Chapter 52: Divine Guidance
"Arghhhh!" Zack screamed, gazing at the Moon in the sky.
"How could I?" He bellowed, kneeling on the ground.
Bam, Bam, Bam!
He punched the ground until his fists bled. His screams and wails echoed in the silent forest. Moon's soft light didn't provide any warmth to a vampire.
He bawled in helplessness.
'I was going to drink my own sister's blood. How could I forget my family?' thought cut through his brain and kept swirling like a sharp sword. Every cut, every echo brought a deeper pain than any physical injury.
The Moon remained indifferent to the crying Vampire. Zack stopped, through his blurry vision, he stared at the incomplete Moon in the sky. And he froze.
A few moments later, he muttered, "I forgot that the monster I have become is a shackle, not a freedom. I forgot about who I really was before."
His crimson eyes turned glossy, more tears flowed out, and he continued in a hoarse whisper, "I lost myself in the blood lust. I deluded myself that blood is the only freedom. But now I know. I know if I indulge more than I should, it'll become my curse and I'll end up forgetting that I used to be a human."
He exhaled, a foggy breath coming out of his mouth, and he stood up. He looked around and wiped his tears. He walked forward, his steps firm and confident. He glanced at the sky and whispered, "I was a human and now I'm a Vampire. My master is Victor Hans. I'll serve him with all my heart until he doesn't order me against my family. That is my bottom line. That is my connection to my forgotten humanity."
Whoosh!
A gust of wind passed by him. The Moon's light brightened, focusing on him, like it was acknowledging his oath. A melancholic smile appeared on Zack's face. He strode forward; his direction was the cave where he had rested earlier.
"I have to ask my Master for forgiveness. I have indulged too much in blood lust." He muttered to himself and bolted to the mountain.
Back in the castle, as cadets slept peacefully in the blue faction dorm, inside one of the rooms, she opened her eyes. Kate got out of her bed, her eyes dimly glowed in the dark, her sharp fanged mouth open with audible gasping sounds. She spun, her eyes zooming in on Zara sleeping peacefully on her bed.
Her heart raced, her vision turned crimson, and her throat went dry. Like a war drum, the carotid pulse echoed in her ears. She gulped and stepped closer to Zara. Her pupils dilated, and her fangs glimmered. She could feel the warmth coming out of Zara's flesh. And the flow of warm blood underneath her tender skin.
Bam!
Whoosh!
A sudden gust of wind opened the windows, and she jumped back like a startled cat. She felt cold air against her skin, the sweet aroma of pine trees, and Moon's light awakened her senses. Her eyes widened as she realized what she was trying to do. Before any further thoughts, she jumped out of the window.
From the twenty-meter height, she landed nimbly on the ground and rolled over. She glanced back at the window for a few moments, and then she bolted into the forest.
'I lost my mind. Did I really try to drink Zara's blood? I never realized that the freedom I got has shackles that I would never be able to break.' She clenched her fists.
Squelch!
Nails pierced her skin and drew blood. The aroma of iron wafted against her nose, and she brought her hand closer to her face. She licked the blood, and a moan escaped from her lips. She stopped and glanced back at the tall spires. 'I have to satiate my bloodlust without killing anyone.'
Suddenly, her eyes rolled back and she found herself standing in an old wooden room.
Full Moon's light fell on the center of the room from the window and lit up like a stage. In the center, an old woman sat on a rocking chair. A small girl, five years old, stood beside her.
The old woman's wrinkled face stretched into a smile, her hazel eyes glimmered in happiness as she glanced at the little girl.
Little girl's eyes turned glossy, and tears rolled down her cheeks. "Grandma, I don't want to drink your blood." Her trembling voice escaped her lips.
Old woman warmly held her face in her wrinkled hands and replied in her old voice, "My dear, you need to drink so you don't lose control. Don't worry about this old woman, your one sip won't kill me."
Little girl bobbed her head, her mouth opened, and fangs glinted in the moonlight.
"Remember, don't pass on the Moon's energy to me. I don't wish to live longer." The old woman reminded the little girl.
The girl nodded, and her fangs pierced the old woman's hand. Her hazel eyes turned crimson, and she gulped. After just two sips, she removed her fangs. Her eyes turned normal, and she took out her tongue. She licked the old woman's hand, and the punctured wounds closed.
The old woman smiled and whispered with exhaustion, "Thank you, deer, I'm sleeping now."
The little girl turned and looked into Kate's eyes. After a long stare, she gave her a light nod.
"Hahhhh," Kate gasped as she fell on the ground. She lay on her back, chest burned for oxygen, and she felt like she had just come out of the water.
Her eyes gazed up, sky covered from the sides by the dark leaves of the forest. And Moon glowed with its pale light, she felt a Divine presence in it. 'Was it Moon Goddess herself guiding me on the right path?' A question like a bud rose in her mind and transformed into a firm tree.
'So, Goddess! She interrupted her thoughts in the middle and stood up. She turned toward the Academy castle and sped up.
Hidden under the shadows, in her blue pajamas, Kate reached the quarter of cleaners. She entered one of the maids' rooms.
