Chapter 315: C275
The preliminary list of personnel was basically set.
Tony himself, Captain America, Sandman, Doctor Octopus, and War Machine.
Although Tony had only managed to recruit these five for the current Illuminati, they were all people he could trust to some extent.
Of course, their overall strength was nowhere near that of the long-established and deeply rooted Justice League.
However, once the team was fully formed, it would be a power that Tony could truly call his own.
With this decision made, Tony let out a sigh of relief.
For the first time in a long while, the restlessness and fear in his heart eased—at least for now.
"The Illuminati... For the time being, it shouldn't be known to outsiders."
After considering the matter for a while, Tony decided to form the team in secret to avoid unnecessary scrutiny and interference.
Just like the Justice League.
He was well aware that despite the Justice League's prominence, their actions in many events remained passive, often lacking the ability to take initiative.
The fundamental issue lay in the constraints imposed by the military and other official forces.
Tony didn't want to fall into the same trap.
That was why he intended to keep the Illuminati hidden, and he had no plans to make its existence public anytime soon.
The purpose of this organization was simple: to provide a sense of security, to ensure he had trustworthy allies in times of crisis, and to possess the ability to turn things around when needed.
Normally, the members of the Illuminati could go about their own lives. But in critical moments, they would gather and take action.
In a way, fate had a strange way of repeating itself.
Even in this world, Tony had chosen a similar path.
In the comics, the Illuminati was composed of the smartest and wealthiest superheroes on the planet, created to handle crises that threatened Earth and the universe.
It operated on the philosophy of making small sacrifices to prevent greater losses. It was, in essence, one of the most influential superhero groups in the Marvel Universe.
Notably, just as Tony was thinking now, the members of the Illuminati in the comics kept their identities strictly confidential—even from their families and fellow superheroes.
Whether in the comics or in this world, Tony remained a core member of the Illuminati.
In fact, in the Marvel Universe, many superheroes had been part of the Illuminati, including Mr. Fantastic, Doctor Strange, Professor X, Black Bolt, Namor, Black Panther, Captain America, Hulk, and Ant-Man.
(For the record, Black Bolt was the King of the Inhumans, and Namor was Marvel's version of Aquaman—the King of Atlantis.)
However, the defining trait of the Illuminati was their tendency to "do bad things with good intentions."
No matter how noble their purpose, their actions often led to disastrous consequences.
While contemplating his plan, Tony recalled Batman's approach when forming the Justice League, which gave him another idea.
"The current roster is still far from enough."
Tony pondered.
"We need more trustworthy members... Maybe we should train some talents with potential ourselves."
He summoned Jarvis.
"Show me the street-level heroes who have been performing well recently."
"The list is as follows," Jarvis responded. "Kick-Ass, The Punisher..."
After a brief pause, Jarvis continued, "Sir, perhaps you'd be interested in another list—Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones..."
Tony carefully reviewed the information Jarvis had compiled, his expression unreadable.
"Good work, Jarvis."
Just as he finished speaking, something occurred to him. His gaze shifted to the holographic interface before him.
"Jarvis... Maybe I should build you a body and make you my real assistant..."
Washington, D.C.
Anton signed the appointment letter, officially becoming the head of the UFO Special Police Unit—better known as the Men in Black.
He hadn't even hesitated.
"Don't let the pie hit your head for nothing."
Becoming the boss of the Men in Black meant that Anton had officially become part of a powerful organization.
From now on, he wouldn't just be an observer—he would have authority in many areas, and within the boundaries of the rules, he could essentially do as he pleased.
"This is your uniform."
As Anton adjusted his black suit, John Keller clapped his hands in approval. "You look good—like a real director."
"Thank you," Anton nodded. "I appreciate the arrangement."
"Right, there's one more thing."
John Keller continued, "Although this department operates under the direct jurisdiction of the World Security Council, we've assigned you a deputy—Agent Z."
"Z, come out and introduce yourself."
At Keller's cue, a tall, stone-faced man in his forties stepped forward.
"This is Agent Z, the best operative in our intelligence division."
"Z?" Anton raised an eyebrow. "That's his name?"
Keller nodded. "Yes. 'Z' is both his code name and his official designation. Only when he retires will he be allowed to use his real name again."
"So I only get one deputy?"
Anton smiled. "What about K and J? Can they help me out? This is my first time running such a big department—I could use the extra hands."
"Don't push your luck." Keller rolled his eyes. "We've already given you our best agent. Expect nothing more."
He crossed his arms. "If you're looking for K and J, go find them yourself. There are 26 letters in the alphabet. You can recruit O, M, T, C, or H if you want. You're the boss now—it's up to you."
Anton's smile deepened. "Noted. O, M, T, C, and H—I'll keep those in mind. Once I find K and J, I'll use those letters for the next recruits. Plenty of room to work with."
John Keller moved on. "Anyway, about your first mission. The World Security Council has assigned you to participate in negotiations with Asgard. After all, Asgardians are technically extraterrestrials."
He added, "You also have a good relationship with Batman, and he seems to know quite a bit about Asgard. He might be useful for these talks. And let's not forget you have a certain Amazon on your side—Diana Prince. She's the daughter of Zeus, isn't she?"
Anton shrugged. "Doesn't really matter. Even if she is Zeus's daughter, we're dealing with Odin, the King of the Norse gods. Different ballpark."
He leaned back. "That said, I'm fine with participating in the negotiations. But as far as I know, Asgardians rely heavily on magic. To them, magic is just another form of technology, but you shouldn't expect too many advantages out of this meeting."
Keller nodded. "The key point is that this marks humanity's first formal diplomatic exchange with an advanced alien civilization. And they don't just see themselves as aliens—they call themselves gods. On top of that, they look exactly like humans."
He clapped Anton on the shoulder. "Anyway, that's enough for today. Get to know Agent Z—you two will be working together for a long time."
