by consuming the phoenix's soul… mother did the gods-?" Diana began reading aloud.
"Yes, they killed and consumed them for their powers."
"They are almost immortal, only able to be killed in their sleep. Or when they are in a resting state. They thrive in war and fighting, they were once a space faring species that ventured out and fought. But were bound to Earth by the gods so they could steal their powers. There are no other known weaknesses, killing one is impossible since their souls cannot die. It is theoretically possible to revive the species after the infamous Godfall. But only through the ones that are descended." Diana leaned back as she rubbed her temples.
"This is going to take a while isn't it?" Hawkgirl asked.
Diana sighed, "go to the ship and get some notepads and inform the League that we will be here for several days."
