Cave Refuge

Chapter 617: Code

Upon seeing the supplies inside the coffins, everyone's faces displayed extremely surprised expressions. If they hadn't found it odd when a creature resembling a water snake crawled out of the first coffin they opened, they were now utterly perplexed by the supplies they found inside these coffins.

Although everyone could see that the supplies in the coffins were perfectly packaged and were indeed survival supplies that they could still use, none of those present had any thoughts about using these supplies.

First of all, since the supplies were stored in coffins, the vast majority of people, unless driven to extremities, would rarely touch such taboo objects.

Besides feeling a little superstitious, another reason was that these things were quite far from the ship they were on. Since they didn't know what else might be inside the coffins, when they had used firearms earlier, they had deliberately aimed at a distant target.

As the drone returned to the ship, the members of the Guard Squad, though none spoke up, unanimously turned their questioning gazes toward the Guard Squad Captain.

Noticing his subordinates' glances, the Guard Squad Captain also fell into deep thought. Although they had only opened two coffins so far, from the different scenarios in each coffin, the Guard Squad Captain thought these coffins were each like a mystery box that could contain good or bad things.

Actually, if possible, the Guard Squad Captain did not want to deal with these coffins. After all, a natural disaster had just occurred the previous night, and it was safer to remain cautious, since reality differed from games and everyone only had one life.

His acceptance of Jason Jefferson's invitation to board the ship, not returning to the military with his team, was primarily for a stable living environment. When Jason had invited him, he had agreed to let him bring his family aboard.

This also meant that his own family was on this ship. If there were no outsiders on the ship, just himself, he would certainly be willing to take a gamble, but now that his entire family was aboard, he preferred a stable life over reckless adventures.

However, seeing the expectant looks in his team's eyes, the Guard Squad Captain could not outright refuse. So, reluctantly, he kicked this decision back to Jason, the captain, whom he knew fairly well.

Jason was a person who tended to be cautious, but he was always steady in his actions. Hence, if he deferred the decision to Jason, it was highly likely that Jason would choose not to continue testing.

Yet, to the Guard Squad Captain's surprise, before he could even relay it, Jason had already agreed outright.

Seeing the puzzled looks from his right-hand men, Jason carefully explained to his subordinates, "Although our ship's supplies are still plentiful, look at the surface of the water now, scattered with these coffins.

Given the current situation, even if we wanted to leave, there's no way we can. So even if we follow your idea and drag this out, when the ship's supplies are almost depleted, we would still have to try in the end.

So, as it stands, it's better to probe now while we have strong and vigorous men; if something happens, we can adjust promptly. Otherwise, if we wait until we are really exhausted and then have to probe out of necessity, we could likely face very severe casualties."

Hearing Jason's analysis, the Guard Squad Captain reflected for a moment, glanced at the surrounding waterscape, and then quickly made a decision, "Little Five, Liu Zi, two of you, tie on safety ropes and go down.

Once you two go down, use a wooden stick to probe first, have two people ready to pull you up, and everyone else should aim their guns, ready to shoot at any danger that might appear from the coffins, to ensure the safety of Little Five and Liu Zi."

After listening to the captain's orders, Little Five and Liu Zi had their safety ropes already secured, and then they quickly descended along the ropes.

When they had descended to the right height, they waved to signal to the other team members on the deck that they had reached the appropriate position and were ready to start the first probe.

The Guard Squad Captain first had the two members handling the ropes check that the ropes could be freely and flexibly pulled. After careful final adjustments, he signaled for the two below to start the initial trial.

Although the two had reached this position, it did not mean they had to open two coffins at once. They were not foolhardy brutes. They understood that their captain had sent two of them down as an added precaution.

One would probe, while the other held a weapon, ready to strike first if another creature was inside the coffin.

If it weren't for this particular area on the water's surface, the Guard Squad Captain might not have arranged for only a two-man team but at least a squad of ten.

Little Five and Liu Zi exchanged glances, then, cautiously, Little Five touched the coffin below him with a wooden stick.
