Chapter 37: The Real Snowflake
Everybody froze in place as soon as Snowflake pressed down the red button on the detonator he had in his hand. An eerie silence enveloped the room as everyone held their breath, preparing for what was about to come.
Kante used that scary moment to move, to eliminate his target, the old surgeon and the Kim couple. He couldn't let them live to tell the tale he had revealed.
Just as he moved towards them with his sword raised, Uche bumped into him from the side, and Sergeant Kim, coming back to his senses, immediately shouted.
"It's a distraction, not an explosive."
Sergeant Kim shouted as he shot down at the equipment Kante and Uche had bumped into, but then, the room was suddenly enveloped in a strange thick fog, and several officers collapsed a fraction of a second later.
Sergeant Kim sluggishly moved towards the door and gave a command.
"Everyone retreat, it's a toxic smoke bomb."
He shouted, his vision blurry.
Uche, realizing what it was and knowing the effect, immediately stopped his breath and shut his eyes, before moving towards the window blindly, which was already broken, so he guessed Snowflake had escaped through it after the distraction.
He bumped into the muddy ground of the outskirt before opening his eyes, he saw several armed cops standing at the entrance of the building, their guns raised, ready to be fired at any second, Inspector Ray stood calmly in front of them.
'That bastard.'
He still remembered how rude and composure-less the young Inspector was. Making sure that none of them saw him, he was about to turn around and make a run before someone suddenly appeared in front of him, blocking his way.
For a moment, Uche forgot to breathe, then he slowly moved his gaze upward and his eyes widened when he saw a pair of beautiful eyes staring down at him.
"Huh Mira?"
Uche asked, moving his gaze away from her with a shrug.
"Let's go, Snowflake escaped."
Mira said, turning around without saying another word.
---
Several minutes later, they both got home and Uche explained everything that happened to Mira, not leaving out a scene, he explained everything in detail. How he had been kidnapped at the alleyway he was supposed to pass through, how Kante had planned to get his organs and use them for himself.
He also told her about the sad story of Kante's cursed bloodline, how they were cursed to die young in their family and how Kante's grandfather had rebelled, before leading to the rise of Snowflake. He didn't leave out the fact that he couldn't heal after being injured by Snowflake's weapon, although his body had completely healed now, he decided not to leave it out.
And surprisingly, Mira already knew about everything, she knew everything that happened in the lab in detail.
"Huh how?"
Uche asked, surprised.
"Did you forget that I told you the watch you have serves as a tracker and can as well transmit your communication to me."
Mira said with a smile.
"Oh."
Uche said with a shrug, then he looked at her with his eyes wide open.
"Then...why...why did you make me explain everything again."
Uche asked, his eyes opened in disbelief.
Mira replied with a smile, and moved on to another topic.
"Now that the cops know about him, we have little time left or else, we won't be able to get your eye back."
"My point is he would leave the city as soon as possible, so I think we should act right now. I've made my research and located his house, although I don't know if he would return there tonight, but we can't take any chances."
Mira explained.
---
Many of the unfortunate cops were caught in the toxic smoke Snowflake had released and they all collapsed in an instant, but the lucky few managed to get out in time, but not without inhaling part of it that weakened them immediately.
Sergeant Kim rolled out of the building, stumbling on the muddy surface of the entrance, his chest rising slowly and a few others also rolled out the same way he did.
"Get ready to fire."
Inspector Ray shouted, panic etched into his voice, seeing his comrades' bodies roll out miserably and for a moment, he thought Sergeant Kim was dead.
'No, the old bastard could not die so easily.'
He reassured himself, and after waiting for a couple of minutes with nothing and nobody coming out of the building, he threw a glance at the bodies lying at the entrance of the building, then he could see their chests rising slowly.
"Get them back, they're still alive."
He commanded and several cops quickly moved forward to get their bodies back while a few of them remained, their weapons still raised in tension.
Their bodies were examined and no visible injuries were found, so Inspector Ray wondered what had scared them like that. A couple of minutes later, Sergeant Kim was the first to get back his sense fully, he got up on his two feet and looked at Inspector Ray who had been staring at him intently.
"Huh old man, I thought you were dead."
Inspector Ray teased with a smile.
"This is not the right time to joke, the situation is more dire than we thought."
Sergeant Kim said, moving away from him as he turned to the officer beside him.
"Get in touch with the headquarters, tell them to block all exits out of the city, with immediate effect."
He retrieved his gun from one of the younger cops who still had their focus fixed on the building, waiting for someone to come out.
"You guys should get in, there's no more threat inside, I can assure that."
He commanded, but Inspector Ray raised his hand, signaling for them to stop.
"What happened in there, where are the others, I'm sure you wouldn't have rolled out on your butt if there was no threat inside."
Inspector Ray said.
Sergeant Kim looked at him for a moment, then moved towards the building and said.
"They are inside, let's get them out first before I explain the situation."
Everyone followed him cautiously, including Inspector Ray as they looked around the building. A few of them went to explore other parts of the building while others followed Sergeant Kim directly to the lab. They were all surprised at what they met inside, more than half of the team that had followed Sergeant Kim in were all lying motionless in the lab, they were still alive but just unconscious. A few others already had their heads cleanly chopped off, making Inspector Ray wonder who Sergeant Kim had encountered in this lab.
Inspecting the room closely, trying to look for any threat, he couldn't trust the old man so he kept moving around the lab with his gun raised, then his gaze settled on the three figures also lying lifelessly at the corner of the lab. Their bodies gaunt and they looked nothing but malnourished.
"Isn't this the surgeon we were supposed to arrest."
He called Sergeant Kim's attention after seeing the old surgeon lying among the couple.
Sergeant Kim was also surprised to find the old man as a captive when they got into the lab, after all, they had come here because of him. He walked towards the three of them and checked their pulse, confirming that they were still breathing, he got up, sighed and went on to explain what the situation was when they got here.
The young Inspector was silent for a couple of seconds then said.
"So you're saying you met Kante and Uche fighting each other when you got here, and Kante is likely to be the real Snowflake."
He moved his gaze towards Sergeant Kim's, making sure to make eye contact.
"Are you telling me Uche was just used a scapegoat and he's innocent, then what about the ambush?"
Inspector Ray asked, not moving his gaze away.
Sergeant Kim look at him and said.
"At first I thought Uche was the only one in the room with the three captives, although we heard the sound of fighting before bursting in, but he was the only one we found as a threat, until the surgeon raised a trembling hand, pointing under the table and said the room was rigged with explosives and Snowflake had the detonator."
"We followed the direction of his hand and found Kante hiding under the table, the first five officers to see him are the ones with their heads chopped, just as we started firing at him, the room was suddenly covered in a toxic smoke and this happened, while Uche and Kante also used the chance to escape."
Inspector Ray was about to say something, but the old sergeant interrupted him.
"And before you ask if they're working together, remember I said they were fighting each other before we got in, and also, Kante attempted to kill the three captives after the smoke was released but Uche interrupted him. So I suggest we give them special treatment to recover quickly and question them immediately, we can't linger on this matter anymore."
